Dear Friends,

"Christ prays for us" are words we often hear on Sunday mornings, as part of the Assurance of God's Pardon. But what does it mean? If God and the Holy Spirit are united with Jesus Christ in the Trinity, then what does it mean to say Jesus - the risen Lord, who reigns in the heavenly places - is praying for us?

And what would Jesus pray for, anyway?

One answer comes to us in John 17:21, as we hear Jesus praying - with his disciples in mind - "that they may all be one." That phrase has become a leading motto of the modern ecumenical movement, that seeks to bring down the barriers that divide one Christian denomination from another.

It's Mother's Day this Sunday, and oneness is a powerful theme of family life. We begin our lives perfectly united with our mothers, in utero. After birth, we engage in a process the psychologists call "differentiation," as we gradually pull away from our parents and become our own people.

That necessary process can be a difficult one for parents and children alike, especially in the adolescent years.

We always live with a certain tension between oneness and independence. Our relationships with our mothers - both present and of blessed memory - are one stage where that tension plays out.

Come to worship this Sunday, as we honor all mothers and celebrate the special bond between parent and child!

         PPPC NEWS

COFFEE HOUR is an integral part of our fellowship with each other and also a great way to meet and greet visitors to our church. We are in need of coffee hour hosts for May 15 and May 29th.

Sharing Coffee Hour responsibilities with another person can be more fun!  It is a good idea to check the kitchen for needed supplies prior to Sunday morning.  Paper products are provided by the church, the coffee is started in the morning by Jake.  Besides setup and clean up, hosts are asked to bring simple items as well as a gallon of milk and one quart of half-and-half.

A sign-up sheet in located on the bulletin board on the kitchen wall near the water cooler.  To sign up or if you have any questions please contact Elaine Conheeney at 732-295-1884.

CONFIRMATION NEWS - Due to fluctuating student interest, this year's Confirmation Class series has been postponed until later this year or early next year.
Use Your Smartphone to Give to the Church!

HOW TO GIVE BY TEXT: Try using your smartphone to make a gift to the church - it's easy, fun and secure! Just text a dollar sign followed by the dollar amount, (example: $10) to our church's dedicated give-by-text phone number, 732-451-7575. The first time you give, you'll receive a text reply telling you how to enter your preferred payment method (credit/debit card number information or your bank routing and account number). You'll get an immediate text message back, confirming that the gift has gone through. The system will remember your payment details - so, after your first gift, future gifts are easier and quicker than writing a check! Electronic gifts are reported on the quarterly pledge statement we send you, just like any other gift. When you're in church, feel free to take one of the Alternative Offering cards from the pew rack and place it in the offering plate, as an act of worship.
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School News

Hello everyone!

Last week, we had a great time talking about Moses as a baby. Pastor Linda started us off during the children's sermon, when she told us the story of Moses and how he was saved as a baby. God was certainly with him when his mother put him in the basket and sent him down the river. Anything could have happened, but God protected him. We made a great craft to remind us of the story of Moses is the bulrushes.

This week, it's all about Moms!! One of the Ten Commandments tells us to honor our mothers, so we are doing just that. We will be making special Mother's Day crafts to show the moms in our lives how much we appreciate them.

Don't forget, to head upstairs after Sunday School for the annual Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast put on by the Youth Connection.

See you on Sunday.

Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers

MISSION

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK COMING MAY 15 - 22

Many families today are facing crisis. Beginning on Sunday evening, May 15 and continuing all week until the next Sunday morning, families currently in need will be arriving here at PPPC for overnight housing. They will be arriving as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) program. Up to 15 people may be arriving.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network creates a vital safety net for such families in churches and synagogues all over Ocean County. All client families include at least one child. Were it not for IHN, the County's Board of Social Services would have no choice but to house them in motel rooms - which, in the long term, are not optimal settings for children's healthy development.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of IHN. Beyond providing meals, staying overnight and other services essential to the program, volunteers offer compassionate assistance. So many of you have continuously volunteered over the years. You do simple but immeasurable things. You talk to the guest...and listen. You have responded to them with much compassion. To some, you have been their source of hope.  The video below is a great perspective on volunteering as well as the guest perspective.

Talking with guest and volunteers
Talking with guest and volunteers
We have several opportunities to volunteer but are always in need of overnight hosts especially. What do I need to do as an IHN volunteer? There are three types of volunteers needed to welcome our families each night:

1. A Meal Provider - Dinner hosts arrive by 5:00 p.m. and leave by 7:00 p.m. Prior to your night of cooking, you will be notified as to the number of adults and children needing dinner, as well as any special diet concerns. A simple meal is often best.

2. Hospitality Hosts arrive at 7:00 p.m and leave by 9:00 p.m. Hosts visit with our guests as they enjoy it and even play a game with some of the kids.

3. An Overnight Host - You have to be good at one thing to do this job: sleeping. Well, it's a little more than that, because you'll be staying in the building as a contact person, in case any of the families experiences an emergency. You arrive by 9:00 p.m. when things are usually pretty quiet. A comfy bunk bed or cot downstairs is provided as well as a continental breakfast. You'll be finished and on your way by 7:00 am.

Could the Lord be calling you to give of yourself in this way? If you feel that little nudge from the Lord, then please call or speak with Dorothy Tolley (732-892-9306), and let her know you would be glad to help. Sign up sheets are now in the Narthex.
Busy Hands for Mission

Busy Hands for Mission is a group of women who meet in the Fellowship Room on the first, fourth, and fifth Tuesday of each month to make items for others. We meet from 10 to 12 and enjoy having lunch together afterward.

Our projects include adult bibs, hospital gowns, and walker caddies which are given to the Visiting Nurses Association for their use. Baby hats and blankets are given to Jersey Shore Medical Center and Ocean Medical Center for newborn infants. Local nursing homes receive large and small walker caddies and lap robes. Dresses in various sizes are sent to Africa through the "Little Dresses for Africa" project. We also make the bags filled by our congregation with school supplies. Pillowcases are made and donated to Interfaith Hospitality Network and Crafty Fabrics, owned by Diane McColley. She distributes them to the children's units at hospitals. Teddy bears are given to children staying at our church through the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

If you would like to be a part of these projects, we need material, yarn, bias bindings, and other supplies. We are accepting gift cards to Joanne's, baby and medium weight yarn, cotton or cotton/polyester blend material of at least a yard in length, and large pieces of flannel for the teddy bears.

To join our group, for more information, or to donate, please contact Marilyn Rice 732 202-1696 or Sue Hankins 732 458-3823 or stop by on the first, fourth, or fifth Tuesday in the Fellowship Room. We have something for you to do even if you don't sew, knit, or crochet!
