Weekly News For
Sunday, Nov 29, 2015
Friends,

It's always a bit jarring in those years when Advent steals upon us before we're even out of November. "Where has the time gone?", many of us are asking ourselves. "We still have leftover turkey in the fridge!"

Advent is always that way: Christ's coming breaks into the familiar world as we know it. It was that way a couple millennia ago, when the news that Mary was expecting a child came suddenly, casting their lives of Joseph and herself into holy turmoil. Surely it will be that way at the end of time, as Jesus returns.

"For there will be great distress on the earth," Jesus predicts. The very "powers of the heavens will be shaken" (Luke 21:23, 26).

There are two ways of expecting something to happen. The first is when we know exactly what to expect. That's the way we like it, generally. No surprises.

But then there's another type of expectancy: waiting for something, we know not what. When expectancy is married to uncertainty, our lives are seasoned with both joy and foreboding.

Yet isn't that our reality, more often than not? Significant portions of our future are swathed in mystery. And mystery doesn't always sit well with us.

The season of Advent embodies this dual meaning of expectancy. On the one hand, we expect the Christmas holiday. That, we know pretty well. As for all those biblical predictions of Christ's return, we're not so sure we're ready for that cosmic disruption, that scattering of everything comfortable and familiar.

Who knows what the future holds? Whatever may happen, this we know for sure: our Lord has promised to be with us always.

This week in worship, we light the first Advent candle in hope and expectation.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN -  Thank you to everyone who has submitted estimates of giving through our We Have A Story stewardship campaign. To date, 62 estimate of giving cards have been received, for a total of $150,892.   If you have not yet had an opportunity to submit your card, cards can be found in the pews; or,you can download one online; or, you can send a confidential email to Donna Ferry, the church's financial secretary, at donna@pointpresbyterian.org.   Cards can be placed in the offering plate or can be mailed into the office. These cards and pledges are now needed for us to plan for our 2016 operating budget which will be formed by the Session in early January and reported at the congregation's Annual General Meeting.

CHRISTMAS CARD PROJECT - During December, EliSabeth-Verdella Circle will present two ways to send Christmas greetings to your
church family members. This annual project raises money for local mission. You may place cards for individuals in the box, to be sorted alphabetically for easy pick-up. The circle asks that you donate the money you would have spent on postage by placing it in the donation box on the table in the Narthex.

There will also be a decorated poster board in the Narthex for you to write a brief message to all your Church family and friends. If you choose this option, the circle would appreciate a small donation to their mission project, placed in the donation box on the table. The circle members thank you for your participation in their mission project, which is purchasing Christmas gifts for residents at Claremont Care Center.

                               SUNDAY SCHOOL

Hello everyone!

Last week was so much fun!  We decorated ornaments that will be put up on the Christmas tree in the sanctuary.  They came out so nice- the kids really did such a great job.  A very special thank you to Maria O'Connor for organizing the craft. Afterwards, we had our own version of a Thanksgiving feast.

This week is the first Sunday of Advent.  We will be starting our unit and learning all about the birth of Jesus.  I can't wait to see everyone. See you on Sunday!

Peace and Blessings,
