Los Angeles County Arboretum

$9 Arboretum admission fee

Join APA Los Angeles for a special private guided walking tour of the Los Angeles Arboretum led by botanical consultant Frank McDonough.

Spread out over 127 acres, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens contains over 12,000 types of gorgeous plants. The garden has been used as a backdrop for films and television shows since the 1930s. Spring is an ideal time to visit: The weather is pleasant and there are many flowering plants.

Highlights of the 90-minute tour will include learning about California native plants that are ideal for planting during the multi-year drought. The visit concludes at Crescent Farm, a lawn turned landscape devoted to water conservation and sustainable food production. Afterwards, feel free to explore the gardens until the grounds close at 4:30 PM. Bring your walking shoes and a hat!

Free parking is available adjacent to the entrance of the garden. Via transit, take the Metro Gold Line to Sierra Madre Villa station and transfer to Foothill Transit buses or Metro buses that will take you within a short walking distance to the Arboretum.

Summer in the City is a series introducing APA LA's members to the latest innovative, proactive planning in cities around the Los Angeles region. Between June and August, we'll visit several cities whose staff will lead tours, site visits, and presentations that showcase their planning and community development efforts.

On June 21, the first of our 2015 series will take us to the City of Hawthorne. We'll start off with coffee and breakfast at Hawthorne City Hall for a presentation and discussion revolving around the City's most pertinent planning efforts: Downtown Hawthorne Specific Plan; Crenshaw Station Active Transportation Plan; and the Hawthorne EcoVillage Master Plan. We will then dive into the history of Hawthorne with a tour of the nearby Hawthorne Historical Museum. Afterwards, we'll tour the development efforts taking place at the Hawthorne Mall.

Parking is available at City of Hawthorne City Hall. Bus stops for Metro Bus 40 and 740 along Hawthorne Boulevard.

Application Window for AICP Exam Open Through June 30

APA is now accepting applications for the November 2015 AICP Comprehensive Planning Examination. If you haven't already considered applying to take the exam, consider this: certification can enhance a planner's professional credibility, open career opportunities, and boost earning potential.

Furthermore, the eligibility requirements for the exam may be lower than you imagined. If you earned a graduate degree in Planning from a program accredited by the PAB, you only need two years of professional planning experience to meet the minimum requirements. If you earned a bachelors degree in Planning from a program accredited by the PAB, you only need three years of experience.

Act fast! The early bird application window closes on June 8. The final application deadline is June 30. More information is available at planning.org.

APA recognizes that application fee may be an obstacle to some members who wish to apply to take the exam. On behalf of National, the California Chapter administers a scholarship program that evaluates members' financial assistance needs through a confidential process. Complete information and application due dates are available at apacalifornia.org.

If you have questions, please contact AICP exam staff or APA LA's Vice Director for Professional Development.
