Weekly News For
Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016
Dear Friends,

First of all, on behalf of our entire family let me say "Thank you" for all the expressions of love and concern, and for all the prayers, at the recent death of my mother, Shirley MacKenzie Wilton. The cards, the memorial gifts, the expressions of concern, the hot meals, and most of all, the presence of so many of you at the visiting hours and at last Saturday's memorial service meant more than words can say.

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease more than ten years ago. That led to her move back up to New Jersey from North Carolina, so she would have family members nearby to accompany her on her long journey through that debilitating illness. This church community meant a great deal to her, for as long as she was able to make sense of the worship services - and even after, as members of the Board of Deacons, the Elisabeth-Verdella Circle of PW, and other friends visited her at Harrogate, where she lived. Special thanks to her Harrogate neighbors, Ched and Ruth Church, who always looked out for her and often gave her rides to Sunday worship, and to Pastor Linda, who led the memorial service with sensitivity and grace.

"Blest be the ties that bind our hearts in Christian love," goes the old hymn. We have been comforted by those ties of love in recent months and years, and we thank you for it.

Now, on to Sunday!

Our sermon text comes from chapter 3 of Paul's letter to the Philippians: "...their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior..."

There are so many experiences in life that conspire to fix our minds on "earthly things." It's so easy to stumble through our days, looking down at the ground, never regarding the majesty of the heavens.

Amidst the daily struggle of living, learning and getting along with others, it takes a conscious effort to pause, to look up, to aspire to the higher way of living set out for us in the scriptures.

Once it was common, in schools and other institutions of society, to speak of cultivating virtues. Being a virtuous person was an admired goal, something to aspire to. There's a good deal of moral relativism out there these days, so the old language about virtues isn't so intelligible to many people. Here in the church, though, we don't need to apologize for it. We still aim high, striving to live up to the example of Jesus Christ.

There's a place for you in worship this Sunday. Together, let us aim high!

Pastor Carl

Last Sunday, Pastor Linda provided a Prayer a Day during Lent.  A second week of prayers can be found as a bulletin insert or can be downloaded.

A New Heart for Jacob

Jacob Basilotto is a 15-year old high-school freshman at Brick Township High School, and a Scout in our own Troop 6.  Although he was born with just half a heart, over the years he has proven that he has more heart than most.  Jacob was born with a congenital heart defect known as HLHS (Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome).  Since December 10, 2015 Jacob has been on the waiting list for a heart transplant as 1A status, which is considered the most urgent.

On Saturday, March 12th in the Church Annex, "A New Heart for Jacob" - a fundraiser to benefit the Basilotto family - will take place.  All monies raised will support the upcoming expenses associated with Jacob's heart transplant.  Some expenses include additional travel costs to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, transplant surgery, extended hospital stays and visits, medication costs and medical/hospital bills.  Please consider supporting them in their efforts.

To make a donation in the form of a gift certificate, merchandise or a monetary gift to be used to raise money in support of the upcoming expenses associated with Jacob's heart transplant, please call the church for more information.
Dr. Wilton's New Book

Pastor Carl's new book, Principles of Presbyterian Polity, has just been published by Westminster/John Knox Press!

The word "polity" means government - so, Presbyterian polity is Presbyterian church government.

The book is intended as a textbook for seminary polity classes - such as the ones Pastor Carl teaches at New Brunswick and Princeton Theological Seminaries - but there's much in it that's of interest to ruling elders, deacons, or anyone else who wants to know more about how Presbyterian congregations are governed.

From the publisher's description:

"Pastors, church leaders, and students of Presbyterian polity will find this a useful guide to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) governance based on foundational principles. Recent changes in the PC(USA) Constitution have meant fewer rules and more flexibility in governance, making it imperative that leaders understand the historical principles that guide the church. Wilton explains the Book of Order's historic principles of church order in accessible language, providing readers with a lively appreciation of the revolutionary principles that guided the Presbyterian experiment in the New World and are still the beating heart of church life today. Principles of Presbyterian Polity is written from the conviction that it is not enough merely to know the "what" of polity; a deep, intuitive understanding of the "why" is just as vital. Church leaders will come away with a greater understanding of the Book of Order and have confidence using it in practical situations."

For a limited time, the book is ON SALE, 35% OFF, at the PCUSA Store website for $13 (regular price is $20) - which is cheaper than Amazon.com. (You can read excerpts from the book on the Amazon website.) There will soon be an opportunity to order the book through the church office (also at a discounted price), and perhaps even  a book-signing event after church on an upcoming Sunday. Watch this space for more details...
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School Update

Palm on purple background Lent is upon us! Over the next few weeks, we will be exploring Lent and the events leading up to the Crucifixion and then the Resurrection. This can be a sensitive topic for some kids because there are a lot of dark things happening.

However, the focus of the lessons will be a positive one, and the fact that all of this was done because Jesus loves us will be highlighted throughout our lessons. This week we will be talking about crucifixion and why Jesus was set to be crucified. We will also be talking about the people who stayed loyal to Jesus and helped him during this time.

See you this Sunday!

Peace and Blessings
