Dear Oasis Family,

I have a friend that sends out an occasional e-mail to her out-of-town family that is a brief summary of the many things happening in her life she calls it "This and That."  Similarly, our August newsletter has many little gems and important updates; so we, too, are calling August's Oasis newsletter "This and That."
Jim O'Malley and Diane Elliot at O'Hare airport after returning from an Oasis event in Baton Rouge, LA.

With fall in the air, Oasis is coming out of a very busy short-term missionary travel season and is starting to turn the page to address many other important issues. But, before we do we want to share with you some of the amazing life transformation stories from these past months. There are also a few important updates for those who have been concerned about recent events in Africa. So, sit back and enjoy a cold iced tea, and dive in to "This and That." And, as always, thanks so much for your prayers and amazing support. It is a privilege to work together to serve our Kenyan children.

God bless you,
Diane Elliot, Oasis Stateside Operations Administrator
Education Team Update
by Julie Barrett
Co-team Leader on the Education Trip with Jim O'Malley

Julie with one of our kids from The Hill
Spending two weeks in Kenya with the 2014 Education Team was a joy; it truly was an incredible experience that I will not forget. In some ways, school in Kenya and the United States are very different; in other ways, there are so many universal things that are true about educators on any continent.

One morning, I spent time in the "baby class" which consisted of about 40 students between the ages of 2 and 4. I watched in utter amazement as their teacher led them in songs and games that engaged them for the whole morning. It was clear that there is a deep mutual love between her and her students. I listened throughout the day as she told me about each student's strengths and weaknesses and things she was trying to do to help students who were having trouble. Great teachers (in any country) know their students well and care not only about a student's educational pursuits but life outside the classroom as well.

As I've returned to my teaching job and am getting ready for this school year, I cannot get the smiling faces of the beautiful kids and the hardworking Kenyan teachers out of my head. I loved all the teachers we met and was blown away by their dedication to their students and the creativity they used to effectively teach students in schools where resources are so very limited.

Providing excellent care for children has to include a great education. Giving our Oasis children educational skills will allow them to grow to their capacity and to use their abilities to bring hope and restoration to people in Kenya. Our team was honored to be able to serve in two schools and work alongside dedicated teachers. We left feeling positive about the work being done and appropriately burdened for the huge need there is for continued support, encouragement, and materials.

Why We Run
By Delilah Fritzler
JoAnn Hungness, Delilah Fritzler and Robin Thieme

Blessed...ridiculously. We have healthy families, homes far bigger and more luxurious than we need, wholesome and fresh food.... The list is endless. And, while we may not like to admit it to ourselves, because it implies that we need to strive for a higher standard of living, we are not "middle-class." Compared to 90% of the world's population, we are actually "ridiculous-class." Yes, that's a word. Ok, it's not....but it should be.

Oasis runners run out of a conviction that our ridiculous blessings are meant to be shared. It is out of thankfulness that we run. It is out of humble gratitude that we steward our time, sweat, hearts, and money. They were never ours anyway.

Oasis has a firm hold on our hearts. We run so The Shelter can cradle some of Kenya's 2.4 million orphans. We run so some of those orphans will know what it means to be loved by a family, to see life with eyes of hope. We run so the children of The Shelter can one day grow to be rescuers themselves, leading even more orphans out of poverty.

Consider what you have to give. TEAM Oasis needs runners, walkers, support teams, and fans. Are you ridiculously blessed like we are? Does the plight of these precious ones move you like it does us? Help us do something about it! Give of yourself...ridiculously:)

Important Kenya Updates - Ebola and Terrorist Activities
By Dr. T Scott Derse M.D., Oasis Medical Adviser

As most of us are aware, since early this year there has been a growing epidemic of the Ebola virus in western Africa. You may have also heard that Kenya has been designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a high-risk country given its status as a transport hub in East Africa. However, it is important to note that the outbreak has only affected the countries of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone at this time, all of which are on the northwest side of Africa and are more than 3000 miles away from our children's home sites. In addition our in-country missionary staff closely monitors any and all health (and other) threats and receives updates from the State Department in Kenya frequently.

The Ebola virus is a rare, but serious disease. This illness is spread by direct contact with a sick person's blood or body fluids. It is NOT spread through the respiratory tract like influenza, tuberculosis or other similar illnesses. The world's health organizations are working to try to contain this outbreak but there are numerous challenges being faced.

The World Health Organization recently called a press conference to address questions associated with air travel to Africa. Dr. Isabelle Nuttall has stated, "Air travel, even from Ebola-affected countries, is low-risk for Ebola transmission. Even if an individual infected with Ebola travels by plane, the likelihood of other passengers and crew coming into contact with the individual's body fluids is very low." In addition, Kenya Airlines is no longer flying to Ebola-infected countries. At present, travel within Kenya is considered medically safe and low risk.

Another area in which we receive many questions from our Oasis family is in regard to the terrorist activities in Kenya. The primary activity has been along the eastern border with Somalia, the east coast near Mombasa and in certain parts of Nairobi. Our children's homes are in southwest Kenya and are far removed from the current threat. Each of our sites are tranquil and relaxed; our children do not feel the effects of these activities. That being said, we revisit
Scott and Kathi Derse
our comprehensive Emergency Procedures Policy regularly, and if there are any changes we will make appropriate adjustments.

Thank you for your concern for our children, staff and missionaries. Please continue to pray for them and for their safety. We lean heavily on God's protection and embrace His words of encouragement for us -

"Be strong and of a good courage;

be not afraid, neither be you dismayed:

for the LORD your God is with you

wherever you go." Joshua 1:9.

Fundraising For Kids, By Kids

by Charlotte Kaiser

Charlotte Kaiser and part of her family in their fundraising tee shirts!

I first became involved with Oasis when I was in the 6th grade. From the very beginning, before ever actually going to The Hill, I could feel the love that radiated from Oasis. Hearing stories and seeing videos of the Oasis kids, it was apparent that they found great joy in their love for Jesus. It caused us to want to do something to help, and raising funds was a natural choice. Since then, I've had the opportunity to visit The Hill two times. It was there that I experienced first-hand the love Oasis provides for each individual child and the joy that comes when you are able to bring a smile to their faces. I was able to see the effects of our fundraising efforts, and this motivated me to seek more ways to help. Knowing we can help just by selling items or hosting a fun event is exciting and has enabled us to experience the blessing that comes with answering God's call.

Finding ways to fundraise came fairly easy! Once we began sharing the Oasis story with our church and school, the entire community seemed to be intrigued. We began with a fundraising goal and a simple idea- designing and selling shirts with the Oasis logo so we could purchase much-needed textbooks for The Hill. We also wanted to be sure that people would not only buy our shirts, but that they would tell everyone about Oasis. So far, my family and I have sold these shirts three years in a row, only changing the color each time, and every year they have been a HUGE success.

After the success of our first batch of t-shirts, we got a little more comfortable and started fundraising in different ways. One of our favorites was making Oasis the recipient of all the profits from our high school's Senior Men's Pageant. We sold tickets in the community, sold concessions and some people even donated extra money. We were the first people to request that the money from this annual pageant go towards a charity, not towards the school, and all it took was a suggestion and some effort on our part. Over the years, we have found more and more ways to fundraise by expanding the Oasis vision here in Houston, Texas and finding support within and beyond our community. With the joyful smiles of the Oasis kids motivating our hearts, we have used our talents and resources to send life-giving hope to kids who need us, and you can too!"

Quick Quotes From Kenya

  • "Wow!  What a day of accomplishments today has been... can't wait to see what tomorrow brings." - Bob Ruzga, after a great day of progress for The Shelter.
  • "I loved seeing Sponsors meet their sponsored child for the first time - it is magical!" - Dan Huffman, Team Leader for the Sponsor Team.
  • "On The Hill, the children have become a family. Watching them do homework after devotions gave me the best picture of them: working cooperatively to complete work, physically leaning into each other's "space", asking great questions about what it's like in America... This was my favorite night in Kenya. Although they have deep pain from their losses they now have hope." - Kathy Ford, teacher on the Education Team.
  • "The children Oasis serves are incredible. By far, the kids touched me the most. They are sweet, fun-loving, and have a heart for Jesus. They love to laugh, play games, and smile. They are beautiful children of God and they are furthering their relationship with Jesus every day." - Ashley Burgess, teacher on the Education Team.

Please Pray

1. This summer 34 Oasis friends visited Kenya. We are so thankful for everyone's safety, protection and that their missions were successful. For all involved, it was a powerful and life changing experience. Please pray for these recent travelers that God would continue to stir in their hearts for orphaned children around the world and especially for our special kids in Kenya.

2. Please pray for our Dental Team as they are in the midst of preparing for their trip in October.

3. We very much appreciate your continued prayers for our Managing Director search. Pray for the Oasis Board to have an extra measure of wisdom and discernment as they lead the search.

4. Please also continue to pray for our US and Kenya Operations Teams for rest and refreshment after a very busy summer, but also as they manage the many daily details to keep Oasis moving forward. A big thank you to Rick and Ann Smith (Kenya Operations) and Nate Kaiser and Diane Elliot (US Operations) who work tirelessly for our Kenyan kids.
