Friends,
Hockey fans are familiar with the phrase "empty the bench." It's what happens, in that rough-and-tumble sport, when a scuffle between two players becomes a brawl between two teams. Everyone in uniform rushes out onto the ice, including those sitting on the bench.
Diehard hockey fans live for such mayhem, when the competitive spirit is at its most intense. Rarely - thanks to the players' helmets and pads - does anyone get seriously hurt. When the bench empties, the team is united as one, contending with their opponents. While it may seem odd to apply such an aggressive image to the life of the church, emptying the bench makes sense with regard to God's call. Where are we, in our individual journeys of discipleship? Are we out there on the ice? Or are we sitting on the bench? This Sunday, we both welcome new members and ordain and install the elders and deacons the congregation has elected. We'll also recognize the Dove Choir members for their work throughout the year. That's a lot for one Sunday, but it does make sense to do these things together. In each of these instances, a Christian is saying "Here am I, send me!" (Which, as it so happens, is what the prophet Isaiah says, when he has his mystical religious experience in the Temple.) Is it an accident that pews resemble benches? For disciples of Christ, there is a time for sitting, and there is a time for doing. What time is it for you? Pastor Carl

We still need an overnight host for Wednesday, a dinner cook for Thursday and hosts (simply be here and visit) for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Please contact Dorothy Tolley (732-892-9306) if you can help.

The Summer Heat
campaign continues to heat up!
Our goal is $25,000 in special gifts and pledges, for new boilers to heat the Education Annex and the church offices and Nursery. Pledges may be paid over a six-month period. Here is an example of the range of gifts that will help us reach our goal (although gifts of any size are most welcome):
$5,000 - 1 gift needed
$2,500 - 3 gifts needed
$1,000 - 6 gifts needed (5 received)
$500 - 10 gifts needed (7 received)
$100 - 15 gifts needed (3 received)
$9,360 has been given or pledged to date. Thank you to all who have stepped forward!
Maybe you're ready to say with joy, "Here I am, Lord - I can make one of those gifts!" Please pray for the success of this campaign and check out the giving thermometer in the Sanctuary to track further progress. Thank you! (The giving thermometer goes up to $20,000, the cost to replace the CE Annex boiler; $25,000 is the total needed for both buildings.)

Cookbook by PW
Hear ye, hear ye, all of us by the sea, it's coming! Karen Norby and Nancy Cook are organizing the first cookbook that our church has published in nearly 20 years. Please help us out by sending in one or more of your favorite recipes. All of you men are urged to participate too.
We want this book to have a Jersey Shore theme. No matter what the recipe is, please try to spruce up your titles - for instance, Jersey Shore burgers, Lavallette Lemonade, or Point Pleasant fruit salad - same cherished recipes, slightly unique titles. Recipes may include: entrees, appetizers, drinks, soups, desserts, casseroles, or side dishes.
Our deadline is August 24 and you may deliver your recipes to the PW mailbox in the office or e mail it to ptpresbypwcookbook@gmail.com
Don't wait, flip or flop, get your creative juices crashing on the Shore. The proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will offset the Church Nursery costs.

In All We Do, We Praise Our Lord!

Just a quick recap of what we did last week, and what we will be covering this week.
Last week, we discussed Pentecost. We read Acts 2:1-20 and discussed how the Holy Spirit helps bring us closer to God. We found out why we had to wear red last Sunday too - to represent joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit, of course! We made name tags for ourselves on paper doves, then decorated them however we wanted to. We glued paper flames onto our name tags too. These name tags represent our unity with God, as well as the Holy Spirit. We finished up a little early so we took full advantage of the beautiful day and went outside to play on the playground! In honor of Dove Choir Recognition this week, we will be studying Psalm 98 which begins "Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things." Our Doves certainly have done that and we are so proud of them for getting up there every time and doing their best. These kids work so hard to learn these songs, and bright such joy and light into our church. Great job, Doves!!
See you on Sunday! Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers |

News From Point Beach Prep
This week we were treated to an art lesson on texture from Art Educator Karen Norby.
We explored various words to describe a texture: rough, sandy, bumpy, and smooth. Bags filled with textures were given to the children. Without peeking, they felt for given textures.
We observed how artist Vincent Van Gogh used thick paint to create his "Starry Night". The art reproduction is a photograph of his painting that is printed on paper, thus smooth. It gives the illusion of texture.
The students examined leaves looking for the side with the veins. They created texture rubbings of the leaves using crayons. Thank you, Mrs. Norby!

"Lend Me Your Voice!" Are you a singer? Would you be willing to lend your voice to a sacred-music recording project? This letter provides the details...
My name is Carl Fritsche. I am a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Tinton Falls and I am a published composer in need of some assistance. On the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of September (9/12/15 and 9/19/15) I hope to make a recording of my Christmas Cantata, The Holy Child, along with 3 other choral works. I am trying to assemble a choir for these recordings, hoping to get as many capable voices as possible. I will supply all the arrangements as well as accompaniment tracks in digital or CD format. The track I send will be the track that will accompany the singers for the recording. I am not planning on having rehearsals so I am counting on the individual singers to come prepared and know their parts. I know this is asking a lot but you will be providing a great and much appreciated favor to a local composer. Please email me at cfritsche@alumni.berklee.edu for more information.
To learn a little more about me or to hear some of my music please visit my website. |
