Friends, There's an old joke about a prominent Presbyterian who ends his life on earth and - of course - arrives in heaven. He looks up and sees Jesus himself seated at God's right hand. To his astonishment, Jesus gets up from his throne, descends from the dais and walks up to him, his right hand extended in greeting. "Ah, Mr. Presbyterian," says the Lord. "Welcome to heaven." Nodding in the direction of the Almighty, Jesus says, "You already know my Father, but I don't believe you have met my Mother." The joke gently pokes fun at the often-ambiguous relationship we Protestants have with Mary, the mother of our Lord. We want to honor her as one of the most important women in the New Testament and a spiritual example to us all. But, we're also a bit uncomfortable - for good theological reasons - with the unabashed veneration of Mary in some other churches. The Reformers Luther and Calvin both thought the adoration of Mary was overdone in their time, so they ratcheted it way back. The result is that Mary is often neglected in the life of Protestant churches. That won't be the case this Sunday. Our text is the story of the Visitation from Luke: how the young Mary - who's just learned from the angel Gabriel she's carrying the son of God in her womb - visits her cousin Elizabeth. Her cousin is likewise expecting a baby, who will grow up to become John the Baptist. Mary may have been a young teenager, but she was mighty in the faith. She takes this earth-shaking revelation in stride. Mary tells Gabriel, "Let it be with me according to your word." And then she does what expectant women the world over have always done: she seeks out a fellow mother, that they may support and encourage each other during their pregnancies. Mary might have responded to Gabriel's announcement by asking, "Why me?" But she doesn't. As Luke tells the story, there's never a question in her mind about God's choice of her to fulfill this very special role. Mary's response is more like, "Why NOT me?" That, indeed, is a response you and I ought to consider making, when we feel that stirring in our hearts that suggests maybe there's something special God wants us to do.

Christmas Eve Worship Schedule
Thursday, December 24th
4:00 Service for Families with Young Children - The Dove Choir will sing, and kids from the Sunday School will present their Christmas pageant telling the story of Jesus' birth. There are plenty of walk-on roles for the pageant as well - so, even if kids weren't able to attend the rehearsals, or if they've just arrived here from out of town, they can pick up a shepherd, angel or sheep costume from one of the Sunday School teachers in the Chittick Lounge, and come forward to Bethlehem when their group is called.
7:00 Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols, with Special Music - We have a wonderful array of musicians offering their talents either as soloists or in small ensembles for this service, that includes the familiar Christmas scripture passages and a chance to both sing and listen to well-loved carols. Dr. Wilton will preach on
"FEAR NOT, SAY THE ANGELS." Soloists include Morgan Sarbello (flute), Chelsea Pula (violin), vocal soloists Olivia Youngman, Kevin Jasaitis and Jon Yount, as well as Keith Reilly and Samantha Boryeskne playing the saxophone. We'll end by holding candles as we all sing "Silent Night" together. Sara Hoey will provide organ accompaniment. 11:00 Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols, with the Chancel Choir - This service is similar to the 7:00 service, but with the Chancel Choir, under the direction of William R. Shoppell, Jr., presenting a variety of stirring and meaningful Christmas anthems. Dr. Wilton will preach on "FEAR NOT, SAY THE ANGELS." Sara Hoey will accompany on the organ as we all hold candles and sing "Silent Night" together. Departing the Sanctuary at midnight, we'll truly know Christmas is here!

Community Christmas Dinner
Celebrate Christmas Day through the joy of serving others! Our free Community Christmas Dinner - 12 noon to 2:00 pm in the CE Annex - is for anyone with no place else to go on the big day who would enjoy an old-fashioned holiday feast with congenial company. We need:

Even an hour is a big help - and, once you're here, you'll want to stay and celebrate the JOY!

Women's Bean Project In the North Hall
This Sunday, as well as the remainder of December, the PW will once again be selling prepackaged soups, dips, cookie mix and cornbread mix from the Women's Bean Project. In addition, we have three new items: salsa mix, chocolate covered espresso beans and for your favorite pooch, chicken-and-cheese dog biscuits!
The Women's Bean project employs chronically impoverished and unemployed women through a transitional job in gourmet food and handcrafted jewelry manufacturing so they are able to receive immediate income.
These make great holiday gifts and stocking-stuffers as well as items you can serve yourself. Look for our display in the North Hall.

JOAN VALENTINE HOUSE GIVING TREE
Once again this year, we'll be collecting gifts for our neighbors at the Joan Valentine House, to make their Christmas a little brighter. The Valentine House is a non-profit residential home for adults living with mental illness.
Look for the Giving Tree in the Narthex this Sunday; it will include envelopes with the names of Valentine House residents, and what gifts they've asked for. There are still 10 names left.
IMPORTANT: Please don't just take an envelope, but also write your name on the clipboard that's near the tree, so we know which person you'll be shopping for.
Although some of the lists may contain quite a number of items, please choose no more than TWO items from the list to purchase. This is important to preserve a sense of equality among all the residents. Please stick to a $25 cap on presents.
Please bring your wrapped gifts into the Sanctuary no later than Christmas Eve, and place them under the Christmas Tree, with a gift tag indicating who the gift is for. Gifts will be handed out at an Epiphany Party early in January. Thank you for bringing some extra Christmas cheer into someone's life!

New Offering Envelopes
2016 offering envelope boxes may be picked up in the Narthex. If you cannot find your envelopes, please write your name on the pad provided. Using your numbered envelopes makes the counters' jobs easier and ensures proper contribution credit. Thank you for helping us by using them! 2016 envelopes should be used beginning Sunday, January 3rd. Your assigned envelope number may have changed.
In order to be recorded this year, all 2015 giving must be in the church office by December 31. Please avoid putting 2015 donations in 2016 envelopes. (If you don't have a 2015 envelope, you can use a generic pew envelope and write "2015 giving" on it.) You can also call the church's Financial Secretary, Donna Ferry, in the church office with any questions.

Hello everyone!
Last week, we had our annual Sunday School Pajama Party and watched the Polar Express. We also got to enjoy some yummy cookies and hot chocolate while we watched. We had such a blast!
This week, we will be working hard on the Christmas Pageant. We will be practicing our lines and songs during Sunday School, and then we will be doing a full dress rehearsal, in the Sanctuary following the service, so we can be ready for Thursday. Ms. Becky and I ask that you please try your hardest to make it to this as we will be handing out costumes as well as making sure we all know where to stand and what not.
See you on Sunday
Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers

We have been practicing singing our Christmas carols for our family Sing-a-longs next week. We have also been busy making presents for parents. The children are looking forward to our Christmas parties!
We enjoyed another visit from the Point Pleasant Beach Children's Librarian. She read stories, encouraged children's help with a felt board, and sang songs with us. Thank you to Ms. Tina from the little red library!

THANKS!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the volunteers who helped out with St. Gregory Pantry's annual toy distribution! We had so many people from PPPC who stepped up to the plate to make sure the toy distribution went smoothly, which it did. It was wonderful to see youth and adults all working together to help those who are struggling to just get by. Each family who came through the toy line was able to select toys for their own children, as well as pick out clothing, hand-made hats, scarves and mittens. There were piles of stocking-stuffers and gift cards available for those with older children. Thank you as well to all who donated gifts to the pantry. Your combined efforts helped to make sure many people have a blessed Christmas! |
