Awards Gala June 25 at the Alex Theatre
Save the Date!

APA Los Angeles is excited to announce that this year's Planning Awards Gala will be held at Glendale's historic Alex Theatre on June 25.

The Alex Theatre has been the centerpiece of the Glendale's arts, culture and community programming for more than 80 years. In its early years, the Alex served as a preview house for major Hollywood  studio films, drawing the most glamorous stars of its day, including Elizabeth Taylor, and  Charlie Chaplin. In 1992, the City of Glendale purchased and restored the theatre as part of Brand Boulevard revitalization. We are looking forward to honoring Los Angeles County's best plans and planning achievements in this historic and vibrant space.

After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks and tower dwelling an improvement on the car-dependence of sprawl?

In his award-winning 2013 book "Happy City," journalist Charles Montgomery finds answers to such questions at the intersection between urban design and the emerging science of happiness, during a journey through some of the world's most dynamic cities.

Join APA Los Angeles for an engaging discussion about this important and well-researched book, moderated by City Fabrick's Brian Ulaszewski. Hosted by City Fabrick and Walk Long Beach in the East Village neighborhood of Downtown Long Beach, the themes and insights from the book will be discussed and considered for practical implementation in your community. Beverages and light refreshments will be served.

AICP members can earn one hour of general Certification Maintenance (CM) credit (pending approval).
