POINT BEACH PREP
OPEN HOUSE THIS SATURDAY
10:00 A.M TO 12:00 P.M.
(See below for more information)

Dear Friends,

It looked like an auspicious start for the young preacher, a son of that congregation. There he stood at the lectern, fresh-faced and enthusiastic. His listeners waited with anticipation for his words.

He surprised them all.

He read from the prophet Isaiah:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

Then he sat down. Bam! End of sermon.

The  congregation was not amused.

In fact, they were outraged. They ran him out of town.

The preacher, by the way, was Jesus.

Why did those words outrage the people so? Come to worship this Sunday, to get the back-story behind this first-century scandal!

Coins - noisy offering Noisy Offering

We all have some--in a jar on the dresser, in a desk drawer, in the car, maybe even in the cushions of the couch. Loose change accumulates in various locations of our household. Those humble coins can help feed someone. This Sunday, we'll collect the Noisy Offering that - through Monmouth Presbytery's Cents-Ability appeal - supports ministries to relieve hunger locally, regionally, and globally.

Prayerfully Consider

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."  Philippians 4:6

The Prayer Family for the week of January 31 is the Stout family. Let us be prayerfully aware of Henry and Nancy, as well as all our members and friends.

Presbyterian Women's Fundraiser

The Women's Bean Project sales before Christmas were great and PW thanks you all for your support! We have covered our purchase and shipping charges and are now working on earning the profits that will help pay for our nursery personnel.

We still have an assortment of items available that would make great additions to any Super Bowl party or home baked Valentine dessert! They are also a great way to say "thank you", either pre-baked or in its colorful bag, to show your appreciation to someone special.

Please call or stop in the office if you are interested in purchasing any items.  Food items can be purchased to donate to the Youth Connection's Souper Bowl of Caring being held next week.

Your support not only helps your own church, but impoverished and unemployed women who depend on programs like the Women's Bean Project which provides jobs and life skills for those who would otherwise have a difficult time. This allows them to support their families and be contributing members to their local communities.

Here is their mission statement and you can be a part of it:
The mission of Women's Bean Project is to change women's lives
by providing stepping stones to self-sufficiency through social enterprise.

This Week at Point Beach Prep

This week we began our Student of the week program.  Each child has an opportunity to have Mom, Dad, or a special person come in to join the class and do an activity of their choice.  The children get to take home Brown Bear (our class stuffed bear) and journal about his adventures.  They also bring in an All About Me poster to get hung in the classroom.  This week our Nursery Student of the Week brought in his Dad, Mom and 4 sisters.  His father brought his guitar and everyone sang and danced to lots of fun songs!  Our Pre-K Student of the Week brought in her Mom to read a book about Olaf and make an Olaf project.  Then they made a "blizzard in a jar"  which had "mystical powers to make it snow."  Would you believe it snowed later that morning?  What a fun week!

YOUTH CONNECTION

Souper Bowl of Caring

On February 7th, our Youth Connection will be joining other youth around the country to make a difference. On February 7, please bring a food (canned or box) for our food pantry and /or make a donation in one of the soup pots they'll be holding at the doors as you leave worship. Last year our youth collected $375.68 in cash as well as food items that was given to St. Gregory's Pantry. This offering reminds us that a little gift given in faith can become more than we could ever imagine.

                                         MISSION

Concert for Syrian Refugee Aid this Saturday, Feb. 6th

Come out to the church Sanctuary this Saturday, February 6th at 3:00 pm for a wonderful concert by local musicians. The concert is being organized by April Centrone, a local musician and alumna of Point Pleasant Beach High School, to aid Syrian refugee families stranded in the tiny Issa El Sheikh camp in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, about 20 miles east of Beirut.

April has been living in Lebanon for the past 3 years and has been engaged, with an ad hoc group of friends and associates, in bringing aid to the refugees in Issa El Sheikh. Most urgently needed is fuel to provide heat for the tiny, drafty tents the refugees are living in (and yes, it does get very cold in Lebanon's mountains, where the camp is located).

This is a direct, people-to-people outreach. Funds raised will be used directly to purchase fuel and other necessities for the residents of the camp.

A short video will be shown at the concert, to share more about Solidarity Through Humanity, the organization April works with that is extending this much-needed help.

There is a $10 donation to attend the concert. Come along and enjoy some wonderful folk, jazz, pop and blues music, and make a real difference in the lives of families who have suffered the loss of everything.
