Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center Joins Safe Kids, National Safety Advocates to Highlight Danger of Child Heatstroke in Cars

   Dr. Margaret Fisher

To date in 2012, 15 children have died in from heat stroke after being left in unattended vehicles. In 2011, a total of 33 similar deaths were confirmed.

The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center is joining with The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) in taking an active role in getting the word out about the safe transportation of children.  ACF has teamed up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Safe Kids USA to promote the "Look Before You Lock Campaign."  These organizations are reminding all parents and caregivers and child care providers about the importance of double checking cars, vans and buses for children that may have been left behind.

Margaret Fisher, M.D., chair of Pediatrics and medical director of The Children's Hospital at Monmouth, notes that when outside temperatures are in the low 80s, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach deadly levels in only 10 minutes, even with a window rolled down 2 inches. Children's bodies in particular overheat easily, and infants and children under 4 years old are at the greatest risk for heat-related illness.
