Palm branch Friends,

Most of us know it as "Palm Sunday," but there's also another name for this Sunday one week before Easter. This other long-standing church tradition calls it "Passion Sunday."

The difference is more than mere words. The Palm Sunday observance focuses on Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Passion Sunday, on the other hand, begins with the triumphal entry but doesn't end there. The morning's scripture readings and music tell a larger story, recalling the momentous events of that last week of our Lord's earthly life.

This year, we're going to be following the Passion Sunday tradition, sharing a series of scripture passages from the Gospel of Matthew: "Triumphal Entry," "Betrayal," "Garden of Gethsemane," "Arrest" and "Trial." In and amongst these readings will be hymns and anthems specially prepared by the Chancel Choir.

There are advantages to sticking with a single Gospel for an experience such as this. The four Gospel-writers - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - have their own distinctive voices. Focusing on the readings from one book alone helps us discern that voice more easily.

We'll still begin the service with the traditional Palm Sunday Processional, with Sunday School kids waving their palm branches and singing "Ho-Ho-Ho-Hosanna." It's great fun to see the kids' high spirits and enthusiasm, but that's only the beginning...

Join us on this last Sunday in Lent, as we remember what that holy season is all about.

See you in church!

Carl

Single Worship and Alternative Worship Survey Has Arrived

When Superstorm Sandy hit in the fall of 2012 it not only devastated much of the shore, but it sidelined goals and ambitions of many people, businesses and churches in our area. One of those goals our church was looking at, was to add an Alternative Worship Service with more contemporary components, to be held on a different day then our current service. This way we would not be taking anything away from those who enjoy our traditional Sunday service, while adding something that has been frequently asked about over recent years.  It is time to reassess and move forward with the interest that was expressed back in 2012.

We are also as promised, asking for some preliminary feedback from the decision last year to have one worship serviceon Sunday instead of two. We are hoping that after trying it for several months you may have some initial views or thoughts and will offer them to session.

Now is your opportunity to comment with a combined survey on both topics. This will help session decide which direction, you the congregants want to see for the future of our church.  Please keep in mind that if we cannot garner enough support and a physical willingness to help make an Alternative Worship Service happen, then we will no longer be able to attempt this service. Now is the time to express your views on both these subjects, so whether you are happy, unhappy, or somewhere in the middle, in regards to either of them, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey so we have current information for future decisions.

      PRESBYTERY WOMEN

The women of the Judith Rachel Circle are a diverse group of women of various backgrounds, ages and talents. Our name is derived from Rachel, a strong woman of the bible and in loving memory of Judith, a beloved Circle member.   Our meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 pm, gathering in each others' homes or in the Chittick Lounge.

Our spiritual focus for this year is "Women Like Us...Wisdom for Today's Issues", by Ruth Haley Barton;  part of the "Fisherman" series of studies.  The study is written so that you can join in at any time, no book required.

We have a strong bond of friendship and often pursue outside activities; we like to think of ourselves as a warm fun bunch.  Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 says that
"two are better off than one, because they can work more effectively.  If one of them falls down, the other can help him up.  But if someone is alone and falls, it's just too bad because there is no one to help him up. "  (Good News Bible)

If you are considering Circle membership, maybe our Circle is for you; come and visit one of our meetings!  If interested, please contact Nancy Jalowski, njalowski@aol.com.
