YEAR-END EVENT RECAP
We would like to thank all those who attended the year-end event "O Little Town" in December. It is such a special and unique opportunity when we can all gather as one Oasis family and celebrate all the blessings that Oasis has had in the past year. It is a time when you can see the faces of the children that you support, hear about the work being done within Oasis, and even get an update from the Smith family. We would also like to acknowledge the generous giving that took place at this event. Your donations have already allowed us to move forward with many projects on The Hill and we are truly humbled by your gift. |

TEN DOLLARS COVERS TEN TOES

Every year, the Sunday school at the Chapel, called The Great Adventure (TGA), does a fundraiser for Oasis for Orphans. This year the leaders at TGA and Oasis decided that the fundraiser should not just be focused on the Oasis kids but on all of the children at the local school there. The school that the Oasis children attend has about 350 children plus 50 staff members that serve those children. So, after talking to the staff on The Hill it was decided that a large need of the children was shoes. Many of these kids have never had a new pair of shoes, especially a pair of new tennis shoes, and it would be an incredible gift to them.
Then the campaign began. Starting around Thanksgiving and all the way until Christmas the kids of TGA brought in their "ten dollars to cover ten toes". It was so humbling to watch kids come in with their allowances and count their change out with big smiles on their faces, so excited to give to those who had less than them. By Christmas day all of the money had been raised for every pair of shoes needed! Now all we had to do was call the Smith family in Kenya and ask them to pick up the shoes.

The Smith Family then had a big challenge in front of them, which was to find 400 high quality pairs of shoes in Kenya. Most stores in Kenya have never had to sell that many shoes at once. Day after day the Smith family went to try to find the shoes and came up empty. Then came a shoe miracle. The day before all of the shoes were needed on The Hill, the Smith family found a shoe warehouse filled from top to bottom with all of the shoes needed for the kids at the school! The next day, a group of sponsors from America, the Smith family, and many other TMD staff gathered all of the children from the school and put their new shoes on their feet. The children were so excited to have new shoes and kept dancing and running around trying to already get the most out of their new shoes. A BIG THANK YOU to all of the TGA staff and kids for making this a day these children will never forget! |
 MEET STAFF MEMBER, EMMANUEL
Meet Emmanuel. Emmanuel is the driver for Trans Mara Development (TMD) and for the Children's Home. He has been on staff with TMD for a little over one year now, although he has been a part of the community on The Hill since he was born.
When Emmanuel's mother was pregnant with him, his father walked out on his mother and their four daughters, leaving them to survive on their own. Desperate to provide for her children, his mother went to live with her brother Joseph (the current director of the Children's Home). Emmanuel was raised by his mother and lived in Joseph's home until Joseph paid for and sent Emmanuel to get a high school education. After high school, in 2005, Emmanuel moved home to help his mother care for their land. During his time at home Emmanuel met his wife Patricia. They married in 2009 and had their first baby, Hope, in 2010. However, it was also during this time that Emmanuel's mother passed away from kidney failure. Emmanuel wasn't sure of where he would work nex. But then Joseph offered Emmanuel a job at the Children's Home as a driver and sent him to driving school. His first official drive was taking the Oasis board from Nairobi to The Hill. Emmanuel has said, "The reason I like working at the Children's Home is that I am able to provide for my family, meet people from all over the world, and interact with these children everyday."
In the next few years, Emmanuel would like to go to college to get his degree in management so that he may work at The Children's Home as a coordinator. Emmanuel is a wonderful, godly man of the highest integrity and because of this he is an excellent example to our kids on The Hill of a life well lived. We are so blessed to have him on our staff.
Emmanuel is one of our many staff members who is currently in need of sponsorship. By sponsoring a staff member you will provide a fair salary and health benefits for that staff member, and he/she can, in turn, continue to care each day for the kids of Oasis. If you would like to sponsor Emmanuel or another staff member of The Children's Home please email mal@oasisfororphans.org to inquire about staff sponsorship. Your gift would be greatly appreciated. |

...AND ON THE HILL
The last couple of months on The Hill have been an extremely busy and exciting time for the kids and the surrounding community. Here are some of the highlights:
- Since Christmas Day, the Children's home has welcomed seventeen new orphans into the program. All of the children have their own unique and amazing stories on how they came to the Children's Home, and it is so clear that they belong there. They have started school and have been welcomed by all the other children.
- On February 20th the Bishop of The Church of God arrived on The Hill with a full entourage of government officials, church officials, and full choir to recognize many accomplishments of the TMD and Oasis at the Children's Home. He came to commission dorm 2, the well, and Rick Smith and his family as missionaries here. The entire community gathered for two days and we even shut down the local government with the celebration!
 - For two weeks in February a group of child sponsors traveled to Kenya to meet their sponsored child and spend time getting to know the community on The Hill. They also were able to minister to the Smith family by giving them a small dose of American culture and re-connecting with old friends.
- We now have seven Oasis children in secondary school. In December five of our children took their exams to graduate into secondary school and they passed! So, as of January we have seven children studying in high school and working towards their diplomas.

MEET LIVIA
My name is Livia. I'm a new staff member for Oasis for Orphans and am so excited to be on this mission with you in support of 94 awesome orphan children in Kenya.
Here's a little of my background. I grew up in the town of Itasca, IL. I currently live in Chicago with my husband, Scott. We are blessed with a supportive family who live in Itasca, Phoenix, San Diego and Denver. We also have Rex, our jack russell terrier dog-child. I attended college at Valparaiso University, where I studied Nursing and English Literature. Over the years, I served in a variety of clinical settings and received a Master's degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Case Western Reserve University. Most recently I worked at Abbott for eight years, which is where I met the Scott Hayward and first heard about Oasis.
Oasis came into my life about three years ago when Scott and Jill shared photos over a lunch hour from their trip to the orphanage they started in Kenya. What I saw and heard on that day weighed very heavily on me. I couldn't sleep that night thinking about these children and their stories. There was something unique about the kids: they had vulnerability and sorrow in their eyes; but at the same time, they expressed so much joy and hope for the future. After a few weeks of learning more about Oasis, I could no longer ignore a strong tug I was feeling to help these children overcome their loss and help provide them with an opportunity to achieve their dreams.
Shortly thereafter, Scott introduced me to Ann Smith, who is also a nurse and shared the same passionfor these children. Together we started an Oasis medical team and coordinated a medical mission to The Hill. It was during this medical mission that I had the chance to meet each Oasis child face-to-face. I would have never thought I would have the chance to not only meet, but know the children I saw in Jill and Scott's photos! I even personally met and bonded with Beatrice, the child who is now our sponsored child. Most importantly during this visit I witnessed first-hand the huge difference that Oasis had made in so many people's lives.
The above experience combined with other things recently led me to a life-changing decision: I decided to leave my great job and dedicate my time fully to Oasis for Orphans. I feel very fortunate to be in the position to do this and believe that this new endeavor will be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding things that my husband and I can do as a family.
I personally want to thank you for being on this incredible journey with Oasis and for giving so much of yourselves to these awesome children. You have made a world a difference already with your generosity. I look forward to meeting you some day in-person and getting to know more of you like family.
Sincerely,
Livia Krzeminski
