Dear Friends,
Make a Joyful Noise!
This Sunday, June 15th, is the annual Chancel Choir recognition. It will undoubtedly be an uplifting and joyous service of worship. It is also Father's Day which is another reason to celebrate.
Even though our Sunday school has concluded until September, we hope that you will join us this Sunday to lift your voice in praise and thanksgiving to God. See you in church.
Blessings,
Pastor Linda

Chancel Choir Recognition

The Chancel Choir is blessed with the privilege of serving Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church in the worship of God through music. For thirty-two (32) years Sara and I have enjoyed being a part of this special form of worship here at PPPC!
What has made this task so special and so enjoyable is being associated with this very talented, dedicated, and special group of people we lovingly call The Chancel Choir. We are more than just a Choir, we are also a supportive church family.
I would like to particularly thank my "church wife" and accompanist, Sara Hoey. She is always supporting me and the choir with her dedication, her compassion, her attention to detail, her sense of humor and her musicality.
And, on this day of "recognition" I would like to say "thanks" once again to not only the members of today's Chancel Choir but to all the alumni who are no longer able to participate as well as newer members. You, past and present members, have enriched this congregation with your beautiful voices and continue to make Sara and me extremely proud and happy for your many hours, weeks, and years of service to your Church and to the glory of God.
The Choir, Sara and I are most grateful, too, for the continued support of this congregation. Remember, there is always room for YOU in the Chancel Choir! Bill Shoppell Chancel Choir Director

"Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God's people." - Ephesians 6:18 (CEV)
The Prayer Family for the week of June 15 is Marjorie Watson. Let us be prayerfully aware of Marjorie, as well as all our members and friends.
Other prayer concerns: Julia Fina; Susan Robbins; Audrey Pearce; James Graham; Charleigh Jo, (newborn granddaughter of Robin and Joe DeRosa) all those in the military, as well as those struggling with addictions and mental illness.

CLASS OF 2014 - PPPC would like to recognize all those students who will be graduating from college or high school this year. If you know of someone graduating from high school or college, please let us know. You can drop a note with their name and the school where they are graduating from in the offering plate, or call/email the church office with the information.
THE COURAGE TO GROW OLD - We will continue this Monday with our Book Study. Please read chapters 3 and 4 and be prepared to discuss. Bring to class any comments, questions, concerns or anything else that grew out of your reading. We still have a few books left for $8 for anyone who would like a copy and cannot attend the class.

At its meeting on June 11, 2014, after welcoming new officers and saying farewell to those who are moving on to other work in the church, the Session took the following actions:
1. Approved the distribution of leftover Presbyterian Hymnals (1990) to the Lakehurst Presbyterian Church, and other churches that may need them.
2. Approved the recommendation of the search committee that Tricia Stoffers be hired as the new Sunday School Coordinator (see Tricia's bio below, under Sunday School).
3. Noted that Erica Ferguson, summer seminary intern with the Volunteer Village, is now on the job. She's a senior at New Brunswick Theological Seminary (see Erica's bio below, under Volunteer Village).
4. Approved an appeal to the congregation for additional copies of the Glory to God Hymnals, which can be offered in honor or memory of loved ones, at a cost of $22 per volume. Bookplates will be placed in these volumes, acknowledging the gift. Approximately 12 additional hymnals are needed.
5. Noted that, since Travis Dunham is attending college out of state this fall, we have a need for someone to lock the church building up each Sunday around noon. Salary is $10 per week.
6. Decided to search for someone to coordinate the kitchen helpers for the community dinner on Christmas Day.
7. Designated Carol Bonebrake as the Session's liaison to the Board of Deacons.
8. Approved a Vacation Bible School for the summer (probably during one week in mid-August), to be coordinated by Christina Parrott and other volunteers. Anyone interested in lending a hand, please call the church office.
9. Learned that Point Beach Prep registration is nearly full for the fall, and that Point Beach Prep will be holding a series of one-week pre-schoolers' "Summer Camp" programs in the building throughout the month of July. Parents may register their children for one or more weeks (see the Point Beach Prep section, below, for details).
10. Changed the date of the Church Picnic to Sunday, July 20, at YMCA Camp Zehnder (due to a booking error by the camp). Morning worship that day will take place AT CAMP ZEHNDER at 10:00 am, with the picnic to follow.
11. Discussed further the need for a part-time sexton, 5-10 hours a week, to do minor repairs and building-maintenance tasks.
12. Reorganized into new Action Teams (see below).
|
New Action Teams The backbone of the church's work is the Session's system of Action Teams (otherwise known as committees - but because the emphasis is on getting things done, we emphasize the action element!).
In an effort to broaden participation and involve more of the congregation in the joy of serving Christ, the Session has completely reorganized and simplified the Action Teams. There will now be just four: Worship, Caring, Outreach and Resources. Four to six Session members will serve on each Team, along with representatives from the Board of Deacons and from the congregation at large.
Some Action Teams may create specialized work groups under their oversight, to do particular tasks. Some of these smaller work groups will be more or less permanent, and others will come and go as the need arises. The Action Teams themselves will remain constant, meeting on a monthly basis, September through June.
Action Teams will meet from 7:00-8:15 on the evenings of stated Session meetings (which are usually the third Tuesday of the month, September through June). On those evenings, all four Teams will gather briefly for opening worship, and will then break up into different rooms for their individual meetings. Following these Action Team meetings, the Session as a whole will reconvene to act on recommendations from the Teams and to conduct other important business.
Action Teams and their working groups will schedule additional meetings as needed.
Below is a list of each of the Action Teams, with the programs, activities and tasks for which they are responsible. There are no Team chairpersons, as yet, just members. Each Team will elect a chairperson at its first meeting. Along with the description of each Team are the names of the Session members serving on it. The Deacons will divide themselves up, three to a team. Church members and friends will serve on Action Teams as well. This is just a preliminary list. We can and do expect many other church members to join in the exciting and important work the Teams will be doing, as we move into the 2014-2015 program year! WORSHIP ACTION TEAM

We Need You!
Do you love Jesus Christ and his church? Is the Lord leading you to use your spiritual gifts in Christian service? As we live into our new Action Teams plan, we need lots and lots of church members and friends to pitch in and lend a hand - serving on one of the Action Teams, or on one of the working groups that report to them.
To serve on an Action Team, you'll need to be available on the third Tuesday evening of each month, for a meeting lasting just over an hour. The various working groups that are accountable to each Action Team will meet at other times.
Want to find out more? Just speak to any Session member, to Pastor Linda or to Pastor Carl.

Live Streaming of General Assembly Live streaming of the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), meeting in Detroit, Michigan from Saturday, June 14 through Saturday, June 21, is available online on the PCUSA website. Only "plenary" sessions (meetings of the whole General Assembly) will be streamed. That means the only streaming on Sunday, June 15 will be from 2:30-4:30 pm, and there will be no live streaming at all on Monday or Tuesday, June 16-17, because that's when the General Assembly committees will be meeting.
Most observers have found that the most interesting time to watch live streaming is on Saturday evening (June 14), when the new moderator will be elected, and, later, on Wednesday evening (June 18) and all day Thursday and Friday (June 19-20).
In past years, the most-discussed items of business have been scheduled for Friday afternoon and evening. If there are more than 2 or 3 controversial items, one of them may be scheduled for Thursday as well.
PPPC Ruling Elder Jim McGuire will be attending the Assembly as a Commissioner (elected representative) of Monmouth Presbytery. Dr. Wilton will be attending as an observer, in his capacity as Presbytery Stated Clerk.

What's New In Glory to God?
The Glory to God Presbyterian hymnal is now in our pews! We'll be dedicating the new hymnals in a special celebration in our regular worship service on Sunday, June 29th. This hymnal - the best-selling in Presbyterian history - includes all the familiar hymns we're used to singing, but offers a whole range of new hymns as well. Each week in this space, we'll share a video highlighting one of the great new songs from Glory to God. This week's selection is "Gather Us In." Click on the image below to have a listen!
 | In this Place (Gather Us In) |
|
Additional Hymnals Needed
We are in need of approximately 12 more Glory to God hymnals in order to cover the needs of peak-attendance worship services.
Anyone who is interested in donating a hymnal in honor or memory of a loved one, at a cost of $22 per book, please contact the church office.
Thank you!

Tricia Stoffers, New Sunday School Coordinator We are pleased to announce that the Session has approved church member Tricia Stoffers as our new Sunday School Coordinator, replacing Sarah Morrison, who is moving to Texas. Tricia grew up in PPPC. She's the daughter of Tom Reinhold and Regina Stoffers Reinhold, and the mother of Payton, a Sunday School student.
Tricia, who holds a B.S. degree from Kean University, currently works as a substitute teacher in local public schools.
She has been active in the Sunday School as a teacher, and also serves as a Youth Connection advisor.
A Youth Connection member who's also a Sunday School helper had this to say about Tricia:
"Her personality and demeanor 'lit up' the classroom immediately. Her excitement for church and life was contagious.... Tricia has been at the heart of every activity at the Sunday School this past year.... She walks with a good head on her shoulders and works with the clear purpose to better the Christian education of every student, even if present for just one week. She is the embodiment of the quote, 'The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.'"
Tricia will need "that little extra" - in the form of volunteer help - from lots of church members as well, be they parents of Sunday School students or simply people who care about helping kids get to know Jesus. Want to find out more about becoming a Sunday School teacher or helper, for all or part of the 2014-2015 year? Tricia would be glad to hear from you!
