Children's Hospital to Host Open House on Childhood Psychiatric & Learning Disorders

In recognition of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 6-12), Neelam Sell, M.D., the developmental-behavioral pediatrician at The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center pictured here, will host a free open house on Monday, May 7, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the hospital in suite SH001. The event is part of the Child Mind Institute's Speak Up for Kids campaign.

Though 15 million children in the United States have psychiatric and learning disorders, fewer than half of them will be identified and get the help they need.

Designed for parents and educators, the open house will focus on psychiatric and learning disorders among children and adolescents, stressing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.  Dr. Sell will be on-hand to answer questions about mental health disorders as well as offer video presentations and handouts about ADHD, anxiety and behavioral management.

Did You Know?

You might be surprised to hear that a child can die from heat stroke on a 72-degree day. There's a medical reason why this happens to children - their bodies aren't the same as adults. A child's body can heat up five times faster than an adult's. Now think of how your car usually feels warmer inside than out. Did you know that even on a mild day, the temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes? On an 80-degree day, the inside of a closed car can quickly reach 100 degrees in the time it takes to run into the store for an errand. Heat stroke happens when the body cannot cool itself fast enough and the core temperature rises to dangerous levels.
