Dear Friends, Recently I was reading a book written by a pastor and a scholar. He has written many books over the course of his ministry. The book I was reading was on prayer and was about how to live a life of living prayer.
One of the suggestions he made, which he himself does, is to regularly read the Psalms. He said that he will read the psalms until a word, a phrase or a verse speaks to him. The idea is to then stop and let that part of the psalm percolate inside of you. Perhaps meditate on the thought or thoughts that come to you. Allow God's spirit to speak through the psalmist's words to whatever is going on in your life at that moment.
I have been doing this - reading the psalms in this way. It frees me from trying to slug my way through a psalm that is not addressing me at that point in time or starting at the beginning of the psalter and plowing my way through until the end. For the truth is that different parts of scripture speak to us at one time and not so much at another
So it was that I happened upon Psalm 36. I stopped when I got to verse 6b which reads, "Lord, you save both humans and animals." What a beautiful thought. We know that God loves us and cares for us. Yet to have the psalmist express that God loves and cares enough for animals to save them as well gave me insight into the depth of God's love for the entirety of all that God created. God loves all that God has created, loves enough to save them, save us. The psalm goes on "Your faithful love is priceless God." Amen to that.
I hope to see you in church this Sunday so we can worship our awesome God together.
Peace and Blessings,
