Oasis for Orphans - December 2014

Sponsored child from The Valley reading a letter from her sponsor

Life transformation for the children whom we serve is our number one priority! Not only do we seek to transform a child by meeting the basic necessities of life, such as food, clean water, shelter, and education, but we also want to see God truly transform children's hearts in the process. Something simply magical also happens when we seek to transform children... Our own hearts are transformed as well! God can take an apathetic, hardened or bitter heart and teach it to be generous, compassionate, and loving.

This Christmas season, we are so grateful for the life transformation we have seen in our children and sponsors this past year. We have added 30 new sponsored children at The Valley and some of the stories of both children and sponsors are nothing less than amazing! And, the best part is that God is not even close to being finished yet!

As you wind down 2014, will you consider how YOU can help Oasis as we seek to transform children's hearts in Kenya? This December issue is all about life transformation and opportunities for you to play a part- pray, support the work of Oasis with a financial donation, join our sponsor family and become a Child, Angel or Education sponsor, or join us on an adventure of a lifetime by traveling with us to meet our children in person. However God moves your heart, we pray that you will be blessed beyond measure this Christmas season and that your blessings will overflow to the amazing children we serve.

God bless you, and have a very Merry Christmas,

Diane

Child Sponsors - Helping Children Dream
Adapted from a speech given by Lynn Clay at the 500 Dreams, 500 Kids event

This is Barnabus. He just turned 11. He is my sponsored son in Africa. For five years, I have had a dream to visit him in Kenya. We write a check every month to support him. We write letters, talk on the phone, Skype and send gifts and pictures. We pray for him and his older sister, Naomi, and look at his picture nearly every day. On Aug 7th 2014, my dream came true when my youngest daughter, Jasmine, and I joined a team of sponsors, and we took the long trip to Africa to meet Barnabus.

What are your dreams?...Dreams for your kids, dreams of vacations, dreams of accomplishing something significant? What if you didn't have access to food on a regular basis? What if water wasn't readily available, or it made you sick? What if you lived in an unsafe place? What if your whole world revolved around surviving in the moment? What would you dream about then?
Barnabus lives at the Oasis children's home called The Hill. He lives there with 96 other kids and a wonderful staff of mamas, teachers and caretakers. The atmosphere on The Hill can only be described as being what the Bible calls an "Acts-like" environment. I felt like we were in a Bible story, and the church was unfolding in front of my eyes. The older kids helped the younger kids looked out for them, explained things to them, played with them and treated them like beloved younger siblings. There was inexhaustible patience, no arguments and no complaints. There was an absence of competition and possessiveness between the kids...They share everything. We were warned not to be offended if we saw a shirt that we had given to our sponsored child on another child. It truly was a place of joy and love, filled with the Holy Spirit. Rick Smith, our onsite missionary, told me that it's like this all the time, not just when there are visitors!

In the middle of our trip, we went to a newer children's home to hold a Vacation Bible School like we had done on The Hill the day before. While the children at this home were beautiful and joyful, they seemed to be still living with a poverty mentality. Our experience there was more chaotic; the kids didn't know how to take turns, help the others around them or to be satisfied with what was offered them. Although they were now protected, fed and cared for, there was still a sense of desperation and fear.

What made the difference between these two places? Talking about it later, a staff member from The Hill said, "That is what it was like at The Hill in the beginning." It was at that moment that I knew why God had me on this trip! He wanted to show me, up close and very personal, how love, faith and hope transforms and sets free the spirit and soul of a child. When you are living in the tyranny of the moment and fully in survival mode, you don't have the luxury to ponder hopes and dreams. You don't think about your God-given gifts and how He's wired you. You don't get to think of others before yourself. You are figuring out how to make it to through to tomorrow.

But...when you are living in a safe place, you have plenty of food and adequate shelter, you are loved and encouraged every day, go to school to exercise your brain and you are offered the wisdom, love, forgiveness and grace of God...Then you get to dream! You get to look outside the very narrow box of just surviving. You get to thrive!

This is the joy that I get to experience by being a sponsor... partnering with God to bring love, faith and hope to children on the other side of the world. We get to join God in taking care of the physical needs of food, water, clothing and shelter. We get to be part of God's plan to feed and nurture sharp minds with school and play. We get to partner with God to teach and grow children's spirits as they are drawn closer to their heavenly Father. And then...we get to watch them dream...big dreams... like becoming an architect to build strong houses with wood floors instead of just dirt. Or, we get to fuel the desire to become a neurosurgeon...not just a doctor- a neurosurgeon! Now that is big dream! Together, let's dream big for our Oasis children. I invite you to join with Oasis as we continue to develop and make room for God to transform even more minds and hearts of children in Kenya.

Spending Ourselves
By Agnieszka Moroni

Spending. What comes to mind when we think of spending? This time of year, we spend money for Christmas gifts for friends and family. We also spend vacation days getting away from the stresses of everyday life. But, how often do we consider how we spend our hearts?

The Book of Isaiah has an interesting perspective on spending:
"Spend yourself on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed..." Isaiah 58:10

What does it mean to spend ourselves? I see it as giving of myself no matter how painful it may be, wholeheartedly following God's leading despite my objections.

I never participated in sports growing up, and even when I started working out regularly, I found that I despise running. I always heard running was tough on joints and could create long-term damage to the body. Working in a physical therapy clinic confirmed my greatest objections.

But, something changed in me when I heard a friend (who had not previously been a runner) talk about how God began working in her heart, and that her compassion for rescuing and developing orphaned children compelled her to run for TEAM Oasis. I realized how far a little sacrifice can go when God blesses our efforts. Yes, I still believe running can be painful, but what's a little joint discomfort compared to spending childhood without parents? Complaining about early mornings and strenuous training is nothing compared to a child's sleepless night wondering if she will have a meal tomorrow. My little sacrifice helps orphaned children find hope in Jesus and be folded into a family both now and for all eternity! Who am I to say that my little sacrifice is too difficult or inconvenient?

Every day presents us with opportunities to spend ourselves - to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and follow His leading into our own personal mission field. Some people believe that, unless God is calling them to a drastic change like moving to Africa, their impact is insignificant. Not true. Maybe God is calling you to spend yourself at work. Maybe God is nudging you to spend yourself by making the first move to restore a broken relationship. Or, maybe God wants you to spend yourself on behalf of the children that Oasis serves.

Ask God. Listen. Be bold. Go out there and spend yourself.

Sponsorship Opportunities -

Exciting news about sponsorship - We added 30 new Child Sponsors in 2014. In 2015, we are going to turn up the volume on Education and Angel Sponsors, and Lord willing, will need more Child Sponsors sometime mid-year with the opening of The Shelter. With four children starting college and 11 kids from The Hill starting high school there are MANY opportunities for you to be involved sponsoring children. Please be thinking and praying about how it could look to welcome a Kenyan child into your family and heart!

Matching Donations -

Did you know that many companies have matching donations that they offer for your favorite charity? Just recently, we have received several significant corporate matching gifts just because a few employees took the time to ask! Feel free to explore this option and let us know if we can do something to help.

Please Pray For...

1. ...all of the Oasis children, that they will experience the joy of Christ's birth in a personal and meaningful way this Christmas season.

2. ...the staff at The Hill and The Valley, as their work is 24/7 even during the holidays.

3. ...a restful and refreshing time with family and friends for all of our Kenyan and US Operations Teams during the holidays.
