Weekly News for
Sunday,
June 29, 2014

Dear Friends,
This Sunday is a very special and long-awaited day. We're going to be dedicating the new Glory to God hymnals.
We're very grateful that nearly 200 of these books were donated by Jodi Erlandsen and her husband Chris Spitler, in loving member of Jodi's father, Eric Erlandsen. A dozen additional volumes have been donated by other members of our PPPC family; these names are noted in this Sunday's bulletin.
Last Sunday was our annual celebration of the Chancel Choir and all they do to enrich our worship, musically, throughout the year. This Sunday, it's all about congregational singing.
The Chancel Choir is going to be present in the choir loft, but not to sing anthems. They'll be there to join in and support the hymn-singing of the congregation.
While the new hymnal includes all the tried-and-true hymns from the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal we're used to singing, it offers a number of new treasures as well. In the last 25 years or so, there has been an explosion of writing and composing in the traditional-hymn genre. A number of "praise songs" from the "contemporary Christian worship" movement are also included. There's also a sampling of international hymns, reminding us that the church of Jesus Christ transcends every national boundary - and that, even in this country, there are Presbyterian churches that minister primarily to immigrant communities. Especially notable among these international hymns are songs that have grown out of the worship life of Scotland's Iona Community and France's Taize Community.
Our plan is to introduce the new hymns gradually, to give us all time to get to know them. A typical Sunday worship service will include some of the new and some of the old.
This Sunday, though, it's all about the new hymns! The time of the sermon will be devoted to a hymn sing, during which I'll provide some background and an introduction to each one. A few of these are completely new, but a number of the others are already familiar to many of us, even though they haven't been included in our old hymnals.
I hope you can join us for this memorable celebration of hymns, and all that they mean to our worship life!
Pastor Carl

SUMMER GENEROSITY - Wherever you find yourself during these summer months, we hope you'll continue to remember the church in your financial giving, even if you aren't present each Sunday in worship. You may want to take advantage of our secure online giving option, which is a great way to maintain your regular giving even while you're away. You can even pre-plan automatic deductions from your bank account for whatever dates you specify. Thanks for being a good Christian steward, all year round!
ELIZABETH DeROSA IN FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - This Summer Elizabeth DeRosa will be in the Goodspeed production of Fiddler on the Roof. The show opens on June 27 and continues until Sept 12. Robin and Joe DeRosa will be attending a matinee on July 9 and the evening show on July 24, if anyone would like to join them. The historic Goodspeed Opera House is home to the American musical! Set along the tranquil Connecticut River, their two intimate theaters bring you closer to the excitement of live musicals. The beautiful surrounding countryside is brimming with restaurants, shops, and galleries for a get-away. Tickets or more information can be found online at www.goodspeed.org
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLAREMONT - On the 4th Sunday of the month our church takes on the responsibility for a service at the Claremont Nursing Home. This short service is held at their facility from 2:30 to 3:00 pm. We need volunteers to lead a simple worship service. Generally there are two people to lead this service. A scripture reading, a short message (five minutes), and a couple of hymns and you have made their day. Your ideas and suggestions are also welcome. There will be a sign up sheet in the North Hall- or contact Randy Crate at (732)899-1038. The following dates are open in 2015: January 25, February 22, March 22, April 26, May 24, and June 28.
SUMMER OFFICE HOURS - During the months of July and August the church office will be closing at noon on Fridays. Please have all bulletin information in by Thursday mornings.
DR. WILTON'S VACATION - Dr. Wilton will be on vacation July 6-August 3. In case of pastoral emergency, please call the church office. After hours, please call the Rev. Linda Chase at home, (732) 899-2513.
A BIG "THANK YOU" FROM THOSE GOING ON THE MISSION TRIP THIS SUMMER - After last week's requested - we are happy to say we have covered our transportation costs. Your support and generosity is overwhelming. We could not have done this without you!

News About the Church Picnic
On Sunday, July 20th, we will once again have our Church Worship and Picnic at Camp Zehnder.
Following the service, we will have an old time church picnic including games, fellowship, SWIMMING, fishing, and of course a great spread of FOOD as only Presbyterians can put on. Hamburgers, hot dogs, rolls, lemonade, ice tea, and water will be provided by the church as well as the paper goods. Sign-up sheets to bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert will be out soon.
YMCA Camp Zehnder located on Herbertsville Road in Brick has it all. Facilities include a covered pavilion, large swimming pool with changing rooms, flush toilets, walking trails, large fields for games, and fishing in their own pond. Once again our own "Fishing Pro" will be there to help with poles, bait, and everything you need.
Anyone interested in help organize this fun-filled day can contact Sue Hankins.

Vacation Bible School August 18-22
Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church is happy to provide a Vacation Bible School in the air-conditioned Education Annex this Summer. Preparations for this fun-filled week are now being made. This program is for all children who have finished grades Pre-K through 5 and is open to kids from the entire community. Join us as we go to Rome this Summer! They've captured Apostle Paul and he's in prison in Rome. So, we're going to visit him to cheer him up, as well as seek out the underground church - you know, a secret church where the Christians are worshiping Jesus. Bring your friends as we explore ancient Rome from 6-8 pm. Our adventure will begin and finish downstairs in the CE Annex classrooms. Registration Forms can be downloaded or picked up in the Narthex and returned to the church office. We could use help in the planning and during the week. Please email Christina Parrott and let her know you can help. Teen helpers are especially welcome!
