Weekly News For
Sunday, March 6, 2016
Dear Friends,

Wandering. Aimless. Hungry. Thirsty. Doubting. Fearful. All these words and more describe the plight of the Israelites in the wilderness, trapped halfway between slavery and freedom.

The Lord had been faithful to them: not only leading them to freedom from Pharaoh's armies, but accompanying them as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. When their water-skins ran dry, the Lord showed Moses how to strike a rock with his staff, breaking it open to reveal a burbling spring.

But still the people doubted. Still they were afraid. Where would their next meal come from?

The Lord opened the heavens and manna rained down. The heavenly food deliveries continued until the children of Abraham reached the promised land. This week's scripture lesson from Joshua 5 tells of how, on the very day their first harvest came in, the manna ceased.

Veterans of the Christian life attest to the truth of this pattern. Even in hard times, the Lord gives us just what we need. These are our manna moments. We do well to remember them and to celebrate God's constancy.

There's a theological word for this: providence. The Lord provides. Both in life and in worship, as we gather around the Communion Table.

Join us at the Table this Sunday, for a manna moment!

Dr. Wilton's New Book

Pastor Carl's new book, Principles of Presbyterian Polity, has just been published by Westminster/John Knox Press!

Autographed copies may be purchased from the church office for a discounted price of $15.

The word "polity" means government - so, Presbyterian polity is Presbyterian church government.

From the publisher's description:

"Pastors, church leaders, and students of Presbyterian polity will find this a useful guide to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) governance based on foundational principles. Recent changes in the PC(USA) Constitution have meant fewer rules and more flexibility in governance, making it imperative that leaders understand the historical principles that guide the church. Wilton explains the Book of Order's historic principles of church order in accessible language, providing readers with a lively appreciation of the revolutionary principles that guided the Presbyterian experiment in the New World and are still the beating heart of church life today. Principles of Presbyterian Polity is written from the conviction that it is not enough merely to know the "what" of polity; a deep, intuitive understanding of the "why" is just as vital. Church leaders will come away with a greater understanding of the Book of Order and have confidence using it in practical situations."

You can read excerpts from the book on the Amazon.com website.)
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School News

We had a great day last Sunday.  We talked about when Jesus was carrying his cross and he fell.  We discussed what it means to fall and how important it is to get back up when we do.  We also talked about what it feels like to fall - both physically and emotionally. We talked about how Jesus might have felt, and how we would feel if we were in his position.  We unanimously agreed we could never do what Jesus did, especially not without anger and resentment towards our accusers.  For our craft we made a hand-print out of sand glued to paper to remind us of the strength and love of Jesus Christ, even when we fell.  We also included a prayer to remind us to ask God for help:

O compassionate God, you are with us when we stumble and when we fall.  Give us strength and courage to get up again and keep trying.  Help us remember you are always with us.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

This week, we will talk about the ways Jesus was comforted.  This builds on our discussion last week of the range of emotions Jesus may have felt, or at least the emotions we would have felt- had we been in Jesus' position.  This will definitely be a more positively focused lesson, so I encourage everyone to make the extra effort to make it in!

Peace and Blessings

POINT BEACH PREP

This Week at Point Beach Prep

This week we met Miss S!  Our Pre-K sight word was "sit."  Our sign language words were "shark" and "snake."  At our project table we made lots of crafts including shamrocks, snakes, and spin art.  We also wrote our own stories about what we would do if we caught a leprechaun!

We began Show and Tell and saw Snow White, Spiderman, sharks, and even a real WWII soldier's helmet.
We celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with a visit from the Cat in the Hat!  We read Dr. Seuss books for Read Across America Day.  We are proud to say we read EVERY day at Point Beach Prep, as story time is part of our daily routine!

What a SUPER week!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Great News About the PW Cookbook!

"SHORE DELIGHTS OF JERSEY" is in its final creative stage. We have received an initial proof and have made some adjustments. We are extremely happy with the outcome and think that you will be also.

Even with the high quality of the book, the production  costs have been kept low. We expect to offer the book at a reasonable price.  The money will be funding our own nursery staff and missions.  In Sunday's bulletin we are taking a survey to see how many books we should have printed.

Please take the time to submit how many books you think you would purchase. This is a great hostess gift, birthday surprise, or for the holidays.

Please return the survey in the bulletin by putting it in the collection plate, dropping it off at the church office, or e-mail your response to ptpresbypwcookbook@gmail.com

Thank you so much for your input.
