Dear Friends,

We're very pleased to welcome to the pulpit this Sunday Rebecca Crate, a member of our congregation who has completed her theological studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. Pending a vote by the Presbytery of Baltimore to receive her as a member, Becca intends to begin her ministry as Pastor of the Springfield Presbyterian Church of Sykesville, Maryland. The plan is for her to be ordained by the Presbytery of Monmouth in our church Sanctuary on Sunday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m.

Becca will be preaching on Mark 6:30-42, the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Her topic is "FINDING THE BALANCE."

We'll also be celebrating the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. Following the worship service there will be a Communion Brunch in the Education Annex.

Join us!

New Adult Study on Prayer

Coming soon, a new adult study which asks, "Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Would you like to grow in this area of your spiritual life?" Consider joining with others to be part of a class called Pray, Eat, Grow. We will be using the book The Workbook of Living Prayer by Maxie Dunnam. This is a 20th anniversary updated version of a book that has sold over 500,000 copies and changed countless lives.

It is a 7 week study which uses a workbook format. A time commitment of 20-30 minutes a day will be needed outside of the weekly class. There is a daily reading which provides guidance in your individual prayer journey. We will share our insights, our
growing edges and learning as we gather for our weekly group journey.

The class will meet on Mondays beginning May 2nd. The first class will be for an hour and the next 6 classes will run from 10:30 to noonish. Since the last study group enjoyed having a meal together each week, we will build that into our class. This is the EAT part of the Pray, Eat, Grow.

The cost of the book is $10. If you have questions about the class please see Linda Chase. There is a sign up in the church narthex or call the church office. Books need to be ordered soon.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School News

Hello everyone!

Last week we began our unit on Moses. We've all seen those commercials about "The Most Interesting Man in the World". Well, I think Moses gives him a run for his money! We started off a little out of order, because I wanted to make sure we got one of the most important stories of Moses in- The story of how he received the Ten Commandments. We talked about what the Ten Commandments are and why they are so important. We agreed that they are still very relevant in today's culture and how we need to do our best to live by them. We all decided the easiest ones are not to kill and not to steal. However, we thought that lying and making sure not to covet our neighbor's (friend's) things might be a little harder sometimes. We also talked about how, even though we will never be able to be perfect and obey all the Commandments ALL the time, God understands we aren't perfect and He loves us anyway!

This week, we are starting at the beginning of the story of the life of Moses. It all started with the "Baby in the Bulrushes." We are going to learn about the sacrifice Moses' mom made to save him and how Moses was spared from certain death. It's going to be a good one, so don't miss out!

See you on Sunday.

Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
POINT BEACH PREP

This Week at Point Beach Prep

We cannot believe we are at the end of the alphabet!  This week we learned letter Z.  Our sign language word was "zebra".  We read ZooBeDoo, The Z was Zapped, Zoom to the Moon, Zora's Zucchini, and Zachary Zebra's Zippity Zooming.  Some of our activities were zebra art, making a zoo, and zigzag cutting.

On Wednesday, we were entertained by Nolan and Josie, musicians who brought their guitar and flute and sang songs with us.

On Thursday
and Friday, the Child Development Class from the High School came over and did Sign Language lessons teaching us colors.  We continued the color lesson and added food coloring into ziplock pouches with shaving cream. We squished them until they changed colors.  Each time we added another color, we mushed and squished until the cream became another color.  It was zany!

See you next week with numbers 1 and 2!
MISSION

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK COMING MAY 15 - 22

Many families today are facing crisis. Beginning on Sunday evening, May 15 and continuing all week until the next Sunday morning, families currently in need will be arriving here at PPPC for overnight housing. They will be arriving as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) program. Up to 15 people may be arriving.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network creates a vital safety net for such families in churches and synagogues all over Ocean County. All client families include at least one child. Were it not for IHN, the County's Board of Social Services would have no choice but to house them in motel rooms - which, in the long term, are not optimal settings for children's healthy development.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of IHN. Beyond providing meals, staying overnight and other services essential to the program, volunteers offer compassionate assistance. So many of you have continuously volunteered over the years. You do simple but immeasurable things. You talk to the guest...and listen. You have responded to them with much compassion. To some, you have been their source of hope.  The video below is a great perspective on volunteering as well as the guest perspective.

Talking with guest and volunteers
Talking with guest and volunteers
We have several opportunities to volunteer but are always in need of overnight hosts especially. What do I need to do as an IHN volunteer? There are three types of volunteers needed to welcome our families each night:

1. A Meal Provider - Dinner hosts arrive by 5:00 p.m. and leave by 7:00 p.m. Prior to your night of cooking, you will be notified as to the number of adults and children needing dinner, as well as any special diet concerns. A simple meal is often best.

2. Hospitality Hosts arrive at 7:00 p.m and leave by 9:00 p.m. Hosts visit with our guests as they enjoy it and even play a game with some of the kids.

3. An Overnight Host - You have to be good at one thing to do this job: sleeping. Well, it's a little more than that, because you'll be staying in the building as a contact person, in case any of the families experiences an emergency. You arrive by 9:00 p.m. when things are usually pretty quiet. A comfy bunk bed or cot downstairs is provided as well as a continental breakfast. You'll be finished and on your way by 7:00 am.

Could the Lord be calling you to give of yourself in this way? If you feel that little nudge from the Lord, then please call or speak with Dorothy Tolley (732-892-9306), and let her know you would be glad to help. Sign up sheets are now in the Narthex.
The Story of An Amazing Woman

Compassionate hands The Volunteer Village housed groups during the weeks of April 10 and April 17.  Both groups were divided into two work groups, one working in Ocean County and the other working in Monmouth County.  The group that worked in Monmouth County hung sheet rock in the home of a woman I will call Anna.  One night during the second week, the volunteer group invited Anna, Henry, and myself to a dinner they hosted in the annex.

As we shared a meal,  Anna told us her story.  Anna doesn't live near any water, but her home received roof damage caused by wind followed by water damage during Sandy.  Because she and her husband lived a good distance away from the major storm-ravaged areas, she didn't hear about mold.  The couple patched their roof and went back to work.  Shortly afterwards, her husband was diagnosed with cancer and eight months later, his earthly days were over.  Anna continued to live in the house and work full time as a counselor to her drug abuse clients.  As time passed, her health began to fail.  She started making the rounds from doctor to doctor to find out just what was wrong.  One doctor told her she was  just depressed.  She knew that wasn't the case and refused the narcotic medicine that was prescribed for her.  Finally, she ended up in the office of an allergist.  After some tests, she learned she was allergic to several types of mold.  One Sunday, she related the story to a church friend.  The friend sent a contractor to her home.  Once the contractor entered her home he told her that her house was loaded with mold.  She had a professional come out and do tests and the worst was confirmed.

Anna was told she would have to leave her home and all her possessions.  Although she has four grown children, none live close enough to provide shelter for her.  So, like so many other Sandy victims, she moved into a motel.  She started the long process of filling out forms, looking for help,  etc. This whole time, her health was still failing and she had to reduce her work load to part time.
Her church pastor was her greatest source of support.  She said there were many times she just wanted to abandon her house and start over.  He encouraged her to keep going.  She has lived in three different motels and is now in an apartment.  She has spent all of her savings including her 401K.  But, with the help of so many volunteers, she hopes to be back in her home around July 4.

When she related her story, she sounded weary, but not bitter.  She is thankful that through it all she never had to sleep in her car and never missed a meal, although sometimes her dinner was a piece of bread.  She thanks God for the strength he has given her.  As a result, she has started a group at her church for others in similar situations as a way to "pay it forward".

When you hear hear such a story, you can't help but be thankful that  through the Volunteer Village, Point Pleasant Presbyterian was able to provide Anna with some of the help she needed.
