Dear Friends,
In 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression, Americans were trying so hard to cope with suffering at home that few had energy for worrying about the rest of the world. It was precisely at that time that members of Pittsburgh's Shadyside Presbyterian Church held the first World Communion Sunday celebration.
The idea was for Protestant congregations the world over, few of whom celebrate the sacrament of the Lord's Supper weekly, to cooperatively schedule their communion services on the same Sunday. Combined with other denominations that celebrate the sacrament weekly, that act would create a mighty display of global Christian unity.
The idea caught on quickly among American Presbyterians. The entire denomination endorsed the idea in 1936, and in 1940 the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches) did likewise, bringing other denominations into the mix.
Imagine what was happening in 1940. Europe and east Asia were already at war, and the United States would enter the war a little more than a year later, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The thought of Christians on both sides of that global conflagration joining in silent unity around the Lord's Table offered a glimmer of hope for peace that would one day come.
The tradition continues. This Sunday in worship, we break bread and share the cup of blessing, celebrating our unity in Christ. We'll receive the Peace & Global Witness special offering (see below). The sermon will be on the Ten Commandments, the Chancel Choir will sing and we'll gather afterwards in the Great Hall of the Education Annex for a Communion Breakfast - no reservations necessary, just come!
We'll save a place for you.
Pastor Carl

Peace & Global Witness Offering To Be Received this Sunday
This Sunday in worship we receive the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s Peace & Global Witness Offering. The successor to the old Peacemaking Offering, this special offering supports not only peacemaking work but also the denomination's global mission outreach. A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Our congregation retains 25% of this offering for local peacemaking ministries. In the past, the Session has authorized the Providence House domestic violence shelter as the recipient of these local funds. Gifts to this Offering provide opportunities for:
Peace building
While violence and oppression know no age, gender, or race, women and children are most often the victims of these atrocities. The P&GW Offering will focus on these by providing prevention, accompaniment, and eradication. An example is the Colombia Accompaniment Program, which brings short-term volunteers from the USA to Colombia to accompany local Presbyterian pastors whose lives have been threatened by paramilitary forces. Big landowners and drug producers hire these squads of armed men to run small farmers off their land. The presence of the American "accompaniers" is enough to deter those who would harm these courageous pastors who are standing up for their people's rights. Global issues
Lack of education across the globe has become one of the most serious issues facing our population. A significant mission of the P&GW Offering will be addressing illiteracy and poverty through outreach and community development. An example is a partnership between the PC(USA) and several Korean denominations to engage in outreach and discipleship by working to empower women, prevent human trafficking, and encourage proper education.

Sunday School
Sunday School's off to a great start, with over 30 kids registered!
Kids come into the Sanctuary with their families and stay in worship for the first 20 minutes or so. After that, they cross the street, accompanied by their teachers, to the Education Annex for their classes.
On Communion Sundays, one of the pastors brings the communion elements over the Annex, celebrating the sacrament at the Sunday School closing worship service.
We realize kids sometimes have family or sports commitments that make it difficult to attend weekly. While we think weekly attendance provides the best learning experience, we're glad to have kids come on whatever basis works for them and their families.
Tricia Stoffers is Sunday School Coordinator. Want to find out more? Just send her an email, or call the church office.

SEEKING A CHURCH TREASURER
|
| |
The Session's Finance Team has rewritten the job description for PPPC's volunteer Church Treasurer position. This key position in the life of the church has been completely redesigned, so as to require a visit to the church office just one or two times per week, for about 3-5 hours total. Got some financial savvy? Got basic computer skills? Want to help your church's many ministries have the strong support they deserve?
If so, please give a call to the church office. We're eager to tell you more!

CROP Walk
Did you know that 11% of the world's population does not have access to clean water?
That's almost 800,000,000 people. We can't help them all but a successful CROP Hunger Walk can help at least some of them gain access to the clean water we take for granted.
This year's CROP Walk is October 19. A registration form with all the information for our Walk on Sunday the 19th can be downloaded

Prayer Request for Gwen and John Haspels Presbyterian World Mission is asking for prayers for longtime Presbyterian Mission coworkers Gwen and John Haspels, who were injured Wednesday, October 1, when their car was attacked by armed bandits on a rural road in Ethiopia.
After the attack, John drove Gwen four hours to the nearest hospital in Aman, Ethiopia, where he was treated for injuries to his eye and is now in good condition. Gwen sustained more serious injuries and was in critical condition when they arrived at the hospital. Her condition has since been upgraded to fair, and the couple is now en route to an expertly equipped hospital in South Africa.
World Mission's regional liaison for the Horn of Africa, Rev. Michael Weller, told us by phone from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that the couple is greatly loved by the people of Ethiopia. He said that more than 200 people had quickly gathered at the rural hospital in Aman to show their love and support and that almost 1,000 were present when they left the airport in Addis Ababa on Thursday.
Gwen and John Haspels have been mission coworkers in Ethiopia since 1974, serving at the invitation of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY). They are currently planting churches among the Suri people of Ethiopia, who had none before the Haspels and their EECMY colleagues arrived. |
