Weekly News for

Sunday,

April 20, 2014

Friends,

We all like to be recognized. A cheery hello from a neighbor in the grocery store, a quick smile from across a crowded room, even the wagging tail of a dog who's sniffed the back of our hand before --- it's all good.

It's even better if we're interacting with someone who not only recognizes us, but who knows our name. It makes the  world feel that much friendlier --- and us not so alone.

How much more important such acts of recognition can be in times of difficulty or loss!  Mary Magdalene discovered this outside the empty tomb. The man who greeted her by name became, in an instant, not some anonymous gardener but the one person in all the world she most wanted --- and needed --- to see!

If Easter were merely a festival of springtime, it would be a pleasant weekend diversion. If it were but a celebration of a man who returned from death centuries ago, it would be miraculous and awe-inspiring. If that same man were not just a figure out of history, but a person who knows us and loves us --- even knows us by name --- it would be life-changing.

And so it is --- if we open our minds to the good news of Jesus' resurrection, and invite him anew into our hearts!

Join us this Sunday, at 9:00 or 11:00, for this greatest celebration of our Christian faith!

Session Highlights At its meeting on April 15, 2014, the Session took the following actions:

1. Approved the purchase of new Glory to God hymnals for the Sanctuary, made possible by a gift of $3,500 from Jodi Erlandsen in loving memory of her father, Eric Erlandsen. This is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s newly-published denominational hymnal. You can read more about the Glory to God hymnal on the Presbyterian Hymnal Project website.

2. Decided to dispose of our present Presbyterian Hymnals (1990) in the following fashion:

a) First, to offer those hymnals given in honor or memory of loved ones to the donors for home use. (This will be accomplished by arranging the hymnals on tables in alphabetical order for a limited period of time, and inviting the donors to pick them up.)

b) Second, to offer remaining copies to the congregation at large for their home use.

c) Third, to donate the remaining hymnals to another church or organization.

d) Fourth, if no such recipient can be found, to recycle the remaining copies.

3. Voted to offer Covenant, a new small-group adult Bible study, in the 2014-2015 program year. Covenant, a 24-week video-based study of the whole Bible, is divided into three 8-week segments. It is designed for groups of 10-12 adults. Our pastors will lead the groups, which will operate in sync with each other over the same 8-week terms.  We will start with two different time slots: Monday mornings (with Pastor Linda) and Wednesday evenings (with Pastor Carl). Other time slots will be opened up according to demand. The first 8-week term will commence in the fall (dates to be announced). In the meantime, you can read more about Covenant on the program's website.

You can also view an introductory video about Covenant here:

4. Called a congregational meeting for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, to elect ruling elders, deacons and Endowment & Emergency Fund trustees.

5. Scheduled the ordination/installation of new officers for Pentecost, June 8.

6. Noted that Monmouth Presbytery has elected Ruling Elder Jim McGuire as a commissioner to the 221st General Assembly of the PC(USA), which will meet from June 14-21 in Detroit.

7. Scheduled the next Inquirers Group for Sunday, May 4, with new members to be publicly welcomed on May 11.

8. Granted $10,000 from Hurricane Sandy relief funds to the Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group for direct assistance to individuals who are restoring their homes. These are funds that have been given to the church by congregations and individuals for that purpose.

9. Granted $3,200 from accumulated "per diem" funds (user fees contributed by visiting volunteer work teams) to the Mary's Table weekly community meal program at St. Mary's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Members of work teams typically have their Thursday dinner at Mary's Table.

10. Voted to contract with Paul Rusinko for some tile and flooring restoration work that is needed in a bathroom at the manse, as a result of residual water damage from a leak that was previously repaired and was more extensive than originally realized.

11. Purchased two computers to replace older, obsolete models in the church office and associate pastor's office.

12. Expressed gratitude that Frank Perkowski has agreed to serve as the church's webmaster.

Would You Like To GO GREEN?

Would you prefer to receive your quarterly giving statement electronically, rather than by picking it up at church, or receiving it in the mail? We'd rather send it to you by email, and save both paper and the cost of a first-class stamp.

If you would like to "go green" and join the growing ranks of church members and friends who are receiving electronic statements, please contact Financial Secretary Donna Ferry, either by email or by phoning (732) 899-0587.

      PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

The women of the Judith Rachel Circle are a diverse group of women of various backgrounds, ages and talents. Our name is derived from Rachel, a strong woman of the bible and in loving memory of Judith, a beloved Circle member.   Our meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 pm, gathering in each others' homes or in the Chittick Lounge.

Our spiritual focus for this year is "Women Like Us...Wisdom for Today's Issues", by Ruth Haley Barton;  part of the "Fisherman" series of studies.  The study is written so that you can join in at any time, no book required.

We have a strong bond of friendship and often pursue outside activities; we like to think of ourselves as a warm fun bunch.  Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 says that
"two are better off than one because they have a good return for their hard work.  If either should fall, one can pick up the other.  But how miserable are those who fall and don't have a companion to help them up! "  (Common English Bible)

If you are considering Circle membership, maybe our Circle is for you; come and visit one of our meetings!  If interested, please contact Nancy Jalowski, njalowski@aol.com.

PW Logo

The members of the Presbyterian Women (PW) of Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church warmly welcome all women to our church family!  We have promised as a congregation to..." love, encourage and support you and to share the good news of the gospels with you."

One of the best ways to begin your journey of inquiry in our church is exploring the five PW circles.  Our circles are symbolic of the intertwining never ending love and faith we have in each other and in our church.  Our circles pursue in Bible studies, support both local and worldwide mission, and work towards peace and justice.

Members are extremely supportive of each other, sharing their joys and concerns, providing a strong network of compassion and building meaningful, lasting friendships.  We are fun loving, versatile and diverse.

Circles have monthly meetings during the church calendar year on weekday afternoons or evenings.  They are held in the Chittick Lounge or member's homes.  If you are considering Circle membership, or would like to attend a meeting please contact one of the membership coordinators, Nancy Cook (732-295-1612) email, nancycook210@gmail.com, or Karen Norby (732-295-8174) email, hueforyou@gmail.com.   If you prefer, write your name, telephone number, and "PW Membership" on a pew card, and place it in the offering plate.   The PW Circle brochure has more information on each of the circles.

Next Sunday the Coffee Hour will be sponsored by the "circles" of the Presbyterian Women.  There you can pick up a PW brochure and find out more information.   Please be sure to join us.
