Weekly News for

Sunday,

February 1, 2015

Dear Friends,

In a couple of weeks it will be Valentine's Day, and we'll be hearing all sorts of sweet sentiment about love. Love is an overwhelming feeling of delight in another person, all those cards and songs and poems will be saying.

Sure it is. Who can disagree? Falling in love - being in love - is one of the great joys of life.

But that's only the half of it.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul gives us another way of looking at love. "Love builds up," he says.

That's hardly the sort of thing you expect to read on a Valentine. No hearts and flowers, no lace fripperies. Hammer and nails. Block and beam. Sheetrock and window-frame.

Love is tough, Paul is saying. Love is strong. Love works and sweats and strains to create something new, for the benefit of others.

Love doesn't just receive value. It adds value.

Two people in love, who honor that love over time, somehow become more than they could ever have been apart. And the same is true for communities of love and commitment, like the church.

Come to worship this Sunday, and find out more about love that builds up!

News and Notes

CHECK FOR SNOW CANCELLATIONS - In case of snow, please check the main page of the church website or the voice mail message about worship service times (732-899-0587) for the latest information about cancellations of church activities.

CONFIRMATION CLASS - Our organizational meeting for the Confirmation Class (scheduled for February 22) may seem a long way off, but it would really help us to know NOW who is interested in participating. The reason is that we need to act quickly to reserve places for class members at Camp Johnsonburg's Confirmation Retreat, which takes place from March 6-8.  The Camp no longer allows us to simply reserve a certain number of places; we've got to present them with actual names of participants. While we can make a few late adjustments in the roster, if we don't send them a list of names in the near future, the whole group may miss out on this wonderful and memorable experience. Parents: please call or email the church office today if there's a young person in your family, grade 7 or above, who will be part of the Confirmation Class. The Class will meet on Sunday evenings from 5:00-6:00 pm, with Pastor Wilton and Dale Leasure as leaders.

HURRICANE SANDY FREE LEGAL CLINIC - Volunteer Lawyers for Justice are offering a free legal clinic for Superstorm Sandy survivors: February 6, 2015, 9:00-11:00 a.m., Brick Presbyterian Church, 111 Drum Point Road, Brick, NJ
More information is available on the Monmouth Presbytery website.
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday Sunday Recap

Last week:
Bible Verse: Luke 19:1-10. Last week we talked about Zacchaeus. We talked about bullying and even played a little game that showed us how it felt to be wronged by someone, and then later have that person make it right.  We talked about why Jesus forgave Zacchaeus, why He encourages us to forgive those who have made mistakes, and how it helps us be better people while fostering our relationship with God.

This week: John 21:1-14, Ephesians 4:29, Romans 8:31 Fishers of People
I hope everyone remembers Pastor Linda's "Time for Children" last week!  Your church homework was to explain what it meant when Pastor Linda talked about how Jesus "fished for people."  I hope we will hear some great answers!  Keeping on the theme of Jesus the Fisherman, we are going to talk about the time Jesus appeared to some of his disciples at the Sea of Galilee.  The disciples weren't catching anything, but Jesus encouraged them to keep going, and suddenly, there were more fish than they could haul in!  We are going to talk about things that discourage us from trying, and things that encourage us to keep trying.

See you on SundayPeace and Blessings

      VOLUNTEER VILLAGE

Volunteer Village Continues in 2015

Volunteers welcome

Although the Volunteer Village has been on hiatus from hosting groups during the cold winter months, the Sandy Team continues to plan and make arrangements for spring and summer. The Volunteer Village has continued to be successful in its efforts due to the many wonderful volunteers from our congregation.  There are many ways to be involved with the Volunteer Village. Opportunities to help include shopping, cooking, welcoming, construction coordination as well as overall hosting responsibilities.  If you would like to be more involved, please speak with one of the Pastors or ask one of the team members who will be in the Village during the Communion Breakfast this Sunday.

                                        MISSION

Please Pray for Presbyterians in Colombia

These are difficult times for Presbyterians in Colombia. Leaders of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia who live in and around the city of Baranquilla have received very public death threats.

In years past, we received visits from Alice Winters, a PCUSA mission co-worker who once taught at the theological seminary in Baranquilla, and whom our church supported financially. Some of the pastors who have been threatened may well have been people she worked with.

A coalition of churches and peacemaking organizations in Colombia has responded to the threats in a pastoral letter which states, in part: "We believe these threats to be religious persecution as they are clearly threatening the development and free practice of our pastoral and humanitarian work with those who suffer the consequences of the armed conflict, and our participation in peacemaking for Colombia as the Gospel requires of us."

The letter calls for "sister churches...to continue praying for us, and to increase their accompaniment and support to continue the work of building a lasting peace for Colombia, grounded in the message of the Gospel."

The PCUSA's Presbyterian Peace Fellowship has an online petition you can sign, denouncing the death threats and expressing support for those who continue to place themselves at risk, for the sake of human rights.
