Graduation - a Time to Celebrate

Dear Oasis Family,

Every year around springtime, we joyfully celebrate the graduation of friends and family members. Although our American school year is a little different than Kenya's school schedule, by the end of 2014 Oasis will be celebrating our very first high school graduating class with four amazing young adults. These students have worked hard and defied the odds to get where they are today. Because of the dedication of their Child and High School Sponsors' commitment and sacrifice, these young adults have the opportunity to choose a different path than the one into which they were born.  We hope that their stories will inspire you and remind you to pray that they finish strong, as well as to pray for the other 25 high school students who we currently support.

God bless you,
The Oasis for Orphans Staff

Building Future Leaders in Kenya

The November 2014 high school graduation marks a milestone for Oasis.  Four of the students who began the Oasis program ten years ago will be graduating from high school!  These four students are remarkable in that they are among the top scoring students in their schools.  We are so proud of these four and have high hopes for their future collegiate opportunities.

In Kenya, after completing Form 4 of high school, students take a national exam.  Students earn a grade in seven subjects.  The scores are then averaged and an overall grade is given from A to E.  Students who receive a B or above are eligible for full-ride college scholarships to the best universities in Kenya.  Scoring is based on the British school scoring system.  For those of you who aren't familiar with this, getting above a C is quite an accomplishment.

Meet our students:

Mercy is a talented and driven leader with a passion for helping others. She will graduate from Maasai Girls High School this year.  She currently ranks second in the school, but is determined to finish first.  She is testing at an A level, and we are praying that she earns a scholarship to medical school.  She would like to become a neuro-surgeon.

We are particularly proud of Peris because she endured some personal struggles during her freshman year and had to repeat that year.  She has made remarkable changes due to her decision to follow Jesus whole-heartedly and is on target in her personal, spiritual, and academic life.  She would also like to become a neuro-surgeon.  She is completing her education at a national school in Kissi and is testing at an A level.

Pauline is a quiet, yet confident, young woman.  She is a picture of the inner peace that God brings and is a faithful steward of her time and talents, plodding along consistently and diligently in her work. She will be graduating from a national school in Narok.  She is also an A-level student. Pauline dreams of becoming a nurse and we are praying she will receive a scholarship towards this as well.

Finally, Dan, the only male graduate this year, will be finishing Form 4.  Dan is a servant leader and a strong role-model for the younger children at the children's home.  For various reasons, Dan has had to change high schools three times.  Each transfer put him in a better school, but he entered each new school well behind his new classmates.  Dan has also been plagued with recurrent typhoid, which has kept him out of school at various times. Dan has had to work incredibly hard to catch up and get to where he is now.  He is consistently testing at a B level and we are so proud of his determination and endurance.

High School Sponsors Needed

Currently we have a need for several new High School Sponsors to come alongside and support our students. High schools in Kenya are all boarding schools so it is not an easy commitment the cost is high, but your investment will change the future of one of our Oasis young adults. For $120 a month, you will provide room, board, tuition and school books for a high school student. If you or someone you know would be willing to be a High School Sponsor please contact us at info@oasisfororphans.org

Sponsorship - Part of the Oasis "Village"

It takes a "Village" working together to serve children in our Oasis programs. In Kenya it takes dozens of staff, missionaries, teachers, and pastors to build into the lives of our children on a daily basis. Here in the US it takes a team of prayer and financial supporters to meet their needs as well. Working together on both sides of the Atlantic we have developed the village that gives our children a chance to grow and blossom into capable and caring adults.

Oasis offers three types of sponsorship opportunities -

Education Sponsors ensure that each child is given the opportunity to reach his/her full educational potential.

Child Sponsors take on the role of parent/family, building into the life of a child as he/she grows. (We will talk about Child Sponsorship more in our June newsletter.)

Angel Sponsors supplement sponsorship for sponsor families who are unable to cover the full costs of sponsorship.

Oasis sponsors come together to love our children like a village; when we do this, we show our precious children they are treasured and that we have faith in them and their potential.

Kenyan High School Education

by Jim O'Malley

Jim and Kenyan teacher Charles in 2011

"As I've grown into my role as Education Coordinator for Oasis for Orphans, I've learned that understanding the Kenyan educational system takes a tremendous cultural mind-shift, especially when it comes to high school education. Unlike in the U.S., there are no second chances. A student must do well in high school to have the slightest chance at a university-level education. The options here (U.S.) are so diverse- not so in Kenya. On our last education trip (2011), I learned that our children are ambitious. Class 8 students had laser-like focus as they prepared for their KCPE exam. This 'make-or-break' test determines the high schools they might attend. Our kids wanted to do well on this exam, go to a good high school and to attend university. There was no question that they prayed and hoped this might be their future."

Jim O'Malley is the Oasis for Orphans Education Coordinator and will be co-leading a team of teachers going to Kenya this summer. Although the team is full, if you have any education questions for Jim you can contact him at info@oasisfororphans.org

Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for some challenging issues with a staff member on The Hill.

  • Pray for the new construction at The Shelter that we will make wise decisions and good progress.
  • Pray for the Oasis board and staff as we daily work on behalf of children in southwest Kenya.

Million Dollar Round Table
Foundation Grant

The MDRT Foundation Board of Trustees has awarded Oasis for Orphans a $5,000 grant to help build The Shelter through their Worldwide Grant Program. Adam Solano, a member of the MDRT and Oasis Child Sponsor, brought this grant to our attention and several months later was at the Celebration event to personally present the generous donation to Tom Andersen.

In addition to our many individual donors and sponsors, we are blessed to occasionally receive funding from corporations and foundations. If you are a part of a matching gift program at your work or know of a corporation or foundation that might be interested in supporting the efforts of Oasis, we welcome the opportunity to talk with you about the possibilities.
Oasis News
  • One of the high school girls on The Hill won a singing competition in her school and was invited to compete in Nairobi.  She qualified in Nairobi to move on to the next level of competition.  If she wins, the prize will be scholarship money towards her high school expenses.
  • First term school break began last week for children in Kenya.  Forty-five students from The Hill and eight students from The Valley will be participating in a week long Youth Conference led by Pastor Dave Griffin from The Chapel.
  • Our Oasis children from The Hill, along with their local support group, had the opportunity to participate in an exciting field trip to the Maasai Mara game park!
Rock from The Shelter
Rockin' Out at The Shelter

Over the last few months, dozens of workers have been breaking rocks by hand to provide the necessary materials for making concrete. While we are not likely to see rock- breaking done by hand here in the States, in Kenya it is a good job that provides a living for many families.

TEAM Oasis - Ready to Run

Oasis' very own charity running team, TEAM Oasis, is our primary way of raising funds for major projects, such as the building of The Shelter, our second children's home site.  TEAM Oasis now has 20 teams gearing up for a variety of races. See the TEAM Oasis website for a list of races and to join one of our mighty teams! Also, because of our successful recruitment efforts with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, TEAM Oasis was awarded 69 guaranteed spots for the Marathon. We have 15 spots yet to fill. Please contact Kim Huffman at kim@oasisfororphans.org to find out more about running the Chicago Marathon for TEAM Oasis.
