Weekly News For
Sunday, July 3, 2016
Dear Friends,

It's Fourth of July weekend, which is an excellent time to get to know a little-known New Jersey patriot: John Witherspoon, one of our four signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence, Witherspoon was enormously influential in his time. But he's largely forgotten today. Why?

It may have something to do with the fact that many people today are uncomfortable mixing religion and politics. Witherspoon had no such compunction. In his role as President of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and pastor of Princeton's First Presbyterian Church (now Nassau Presbyterian), he didn't hesitate to advocate for independence for Britain's American colonies. Like the other signers of the Declaration, Witherspoon knew he would hang if the rebellion failed. He signed anyway.

Join us in worship this Sunday as we celebrate the Lord's Supper, sing some patriotic hymns, and remember this courageous servant of God, who had such an important role in giving the American Revolution a spiritual foundation.
