Dear Friends,

A hurricane named Gonzalo passed us by last week, but its northeasterly arc continued, slamming into western Scotland. While Gonzalo's power was largely spent by the time it made landfall, the hurricane still made for some dramatic waves (as you can see in this photo of Ardrossan, on the Firth of Clyde southwest of Glasgow).

This coming Wednesday, October 29th, is the two-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Anniversaries are powerful things. Lots of us who lived through Sandy - especially those who experienced losses of homes or property - will experience uneasiness, maybe even some depression, as that day draws near.

Although the fronts of most houses look OK, we all know there's still a lot of rebuilding going on. Some homes have been raised up, but a great many more still need to lifted up onto pilings. For homeowners awaiting insurance payments or state grants, the Sandy anniversary brings heightened frustration. Lots of people are asking, "Why are things still not back to normal?"

If you're having similar thoughts or feelings as the anniversary draws near, believe me, you're not alone.  Two years after the storm, our communities are still living "the new normal," and we're not sure we like it.

This Sunday marks the 500th birthday of a man whose life was hardly normal: John Knox, Scotland's great Protestant reformer. Leading his country's struggle for religious and political freedom, Knox survived the siege of St. Andrews Castle, was arrested and spent the next 19 months as a French galley-slave, nearly dying of a fever before being released.

The fiery Knox continued to place himself in harm's way, publicly arguing with Mary, Queen of Scots, the Roman Catholic monarch. He held fast to Reformation ideals like justification by grace through faith and the authority of scripture.

Knox's cause eventually triumphed, but throughout his turbulent life he had many occasions to embrace a new normal. With God's help, he managed to do so, without being shipwrecked on the shoals of doubt or despair.

His faith, of course, provided the strength and stability he needed. Faith in Jesus Christ can do that for us, as well, as we live into our own new normals, whatever they may be.

Come to worship this  Sunday - let's talk more about it!

                                SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School

Last week in Sunday School

Last week, we talked about helping people, even when no one is watching.  We learned about Abraham asking for God's help finding a wife for Isaac and then Rebekah.  We talked about how important it is to help others because we should, not because of what we can get from it and how to be good friends and good Christians.  We had a very sweet surprise for our good little Christians!  The kids each decorated 2 cookies.  One cookie they kept for themselves to enjoy, and the other was to be taken home and given to someone who helps them as a way to say, "Thank you."

Greetings from Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church's Women

PW Logo

The members of the Presbyterian Women (PW) of Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church warmly welcome all women to our church family!  All women who attend our church are already members of Presbyterian Women.  Choosing to join a circle truly enhances your spiritual involvement in our church.  We have promes as a congregation to "love, enocourage and support you and to share the good news of the gospels with you."

One of the best ways to begin your journey to inquiry in the church is exploring the five PW circles.  Our cities are symbolic of the intertwining never ending love and faith we have in each other and in our church.  Our circles pursue Bible studies, support both local and worldwide mission, and work towards peace and justice.

Members are extremely supportive of each other, sharing their joys and concerns; providing a strong network of compassion and building meaninful lasting friendships.  We are fun loving, versatile and diverse.

Circles have monthly meetings during the church calendar year of weekday afternoons or evenings.  They are held in the Chittick Lounge or members' homes.  If you are considering circle membership, or would like to attend a meeting, please contact one of the membership coordinators, Nancy Cook (732-295-1612) or Karen Norby 9732-295-8174).  If you prefer, write your name, telephone number, and "PW Membership" on a pew card and place it in the offering plate. Come join us!!

CROP Walk Update

The Youth Connection raised $205.85 for the CROP Walk last week.  Additional money is still coming in! Thank you to everyone who contributed.
           POINT BEACH PREP

Feeding Our Hearts

St. Gregory's Pantry
Last Thursday and Friday, our Nursery and Pre-K classes took field trips to St Gregory's Food Pantry.  There was a request for soup so each of our 42 families brought in non-perishable food items, mainly soup, to donate.  Point Beach Prep also donated 2 dozen cans of soup, so we had a lot of items to bring over.

We had our local police officer come to help us cross the street.  We held hands and walked across the street to the Pantry to learn about helping the community.  When we returned, one of our students commented on the trip.  He told us that our field trip to Hoffman's Ice Cream during our Summer Camp fed our bellies but our trip to the help people at the Food Pantry fed our hearts!

It was a wonderful experience for everyone!

      MISSION

PDA banner As the Ebola crisis continues to escalate, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) programs are working with mission partners, the West Africa Initiative (WAI) and Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance, on the immediate medical crisis as well as the secondary impacts on communities in the region. The response has focused on:

Supplying essential protective gear and supplies to protect medical workers

Raising awareness on the symptoms of Ebola and preventive methods

Improving food security and incomes of families by maintaining agricultural production at the community level

"This is not just a public health crisis," said Dr. Margaret Chat, World Health Organization director-general. "This is a social, humanitarian and economic crisis as well as a threat to national security beyond the outbreak zones."

Sento Conteh, a WAI facilitator in the Kenema District of Sierra Leone says, "Ebola is worse than the civil war. In the war you could see and hear the danger, this Ebola is a silent and invisible killer."

In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food security. Many communities are being quarantined, and reports of food shortages abound.

"It is very difficult for the groups to take their produce to the markets in Monrovia. Village markets are closed, and group members have no income coming in," says Thomas Hackor, WAI Country Coordinator in Liberia.

The WAI program has on-the-ground presence, credibility and organizational structure to reach rural communities with necessary information and assistance. Despite travel restrictions, WAI facilitators have been able to get permission to travel to the villages in need of help.

In the United States, a PC(USA) committee is monitoring the Ebola situation and is prepared to provide guidance to congregations should the situation reach a level that requires a substantial response.

As the crisis continues, our partners and the people they serve will need our ongoing prayers and support.

Please stand in the GAP for families impacted by Ebola.
