PPPC to Host Monmouth Presbytery, Saturday, May 21 On Saturday, May 21, from 9:00 am till mid-afternoon, we're going to be hosting the meeting of Monmouth Presbytery. The Presbytery is composed of 45 Presbyterian congregations including PPPC, and is the next higher council, or governing body, above the Session. Approximately 100 people will be joining us: pastors and associate pastors of the Presbytery's congregations, ruling elder commissioners elected by the Sessions, as well as specialized ministers, all make up the Presbytery.
The Chancel Choir will be singing for the morning worship service, which begins at 9:45 am, and the Rev. Larissa Kwong-Abazia, Vice-Moderator of the General Assembly, will be the preacher.
Thanks, in advance, to members of Presbyterian Women who will be preparing lunch for the Presbytery that day, as well as to the Chancel Choir and other PPPC folk who will be giving of their time to welcome our fellow Presbyterians and make their visit here a rich experience.
While only members of Presbytery and elected commissioners can vote in the business meeting, all are most welcome to attend the meeting, and in particular to join in the worship service at 9:45. After worship, the Presbytery will be recessing its business meeting for some educational workshops on money and stewardship in the church: all are welcome to attend these, as well.

Dear Friends, Last Sunday, Pastor Linda gave us a rousing Pentecost sermon. We heard how the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles as wind and fire, and how they were empowered to bring the good news to people of every culture. It's a call our Lord issues to us as well. Now the question is, "What next?" We know what we're supposed to do. We've heard the promise that the Spirit will go with us to cover all our fears and shortcomings. When and how do we begin? To answer that question, we move further back in the Gospels to the story of Jesus' first call to the disciples. He found James and John - sons of Zebedee the fisherman - by the seashore, mending their nets. Net-mending is a bit of essential maintenance, something everyone in the fishing business must do. Without nets that are intact and free of holes, the catch will be scanty. We can think of worship as a time of net-mending. Yet, there comes a time when worship is ended, the benediction is pronounced and it's time to return to the workaday world. What then? What do we do with all those fine, carefully preserved nets? What difference does our Christian commitment make - not for us, but for our neighbors?
See you in church!

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the Choral Bells for their dedication and the many hours of work they have given to this unique form of music worship. We ring in four church services from September through June and participate in the annual invitation only bell festival at the Presbyterian Church of Toms River. I cannot stress the importance of every ringer as each set of bells that a member rings maintains the continuity of the entire group. And so, to each and every ringer I extend my deepest thanks for your continued devotion and support to your church, to the group and to me. Bill Shoppell

Rebecca Crate Ordination at Pt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church,
THIS SUNDAY, May 22, 3:00 PM
May 22 will be a day of celebration for our church as Rebecca Crate will be ordained as a Teaching Elder (Minister of the Word and Sacrament) by the Presbytery of Monmouth, here in our Sanctuary. From her baptism, to her confirmation, to her call to ministry, Becca has been a part of this congregation, and we are honored to be a part of this great occasion. The Presbytery of Baltimore has voted to receive Becca as a member upon her ordination, and she will begin her ministry as Pastor of the Springfield Presbyterian Church of Sykesville, Maryland.
After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at Arcadia University, Becca went on to Princeton Seminary and earned her Masters of Divinity degree in 2012. Becca and her wife, Lorna, then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. It was there that she attended the University of Edinburgh's New College, earning her Masters of Theology in Ministry.
As an artist, Becca has become very interested in liturgical-based art, primarily in the form of 3D installations. During her studies in ministry at the University of Edinburgh, she explored the use of art in Reformed Worship through her dissertation, "Visual Art as an Enhancement of or Distraction from Reformed Worship." Some of you may remember her Bethlehem Star this past Christmas. Once again her own creations will be incorporated as part of the Ordination service.
Please join us, with the entire Crate family, in the Sanctuary this Sunday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m. for this joyous occasion. A reception will follow in the CE Annex.

Just Another Way of Giving
When our church was founded in 1882, nearly all financial support came in the form of cash, placed in the offering plate on Sunday morning. Back then, checks were uncommon. Most people received a pay envelope at the end of the week, and set aside a portion of that cash as their gift to the church.
There were some other ways of giving. Here in this community, it was not unusual for a basket of Jersey tomatoes, or even a few fish wrapped in newspaper, to appear on the porch of the old manse on Laurel Avenue, or for donated clams or oysters to be on the menu for a church supper. It was a pretty direct way for those early Point Pleasant Presbyterians to live out the biblical instructions about tithing.
Times change, and giving methods change. Our present offering envelopes were designed with cash and checks in mind, but many of us carry a lot less cash around with us than we used to. We use credit or debit cards to buy our groceries. Many of us are also using electronic payment methods, such as our bank's electronic bill-paying service.
Setting the church up as one of those bill-paying-service payees - either as a one-off transaction or as a recurring weekly or monthly automatic debit - is the most cost-effective way to make an electronic gift to the church. In that case, the church receives a bank check in the mail a few days later for 100% of the gift, with no transaction fee deducted. It's also possible to do the same thing using the giving button at the bottom of the church's main web page, or by using a smartphone to scan the QR code printed in the church bulletin each week. The church pays transaction fees for those bank-account debits: 50 cents for a one-time gift, or 25 cents for each recurring gift. A larger amount is deducted from gifts made via credit card: there's a 45-cent transaction fee, plus an additional deduction of 2.75% for Mastercard, Visa or Discover transactions or 3.5% for American Express. Even so, paying those transaction fees is more than worth it for the church, if it means more gifts are received because of the convenience those methods offer. If you're a smartphone user, you'll find the Give By Text option to be the easiest of all - once you've made your first gift-by-text and have transmitted your bank account number and routing number (or your credit card number). That's the first and last time you'll ever have to key in those numbers - after that, the system remembers your preferred giving method, and makes giving as simple as texting "$20" (or the amount of your choice) to our special phone number: 732-451-7575. It's a number unique to this church, used only for the purpose of electronic giving. Transaction fees are similar to those for gifts made using the web-age button. You can even do it during the worship service, right from your pew! Why not give it a try? You'll be amazed to find out how easy and convenient it is. And if you want to use the offering plate as an act of worship, you can still do so by taking one of the Alternative Offering cards from the pew rack and placing it in the offering plate, for the ushers to bring forward with all the other gifts. Sure, it may seem a little strange at first - but putting a check into the offering plate seemed just as strange to some of those early Point Pleasant Presbyterians. Times change, but it's still true that every gift, given cheerfully and prayerfully, honors our Lord!

Sunday School News
Hello everyone!
I hope your week is going well. Last week we started on our movie "The Prince of Egypt." This is an animated film that chronicles the life of Moses. The film stars voice actors Michelle Pfeifer, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, just to name a few. It has a beautiful music score. which even got the film nominated for several awards. It was nominated for a Grammy and it took home an Oscar. Who said we Christians don't know how to rock?? So far, in the film, we have learned about how Moses was given up by his mother and found by Pharaoh's daughter. We saw how Moses grew up, never knowing his true roots until one day he encounters a slave woman who claims to be his sister. Initially, Moses doesn't believe her, but we watch as he starts to process this finding and make sense of it. It is finally confirmed in a vivid (but tastefully done) nightmare, retelling the story of how the Pharaoh demanded all Hebrew babies be drowned in the river, which was then confirmed by the Pharaoh, himself. We left off where Moses returns to the new temple being built and was finally truly seeing the horrible conditions the slaves were working and living in, and the awful, immeasurably difficult deeds they were expected to perform. Moses sees a slave being beaten and runs over to stop the guard. In the process, Moses accidentally knocks the guard off of a ledge, sending him falling to his death. This week, we will be continuing on with the movie. We will watch as Moses flees, even against the request of his brother Rameses. This is where Moses encounters the burning bush, and is told to bring his people to the promised land. Its going to be another great week, so don't miss out!
Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
