New Adult Study on Prayer

Coming soon, a new adult study which asks, "Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Would you like to grow in this area of your spiritual life?" Consider joining with others to be part of a class called Pray, Eat, Grow. We will be using the book The Workbook of Living Prayer by Maxie Dunnam. This is a 20th anniversary updated version of a book that has sold over 500,000 copies and changed countless lives.

It is a 7 week study which uses a workbook format. A time commitment of 20-30 minutes a day will be needed outside of the weekly class. There is a daily reading which provides guidance in your individual prayer journey. We will share our insights, our
growing edges and learning as we gather for our weekly group journey.

The class will meet on Mondays beginning May 2nd. The first class will be for an hour and the next 6 classes will run from 10:30 to noonish. Since the last study group enjoyed having a meal together each week, we will build that into our class. This is the EAT part of the Pray, Eat, Grow.

The cost of the book is $10. If you have questions about the class please see Linda Chase. There is a sign up in the church narthex or call the church office. Books need to be ordered soon.

Session Highlights
At their meeting on April 19, 2016, the Session took the following actions:

1. Heard a report on the formation of a new Generosity Team, to encourage generosity in every aspect of life.

2. Scheduled a congregational meeting for Sunday, June 5 at 11:00 am, to act on a report from the Nominating Committee with respect to the election of church officers.

3. Made plans for the ordination of Rebecca Crate on Sunday, May 22 at 3:00 pm, in the Sanctuary (Becca has received a call to become pastor of the Springfield Presbyterian Church in Sykesville, Maryland).

4. Made plans for hosting the next meeting of Monmouth Presbytery on Saturday, May 21 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

5. Heard a report from the Pastor on a visit by three members of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Response Team, who commended our church for our long-term commitment to hosting Sandy recovery volunteers from across the country.

6. Learned of plans for Vacation Bible School, on several evenings during the week of July 18-22, to be led by Christina Parrott and Kelly Iadarola. The theme is "Crocodile Dock."

7. Authorized an upgrade to the fire alarm system in the Education Annex (replacing obsolete components of the system).

8. Learned that the Session's minutes for 2015 were approved by Monmouth Presbytery without exception.

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK COMING MAY 15 - 22

Many families today are facing crisis. Beginning on Sunday evening, May 15 and continuing all week until the next Sunday morning, families currently in need will be arriving here at PPPC for overnight housing. They will be arriving as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) program. Up to 15 people may be arriving.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network creates a vital safety net for such families in churches and synagogues all over Ocean County. All client families include at least one child. Were it not for IHN, the County's Board of Social Services would have no choice but to house them in motel rooms - which, in the long term, are not optimal settings for children's healthy development.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of IHN. Beyond providing meals, staying overnight and other services essential to the program, volunteers offer compassionate assistance. So many of you have continuously volunteered over the years. You do simple but immeasurable things. You talk to the guest...and listen. You have responded to them with much compassion. To some, you have been their source of hope.  The video below is a great perspective on volunteering as well as the guest perspective.

Talking with guest and volunteers
Talking with guest and volunteers
We have several opportunities to volunteer but are always in need of overnight hosts especially. What do I need to do as an IHN volunteer? There are three types of volunteers needed to welcome our families each night:

1. A Meal Provider - Dinner hosts arrive by 5:00 p.m. and leave by 7:00 p.m. Prior to your night of cooking, you will be notified as to the number of adults and children needing dinner, as well as any special diet concerns. A simple meal is often best.

2. Hospitality Hosts arrive at 7:00 p.m and leave by 9:00 p.m. Hosts visit with our guests as they enjoy it and even play a game with some of the kids.

3. An Overnight Host - You have to be good at one thing to do this job: sleeping. Well, it's a little more than that, because you'll be staying in the building as a contact person, in case any of the families experiences an emergency. You arrive by 9:00 p.m. when things are usually pretty quiet. A comfy bunk bed or cot downstairs is provided as well as a continental breakfast. You'll be finished and on your way by 7:00 am.

Could the Lord be calling you to give of yourself in this way? If you feel that little nudge from the Lord, then please call or speak with Dorothy Tolley (732-892-9306), and let her know you would be glad to help. Sign up sheets are now in the Narthex.

(2) Through our Give-By-Text option.
You'll find that electronic giving is secure, fast and easy to use. Thank you for all you do to support our mission throughout the year!
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School News

Hello everyone!

I hope this week went well for you, and I hope you all got to spend some time outside to enjoy this glorious weather!

Last week, we wrapped up our unit on the Beatitudes. It worked out that there were students present last week who had not been able to attend Sunday School the week before. After listening to Pastor Linda's discussion of the blessing cups that were made during their absence, they were very enthusiastic about making one themselves. So, we changed plans and the children who missed the previous week made their own blessing cups, while the other children helped them and then worked on other projects. I believe we reached our goal of truly having an understanding of what Jesus was saying during his Sermon on the Mount. We talked, in detail, about the types of actions, behaviors, and values we believe God wants us to exemplify, and the type of humans God wants us to be. We acknowledged that it is impossible to be that person all the time, and we gave thanks to Christ for His sacrifice and forgiveness for when we aren't living up to those standards.

This week, we will be starting our unit on Moses. Some of our favorite and most well known Bible stories involve Moses. For our first week, we will be focusing on The Ten Commandments. What are they? Why are they important? Are they still relevant? All of these questions, and more, will be answered this weekend!

See you on Sunday.

Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers

Y is for Yoga!  A mother of one of our students is a yoga instructor.  She came in for Student of the Week and taught us all relaxation and stretching exercises.  It was ohm-azing!

This week we learned sign language for "yes" and "you."  We made yarn art and yellow collages.  We read "Yes Day" and "Yay!"  We also read "Michael Recycle" and talked about Earth Day and how we can help take care of our planet.  See you next week with letter Z!
MISSION

Presbyterian Mission Agency

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea."-Psalm 46:1-2

Over the past week, the earth has shaken. On Saturday night the coast of Ecuador was rocked by an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. This came on the heels of two separate earthquakes in Japan, the first measuring 6.2 on the scale; the second, 7.0.

As aftershocks continue to threaten, more than 500 lives have already been lost. Thousands of other people have been injured, and communities lie in ruins.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is working in collaboration with our partner the ACT (Action by Churches Together) Alliance to respond to this crisis, providing support to those suffering in the aftermath. As our immediate response takes shape, PDA is also preparing for long-term support for both Ecuador and Japan. Long after the initial wave of relief recedes, PDA will remain to accompany the people of Ecuador and Japan as they rebuild their lives, walking the road out of this chaos with hope.

The needs for the response are great. God's people are once again called on to stand in the GAP (Give/Act/Pray) to help survivors.

Donate now. Learn more: Get the PDA situation report.

Give: Share your financial blessings by designating gifts to DR999999-Disaster Relief-International Disasters and Emergencies. Gifts can be made online, by calling (800) 872-3283, or by mailing a check to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700. You can also text PDA to 20222 to donate $25.

Act: Stay informed: Subscribe to receive PDA Rapid Information Network emails to keep aware of current responses and urgent needs that you can share with your congregation, and like us on Facebook.

Pray: Please pray for those who suffered loss of loved ones and for those who are working tirelessly to provide rescue, humanitarian aid, and spiritual and psychological support.
