Friends,
Nobody likes to be laughed at. Not even Jesus.
In Mark 5:39, Jesus says of the young daughter of Jairus, whom he's been asked to heal, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping."
Then it happens. The crowd laughs at him.
What sort of deluded fool is this, they're thinking to themselves? Clearly the girl is dead. Jesus - preoccupied with healing the woman who touched the hem of his garment - arrived too late to help her.
But he wasn't too late. Jesus calls out to the girl to get up, and she does.
The laughter of the crowd is so typical of how many people receive the gospel - until they have a firsthand experience of God's power. These are fantastic tales: of a God who loves the world so much to be born into it, and of how God's son miraculously heals the sick and raises the dead. Such accounts seem to challenge the natural order.
One of the realities of being Jesus' disciples is that we're always just a little out of step with conventional wisdom. "You shall know the truth," wrote the Christian novelist Flannery O'Connor, "and the truth will make you odd."
There's another thing our faith teaches us, though: we have the last laugh.
Come to worship this Sunday, as we explore this marvelous story!
Pastor Carl

You can drop off your recipes at the church office, leave them in the offering plate or e-mail them to ptpresbypwcookbook@gmail.com.
