Dear Friends,

CWS school kit in use

This Sunday we will be dedicating Hygiene and School Kits that members have put together for Church World Service (CWS).

CWS was born in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II. Seventeen denominations came together to form an agency "to do in partnership what none of us could hope to do as well alone." The mission: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.

More than 65 years later the mission remains, though where and how they accomplish it has changed dramatically.

CWS Kits are small packages of supplies assembled by volunteers and shipped to people in need around the world, including the United States.

CWS provides CWS School Kits, Hygiene Kits, Baby Care Kits, and Emergency Cleanup Buckets. The contents of each kit have been selected with care based on years of experience to make them as useful as possible, wherever and whenever they are sent.

Please visit the CWS website for more information.

Peace and Blessings,

Linda

The Lent 2014 daily calendar, from the Environmental Ministries and Enough for Everyone programs of the Presbyterian Hunger Program, is now available online and in the Narthex.

Known in past years as "Tread Lightly for Lent," this daily calendar is a quick and easy way to stay mindful of all God's creation throughout the season of Lent. As we slow down, reflect, take on spiritual disciplines, and give up distractions during the season of Lent, what parts of God's creation call our attention, remind us of God, or invite us to become more deeply the people God has created us to be? In this calendar are reflection questions, readings, facts, stories, and suggested actions to draw you more deeply into relationship with God and all God's creation, as you make your way through Lent.

Look for this in Upcoming Weeks!

When Superstorm Sandy hit in the fall of 2012 it not only devastated much of the shore, but it sidelined goals and ambitions of many people, businesses and churches in our area. One of those goals our church was looking at, was to add an Alternative Worship Service with more contemporary components, to be held on a different day then our current service. This way we would not be taking anything away from those who enjoy our traditional Sunday service, while adding something that has been frequently asked about over recent years.  It is time to reassess and move forward with the interest that was expressed back in 2012.

We are also as promised, asking for some preliminary feedback from the decision last year to have one worship serviceon Sunday instead of two. We are hoping that after trying it for several months you may have some initial views or thoughts and will offer them to session.

In a few weeks you will have the opportunity to comment with a combined survey on both topics. This will help session decide which direction, you the congregants want to see for the future of our church.  Please keep in mind that if we cannot garner enough support and a physical willingness to help make an Alternative Worship Service happen, then we will no longer be able to attempt this service. Now is the time to express your views on both these subjects, so whether you are happy, unhappy, or somewhere in the middle, in regards to either of them, please take a few minutes to fill out the upcoming survey so we have current information for future decisions.

      SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Sunday School

Last week in Sunday School we had a blast tye dying t-shirts for Youth Sunday (March 30th). We also learned Jesus Loves Me in Sign Language.  The kids picked this song up and the motions easily.  We can't wait to show the congregation on Youth Sunday.

This week we will continue to learn about Lent.  I am so proud of the Sunday School children that have been working on the Lent journey contest.  Many of them are at the halfway mark.  Keep up the great work!

Sunday School is from 10:20 to 11:20.  We meet every week in the Christian Education Building after the Time for Children.  Please pick your child up at 11:20.  It is important that the children stay for the whole time, because if they are picked up early they are losing valuable learning time. Thank you so much for your support and understanding.

      POINT BEACH PREP

This Week in Point Beach Prep

This week we conducted a science experiment that replicated a volcanic eruption!  We built a volcano together out of play dough, then added some dish detergent, warm water, food coloring, and baking soda.  When we added the final ingredient of vinegar, the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar caused an eruption like that in a volcano.  Science is fun!

      MISSIONS

Interfaith Hospitality Network Arriving at the End of the Month
IHN Logo with heart
  • A mother loses her job.
  • A father cannot work because of an injury.
  • A family loses its home by fire or natural disaster.
  • A family must choose between medical costs and rent or mortgage payments.
  • Public transportation is unavailable or too expensive.
  • Affordable housing is scarce in Ocean County.
These are a few examples of why families now make up 40 percent of our homeless population, and why one out of every four homeless persons is a child. In response to this crisis, the Interfaith Hospitality Network brings the faith community together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity.

Families in the IHN program will be arriving here on March 30.    We are in need of volunteers to help with setup and take down, provide dinner meals, visit with families in the evening, stay overnight in the Annex with the families, as well as launder bed linen at the end of the week.

Sign up sheets are in the back.  Dorothy Tolley and Terri Williams would appreciate any help you can provide.  Please speak with them if you have any questions.

Our church has been a host church for IHN for many years.  We are reminded in the book of Galatians to "not grow weary of doing good." Thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the years.
