Friends,

Nobody likes to be laughed at. Not even Jesus.

In Mark 5:39, Jesus says of the young daughter of Jairus, whom he's been asked to heal, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping."

Then it happens. The crowd laughs at him.

What sort of deluded fool is this, they're thinking to themselves? Clearly the girl is dead. Jesus - preoccupied with healing the woman who touched the hem of his garment - arrived too late to help her.

But he wasn't too late. Jesus calls out to the girl to get up, and she does.

The laughter of the crowd is so typical of how many people receive the gospel - until they have a firsthand experience of God's power. These are fantastic tales: of a God who loves the world so much to be born into it, and of how God's son miraculously heals the sick and raises the dead. Such accounts seem to challenge the natural order.

One of the realities of being Jesus' disciples is that we're always just a little out of step with conventional wisdom. "You shall know the truth," wrote the Christian novelist Flannery O'Connor, "and the truth will make you odd."

There's another thing our faith teaches us, though: we have the last laugh.

Come to worship this Sunday, as we explore this marvelous story!

SUMMER GENEROSITY - Wherever you find yourself during these summer months, we hope you'll continue to remember the church in your financial giving, even if you aren't present each Sunday in worship. You may want to take advantage of our secure online giving option, which is a great way to maintain your regular giving even while you're away. You can even pre-plan automatic deductions from your bank account for whatever dates you specify. Thanks for being a good Christian steward, all year round!

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS - During the months of July and August the church office will be closing at noon on Fridays. Please have all bulletin information in by Thursday mornings.

COOKBOOK UPDATE - Seven recipes have "poured in". Don't miss the opportunity to be published in the PW Cookbook, from the heart of the Jersey Shore.  Don't be concerned if you can't come up with a Shore based title, some recipes are best left alone; we will be having each section of the cookbook have a Jersey Shore twist.  You can drop off your recipes at the church office, leave them in the offering plate or e-mail them to ptpresbypwcookbook@gmail.com. P.S. don't forget those "sand"wich recipes and don't forget your name.   Nancy and Karen

CONGRATULATIONS TO MORGAN DANIELS - Who graduated from Point Pleasant Borough High School.  Morgan's name was accidentally omitted from last week's recognition.
