Dear Friends,
Appropriately enough for a few days after Halloween, this Sunday we'll hear a ghost story - from the Bible! It's the story of the medium of Endor, a mysterious woman to whom King Saul comes in disguise. He makes a weird request of her: to summon the ghost of the prophet Samuel.
Saul's read the unmistakable political signs: his kingship is in decline, and a new contender, David, is on the rise. He's looking for any endorsement he can get: even if it comes from beyond the grave.
It does not turn out well for Saul.
Memory is a powerful thing. The more we grow in years, the more memories we accumulate of loved ones who are no longer with us. Those memories - and the emotions they summon up - can be intense. Sometimes such recollections have a way of tying us to the past, to the detriment of life in the present.
This is our annual Service of Remembrance: a time for recalling those people who have been significant to us in the past, but whose futures are now wholly in the hands of God. As remember them, we cannot summon them back, as the ill-advised Saul tries to do in this weird tale. No, remembrance - in its truest form - is as much about the future as it is about the past.
"Do this in remembrance of me," says Jesus, in those familiar words of institution from the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. As we break bread and remember, are we looking back, primarily - or are we looking forward?
The way we answer that question is significant.
This Sunday, come to the Table of the Lord - and remember!

Sunday School News
Last week in Sunday School
Halloween Party! Last week, our Halloween party was a success! It was so awesome to see everyone in costume. We did a review of what we learned, then we did crafts, had some healthy (and 1 or 2 not so healthy) treats and played some silly games. We played candy corn toss and had a very silly competition where the kids had to eat donuts hanging from strings without using their hands. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs!
This week in Sunday School
This week, we will be talking about forgiveness. We will be learning about the story of Issac's sons, Jacob and Esau. then we will be discussing times where we have messed up and been forgiven, as well as being the ones to forgive.
Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
Sunday School Coordinator

Operation Christmas Child
Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Once again the PW will be working with Samaritan's Purse to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.
1. Shoebox
Use an empty shoebox (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Boy or Girl
Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.
3. Fill with Gifts
Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball or toy truck.
4. $7 Donation
Please donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation.
5. Drop Off
Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop it off in the North Hall before November 16, 2014. Gift Ideas SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. TOYS: Small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch,® toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky,® etc. HYGIENE ITEMS: Toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc. OTHER: T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries) A PERSONAL NOTE: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include your name and address, the child may write back.)
DO NOT INCLUDE: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out- of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snowglobes or glass containers; aerosol cans. Labels are on the table in the Narthex and also can be downloaded at the Samaritan's Purse web page.
