Dear Friends,

We're living in a a great time for knowledge. Never before has the human race enjoyed such instant access to all manner of facts and information. Want to know something? Just ask Google, or Wikipedia, or eHow.

But here's the question. Has all that knowledge made us smarter? Are we making better choices, as individuals and as a people?

That's debatable. Because there's something else we need that doesn't automatically come along with knowledge. We also need wisdom.

You can't boost your wisdom with a few clicks of the computer mouse. No, wisdom is far more elusive. But wisdom is still not the be-all and end-all.

In the second verse of 1 Corinthians 13, Paul  extols the advantages of "prophetic powers," and of "understanding all mysteries and all knowledge." He goes on to celebrate "faith, so as to remove mountains." Yet, all these wonderful capabilities, he goes on, are as nothing, compared to the one gift that is of surpassing value.

That ultimate gift is love.

Recently, developmental psychologists have taken to extolling the virtues of "emotional intelligence." There's a sort of knowledge we can cultivate that isn't so easily measured and that doesn't fit neatly into a college curriculum. It's knowledge not of how other people think, but of how they feel.

That's a few steps along the way to understanding what Paul's getting at, but it's still not all the way there. Love, in his view, is a gift of the Spirit. Such genuine love as we give and receive in this life is not generated by us, but comes from the universal fountain of love. It comes from God.

It is through Jesus Christ that we come to know God's love most fully.

The love of God abides. It is eternal. And, of all things, it is worth pursuing.

Join us this Sunday as we continue our study of God's love in Jesus Christ!

Presbyterian Women Disaster Preparedness Training

Lightning. Storms. Floods. Hurricanes. Fires. Disasters bring chaos to hundreds of thousands of lives every year and have lasting effects.  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and Presbyterian Women (PW) have begun a collaboration to help prepare congregations and presbyteries to reduce the chaos following a disaster by planning ahead.

Disasters bring chaos to hundreds of thousands of lives every year and have lasting effects. Disaster Preparedness Training is a train-the-trainer event designed to give women the tools needed to conduct disaster preparedness workshops for churches, presbyteries and communities. These trainings are for women only, by application only; you do not have to be a member of Presbyterian Women. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by PDA and you must attend the entire eight-hour training to be certified and commissioned as a PWPDA DP trainer. You can bring HOPE out of chaos.

Three trainings are currently scheduled:

Saturday, October 8, 2016
First Presbyterian Church
Danville, IL

Wednesday, October 26, 2016
Ferncliff Camp and
Conference Center
Little Rock, AR 72223

Sunday, October 30, 2016
Franciscan Renewal Center
Scottsdale, AZ 85253

If you are outside these areas or are unable to attend the trainings, please email pda@pcusa.org to register your interest for future trainings.

                        VOLUNTEER VILLAGE

This past Wednesday, Lend A Hand hosted a dinner at our church to celebrate all the work that has been accomplished since Superstorm Sandy.  A great number of PPPC volunteers were in attendance. This past week was Lend A Hand's 30th work team to come to the Jersey Shore. All but one of those groups have stayed in our Volunteer Village. Lend A Hand has only one more team scheduled to come to PPPC - a group of Elizabethtown College students - in early October.

Here are some statistics shared that evening by Lend A Hand office coordinator Jim Davis about those 30 work trips:
245 individuals have come, some of them numerous times
(507 weeks of service altogether).
114 of them have been women.
Nelson Lewis has come 20 times,
Bob Keefer has come 17 times,
Leroy Ziegler has come 16 times and
Bill Charron has come 15 times.
Lend A Hand has worked on 115 different homes,
from South Amboy to Ventnor.
Their volunteers have put in over 18,000 hours.

Dig They Must

Point Pleasant Beach High School's renovation work continues. As is often the case with construction projects, this one is taking longer than expected. The contractors continue to borrow our parking lot for their cranes and other heavy equipment at certain times during the week, as they rush to get the work finished before the first day of school.

We're glad to be able to offer this assistance to our good neighbors at the school, but please do be advised that, if you come by the church on a weekday, it's possible that the parking lot may be unavailable. There's still plenty of parking on the street, since school isn't in session yet.

 Thanks for your understanding!
