Dear Friends,
Sometimes words take centuries to develop. Others burst onto the scene in an instant. None of us had heard the word "Brexit" a year ago. Today, it's on everyone's lips - not only in Europe, but here in the United States as well. Brexit is of particular concern to anyone with an interest in financial markets (which, in this era of globalization, is all of us). It remains to be seen what the long-term implications of this decision by the British people will be. "No man is an island," wrote the Christian preacher and poet John Donne, centuries ago. "Each man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." The British stock market has crashed, and the pound has fallen to its lowest exchange rate in decades. We have every reason to hope that the financial storm surge being felt on European shores will end up being more like a ripple by the time it reaches this side of the Atlantic, but with all the ways financial markets are interconnected, that seems unlikely. "Brexit" is a new word, but at times like these, we rely on a very old word: the oldest word of all. It's the word that, as the Gospel-writer John reminds us, was "in the beginning": the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. I'm writing this in Portland, Oregon, where I've been attending our denomination's General Assembly. The Assembly's theme, based on the Letter to the Ephesians, is "the hope in our calling." We Christians are bold speak of hope in times like these, and we do it based on that very old Word of ours - the Word that, by the power of the resurrection, is forever new. This Sunday we ordain and install deacons and ruling elders - celebrating the hope in their calling, and ours. I'll have some things to share with you about what went on at the General Assembly. I hope you can join us!

SUMMER GENEROSITY - Wherever you find yourself during these summer months, we hope you'll continue to remember the church in your financial giving, even if you aren't present each Sunday in worship. You may want to take advantage of our secure online giving option, which is a great way to maintain your regular giving even while you're away. You can even pre-plan automatic deductions from your bank account for whatever dates you specify. Thanks for being a good Christian steward, all year round! CONGRATULATIONS TO ROBIN FIORENTINO - Who graduated from Point Pleasant Borough High School. Robin's name was accidentally omitted from last week's recognition. Robin will be attending Kean University in the Fall.
SUMMER OFFICE HOURS - During the months of July and August the church office will be closing at noon on Fridays. Please have all bulletin information in by Thursday mornings.
TRIPOD FOUND - A camera tripod in a blue bag was found in the Sanctuary this week. Please check the lost and found bin in the North Hall if it is yours.
HOST FAMILIES WANTED - In July our community will be visited by a group of students from Spain for 4 weeks. The students will arrive on June 24th and depart on the July 23rd. The students, age 15-16 are coming because they have a desire to learn about the American culture as well as improve their English. The students are well-motivated, English proficient, fully insured and have their own spending money. The basic responsibility of the family is to provide a bed, food, and lots of TLC by allowing the student to feel like a part of the family. Currently, there is a need of host families for 2 students. If you are able to host or desire more information please call Scot King (732) 892-2571, or email at Scot4Camille@gmail.com. Hosting is an extremely enlightening and rewarding experience for the entire family. Thank you. SHORE DELIGHTS COOKBOOK - Are still on sale for $10 each. This beautiful and delicious cookbook is a must have for the 4th of July. The proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will be used to staff the nursery. Church Picnic Signups
There is a New location this year for our Church Picnic.
The picnic will now be held at Riverfront Park, Point Pleasant Boro, on August 7, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m.
Worship begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by the picnic under the Pavilion. There will be Food and Games (including a playground). Attached to the Maxson Avenue Municipal Beach, this facility has a beach area that can be used for fishing or crabbing, however NO SWIMMING is permitted. There will be no Lifeguards available at this facility.
We ask that you sign up to bring either an Appetizer, Salad or Dessert. You can email Kerry at kljones70@comcast.net and let her know how many and what you will bring or look for the yellow sign up sheet in the Narthex. As in years past, we need 100 people to sign up to reach our goal. |
Endowment and Emergency Giving
The Endowment Fund provides a way for persons to give gifts that provide for the long-term future of the church. Since its inception in 1945, our endowment has been built up by the gifts and bequests of faithful members and friends, to strengthen the ongoing work of the church. These donors recognized the opportunity to give a gift that keeps on giving, since investment returns magnify the impact of their original gifts.
The Endowment and Emergency Fund was created for a two-fold purpose; the first and main reason is as an emergency reserve fund to be drawn upon in only the most extreme cases. The second is that when the fund reaches a desired goal, the earnings could then be used for Church support without lowering the principal of the fund. No monies from this fund are used for any purpose of the Church except in most serious emergencies affecting the very life of the Church, i.e., destruction of the Church building, area wide catastrophes, extreme financial depression and only with approval in a congregational meeting. Definite plans for repayment of the loan are required until the amount borrowed is replaced.
Friends and members can contribution in memory or in honor of loved ones or by making bequests through wills. Donations (currently a minimum of $1000) in memory or in honor of loved ones are recognized with an engraved plate in the rear of the sanctuary.
Your estate plan is a statement about what matters most to you. With a bequest, you can create a legacy that expresses your values, honors a loved one and supports those institutions that are most important to you and your family.
There are various ways to give to the Endowment and Emergency Fund, many of which may offer significant tax benefits to the donor. Here are some of the options to consider in charitable gift planning: * Cash * Appreciated securities * Bequest by will * Real estate * Personal property
* Name Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church as a percentage beneficiary of your retirement benefits * Name Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy * Life income plans (Charitable Remainder Unitrust or Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust)
If you would like to know more please call the office or speak directly with Frank Scarpone.

Note from Sunday School Coordinator Tricia Stoffers
Sunday School has wrapped up for the 2015-16 school year, and I can not tell you how happy I am with how this year went. This is my second year as the director of the program and there has definitely been a learning curve. My main goal is simply to make each year better than the last.
I really want to thank the parents, for all of the encouragement and feedback they have offered throughout the year. Thank you for all of your dedication in getting your children here even though life was busy and other responsibilities were calling. Most importantly, thank you for sharing your children with me! We have been so blessed to have such an amazing and wonderful group of kids here at PPPC. It was honestly my pleasure to be able to hang out with them every Sunday and to teach them about our Lord and the stories of the Bible. I am so excited to welcome them back in September.
Thank you to the PPPC staff that has provided unending support and encouragement for this program. Pastor Carl and Pastor Linda are always checking in making sure everything is ok with the program and willing to address and needs we may have, the Caring Committee and the Session members make sure the program has the assets it needs for success, Kim and Donna in the office who always make things happen for me , and my good friends Tony and Courtney in Youth Connection for shepherding me and helping to coordinate fun events.
Thank you to the PPPC congregation for all of your kind words and interest in our program. The kids really feel like they are a part of the church because you all are so kind to them. Simple things, like compliments on knowing the answer to one of Pastor Carl or Pastor Linda's question, make them feel so special. So many of you have reached out to me to offer some kind words and encouragement. I can't tell you how much that means to me.
Finally, I have to say thank you to Karen, Kerry, Marian, and Ryan for ALL of their hard work and dedication to this program. Without them, this program would be nothing. Karen and Kerry have done wonders in the preschool room where the kids come to both play and learn. Marian is always my rock and there when I need her. And Ryan still manages to come in and help out in spite of all that was happening this year. They all are truly doing God's work.
So, again, Thank You!! I am so excited for the 2016-17 school year, and I have already started planning things to make it our best year yet.
I hope you all enjoy the summer
Peace and Blessings, Tricia Stoffers
