Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church

Friends,
Well, don't be so sure. The story's taken on a lot of baggage over the centuries, as various preachers, teachers and theologians have tried to interpret its meaning for Christians. Lots of assumptions have arisen about what the story means, some of which have only the sketchiest connection with what the Bible actually says.
What is Adam and Eve's sin? What makes them think they can hide from God? Why does God want people to avoid the "tree of knowledge of good and evil"? Who's that pesky snake, anyway?
Join us this Sunday as we explore questions like these concerning this ancient text, so central to our faith. It's Choral Bells Recognition as well (rescheduled from an earlier date), so we'll enjoy some extra-special instrumental music. We'll also be celebrating wedding and church membership anniversaries.
It's going to be a great day!
Pastor Carl

Postponed from May 17, 2015 due to the illness of several bell-ringers, this Sunday we take time to recognize the Choral Bells. The ensemble will ring four numbers instead of their usual two. The first two selections, "Prayer" and "Reverbrations" were played in the annual Bell Festival at the Presbyterian Church of Toms River. We are blessed to have such a dedicated group of ringers who rehearse one hour each Monday evening. We hope our selections today add an enhanced spirituality to the worship service here at Point Pleasant Presbyterian. Personally, I would like to extend my thanks and praise for the ringers before you as well as the substitute ringers who are always willing to step in.

The Summer Heat
campaign is well past the half-way mark!
Our goal is $25,000 in special gifts and pledges, for new boilers to heat the Education Annex and the church offices and Nursery. Pledges may be paid over a six-month period. Here is an example of the range of gifts that will help us reach our goal (although gifts of any size are most welcome):
$5,000 - 1 gift needed
$2,500 - 2 gifts needed
$1,000 - 8 gifts needed (8 received)
$500 - 11 gifts needed (8 received)
$100 - 15 gifts needed (12 received)
$16,513 has been given or pledged to date out of the $25,000 needed. Thank you to all who have given or pledged!
If you've been sitting by and waiting to see what happens, now's the time to join your friends who have already made a commit- ment. If we all pitch in, we'll make our goal. Please pray for the success of this campaign and check out the giving thermometer in the Sanctuary to track further progress. Thank you! (The giving thermometer goes up to $20,000, the cost to replace the CE Annex boiler; $25,000 is the total needed for both buildings.)

RECITAL THIS WEEK - On June 7 at 6:00 p.m. St. Mary's By the Sea will be having a Recital featuring organist and Choir Director, Mr. Patrick Marques and his music students. Light refreshments will follow.
"HAIL AND FAREWELL" OFFICERS RECEPTION - Current members of the Session and the Board of Deacons, along with newly-elected Elders and Deacons, are invited to mark their calendars for a coffee and dessert reception om Tuesday evening, June 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m, at the Fellowship Room. The Committee Meetings will start at 7:30 p.m, followed by the Session Meeting at 8:30 p.m. We will be thanking those going off the boards for their service and welcoming those who are coming on. Please RSVP to the Church office.
REQUEST FROM THE DEACONS - We who serve on the Board of Deacons are continually grateful for our congregation's continued monetary support so we may fill the requests for assistance we receive. This Sunday, and every Communion Sunday, there are Deacon envelopes in the pews for you to make a donation to their fund. The Deacons carefully review each request for financial assistance and give assistance to those who need it the most. Know that your donation is truly helping someone who has a direct need.
CHANCEL CHOIR RECOGNITION - Next Sunday, June 14th, is Chancel Choir Recognition. The choir has a program of very special music planned for the 10:00 a.m. worship service - a combination of new material and some old favorites.
PASTOR CARL WILTON WILL BE AWAY ON STUDY LEAVE from Tuesday, June 9 through Monday, June 15. In case of pastoral emergency, please call the church office. After hours, please call Pastor Linda Chase at (732) 232-5007.

Cookbook by PW
Hear ye, hear ye, all of us by the sea, it's coming! Karen Norby and Nancy Cook are organizing the first cookbook that our church has published in nearly 20 years. Please help us out by sending in one or more of your favorite recipes. All of you men are urged to participate too.
We want this book to have a Jersey Shore theme. No matter what the recipe is, please try to spruce up your titles - for instance, Jersey Shore burgers, Lavallette Lemonade, or Point Pleasant fruit salad - same cherished recipes, slightly unique titles. Recipes may include: entrees, appetizers, drinks, soups, desserts, casseroles, or side dishes.
Our deadline is August 24 and you may deliver your recipes to the PW mailbox in the office or e mail it to ptpresbypwcookbook@gmail.com
Don't wait, flip or flop, get your creative juices crashing on the Shore. The proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will offset the Church Nursery costs.

Listen to Cassie Childers Interviewed on the BBC World Service
Cassie Childers - who grew up at PPPC, the daughter of Wendy and Lee Childers - has been the driving force in founding and developing the Tibetan National Women's Soccer Team, the Snow Lionesses. Based in Dharamsala, India among the Tibetan exile community, the team has dreams of achieving international recognition and competing in the Women's World Cup someday. Tibet, of course, is under Chinese administration, but the Tibetan expatriates hope to see their nation become independent someday.
Although Tibetan men are passionate about soccer, women in that traditional society have not historically been encouraged to play sports of any kind. Cassie began by recruiting young women to learn the game, providing basic coaching and instruction. Once a sufficient number of skilled players had emerged, the National Team was established. Although volunteer professional coaches are now working with the women as they prepare for major tournaments, Cassie is still in a key role as team manager. Recently the BBC World Service sent a correspondent to spend several weeks with Cassie and the team, documenting their journey through India as they competed in several major tournaments. You may listen to the 26-minute radio documentary, "Soccer Nuns" - including interviews with Cassie - at this page on the BBC Radio website. Go to that page and click on the photo of the team to listen.

PDA Responds to Floods in the Central U.S. Recent flash floods have devastated many communities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and other states of the Central Plains. Severe weather over the Memorial Day weekend left at least 17 people dead, at least 30 people missing, and thousands of homes washed away.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has been in continual contact with presbyteries in the region, to determine specific needs. One Great Hour of Sharing funds have been sent to Grace and New Covenant Presbyteries of Texas, with other presbyteries expected to request further help. Currently, eight members of the National Response Team (NRT) - four teams- are in Texas to help Presbyterian leadership in responding to needs within their communities. Please check back with the Central U.S. Floods page on the PDA website for more information, and to find out how you can help. |

It's always great to see kids start to cultivate a love for music, through our church's music programs!
