Dear Friends,
It was after 10 o'clock at night, and I was getting ready to start my hour-long drive home after teaching a 3-hour class in Presbyterian worship and theology at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. I started the process of shutting down my laptop when I was greeted by a blue screen with the dreaded warning message: "Windows is now installing 22 updates. Please do not power off or unplug your machine."
Letting out a resigned sigh, I settled down to wait, hoping the security guard wouldn't stop by and ask me to leave so he could lock up the building. I've seen that blue screen before. The laptop seems to know when I'm in a hurry to pack it up and put it in the car so I can go someplace. It chooses that precise moment to make me sit for 20 minutes or so as it ponderously installs its latest operating-system updates, before finally shutting down.
I don't like to wait. Who does? Waiting is one of life's little annoyances.
But sometimes there's no escaping it. Sometimes there's even a spiritual meaning to waiting.
Jesus tells a parable about ten bridesmaids, each one tending a vigil lamp as she waits for the bridegroom to ceremonially arrive. The wedding can't start until he shows up. Five bridesmaids are ready to wait: they've brought extra lamp-oil. Five haven't thought that far ahead.
Those who are spiritually wise, Jesus is saying, know how to wait.
We live in a have-it-now culture. Psychologists tell us one of the hardest things to teach children nowadays is how to cope with "delayed gratification."
Is waiting a waste of time? It depends what we're waiting for. Sometimes the waiting - with lamps alight - is part of the experience.
I'll bet you can't wait to hear Sunday's sermon!

Sunday School News
Last week in Sunday School
Bible Verses: Genesis 25:27-34, 27:1-45, 32:9-21, 33:1-4
Last week, we talked about forgiveness. We learned about the story of Issac's sons, Jacob and Esau. Then we discussed times when we have messed up and been forgiven, as well as being the ones to forgive. We made "paper hugs" to remind us of how Esau forgave Jacob and hugged him.
This week in Sunday School
Bible Verses: Genesis 37:1-36
This week, we will be studying the story of Joseph and talking about our strength in faith and importance of love and forgiveness within our families. We will be doing an exercise in teamwork to show how important unity is. Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
Sunday School Coordinator

Operation Christmas Child - Shoe Boxes are due November 16
Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Once again the PW will be working with Samaritan's Purse to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.
1. Shoebox
Use an empty shoebox (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Boy or Girl
Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.
3. Fill with Gifts
Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball or toy truck.
4. $7 Donation
Please donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation.
5. Drop Off
Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop it off in the North Hall before November 16, 2014. Gift Ideas SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. TOYS: Small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc. HYGIENE ITEMS: Toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc. OTHER: T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries) A PERSONAL NOTE: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family.
