Friends, George Frideric Handel's oratorio, Messiah, is one of the best-loved musical compositions of all time. This Sunday in worship, the Chancel Choir, under the direction of William R. Shoppell, Jr., will present Part 1 of Messiah - better known as the Christmas portion - as well as the famed Hallelujah Chorus. The choir will be accompanied by organist Sara B. Hoey as well as a string quartet. Although Messiah was written to be enjoyed as a single work, the first portion - dealing with the advent and birth of Jesus - is often performed in the season of Advent. Handel wrote the music for Messiah in 1741 in an incredible surge of creativity: he completed the work in just 24 days. We don't know the reason for his rapid work - some have suggested he was urgently in need of money, and others that he was simply carried away by the majesty and wonder of the scriptures. A legend often told about the work's composition, that may or may not be true, is that Handel's servant walked into the room as his employer had just finished writing the Hallelujah Chorus. He noticed the composer had tears streaming down his cheeks. Handel turned to him and said, "I think I did see all heaven before me, and the great God himself!" Whatever the case, countless listeners have experienced a similar thrill of awe as they have heard choir members and soloists sing those immortal words. The words to Messiah all come from scripture. The scripture texts were selected and assembled by Charles Jennens, a wealthy English landowner and patron of the arts. Jennens may have had a way with words, but he was obviously not much of a musician, because he was unimpressed by Handel's work. After hearing the piece performed, he wrote to a friend: "His Messiah has disappointed me, being set in great haste, tho' he said he would be about a year about it, and make it the best of all his Compositions. I shall put no more Sacred Works into his hands, to be thus abus'd..."
We know differently. Come to worship this Sunday and enjoy this great musical treasure as part of your pre-Christmas celebrations!

Women's Bean Project In the North Hall
This Sunday, as well as the remainder of December, the PW will once again be selling prepackaged soups, dips, cookie mix and cornbread mix from the Women's Bean Project. In addition, we have three new items: salsa mix, chocolate covered espresso beans and for your favorite pooch, chicken-and-cheese dog biscuits!
The Women's Bean project employs chronically impoverished and unemployed women through a transitional job in gourmet food and handcrafted jewelry manufacturing so they are able to receive immediate income.
These make great holiday gifts and stocking-stuffers as well as items you can serve yourself. Look for our display in the North Hall.

New Offering Envelopes
2016 offering envelope boxes may be picked up in the Narthex starting this Sunday. If you cannot find your envelopes, please write your name on the pad provided. Using your numbered envelopes makes the counters jobs easier and ensures proper contribution credit. Thank you for helping us by using them. 2016 envelopes should be used beginning Sunday, January 3rd. Your assigned envelope number may have changed.
All 2015 giving must be in the church office by December 31. Please avoid putting 2015 donations in 2016 envelopes. (If you don't have a 2015 envelope, you can use a generic pew envelope and write "2015 giving" on it.) You can also call the church's Financial Secretary, Donna Ferry, in the church office with any questions.

JOAN VALENTINE HOUSE GIVING TREE
Once again this year, we'll be collecting gifts for our neighbors at the Joan Valentine House, to make their Christmas a little brighter. The Valentine House is a non-profit residential home for adults living with mental illness.
Look for the Giving Tree in the Narthex this Sunday; it will include envelopes with the names of Valentine House residents, and what gifts they've asked for. There are 12 names left.
IMPORTANT: Please don't just take an envelope, but also write your name on the clipboard that's near the tree, so we know which person you'll be shopping for.
Although some of the lists may contain quite a number of items, please choose no more than TWO items from the list to purchase. This is important to preserve a sense of equality among all the residents. Please stick to a $25 cap on presents.
Please bring your wrapped gifts into the Sanctuary no later than Christmas Eve, and place them under the Christmas Tree, with a gift tag indicating who the gift is for. Gifts will be handed out at an Epiphany Party early in January. Thank you for bringing some extra Christmas cheer into someone's life!

Once the quantity of flowers needed for sanctuary decorations has been reached, additional gifts will be used for purchase of sanctuary paraments and banners.
Deadline:
December 13, 2015.

St. Gregory's Pantry Christmas Distribution This Week
Thank you to everyone who has offered to volunteer for the St. Gregory's Toy Setup and Distribution. Setup will be December 14 and 15th in the Annex between the hours of 9:00 and 3:00 p.m.
We are still in need of volunteers on December 16th for the distribution. We need one volunteer to be in our Church sanctuary from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m and two volunteers between the hours of 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. These volunteers are needed to assist and pass out numbers to the clients who are waiting to be called to come over to the Annex. A few people are also needed to staff the kitchen in the annex. Making coffee as well as putting out food for volunteers is needed. Hours are 8:30 am to after lunch.
Anyone available to help on December 17th with Annex Cleanup beginning at 9:00 am and continuing until completion would also be appreciated. Thank you for taking time out of your busy week to make this year's distribution a success.
Please speak to or email Linda Chase if you are able to help.
NOTE: If you wanted to donate to the toyland, please bring any new unwrapped toys - clearly marked for St. Gregory's - to church by this Sunday. |

Hello everyone!
We had such a great week last week in Sunday School! For the first half, we watched A Charlie Brown Christmas, and discussed the true meaning of Christmas. For the second half, Ms. Becky joined us and talked to everyone about the Christmas Pageant. We are so excited for the show this year. I think it's going to be the best one yet!
This week, while the Chancel Choir is performing highlights from the Messiah, we will be having a movie day at Sunday School. I am asking all of the parents to please bring your children to the Sunday School by 9:45. We will be watching The Polar Express and enjoying hot chocolate and treats. We are encouraging the kids to come in pajamas, because movies and hot chocolate are so much more enjoyable when you're in pj's!
See you on Sunday Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
