Weekly News for

March 16, 2014

Dear Friends,

There is an expression that says,

"God is in the details." I take that to me, that we experience God not only in the big moments, the big events of life - births, deaths, weddings, etc. We also experience God in the wonders of sunrises and sunsets, majestic mountains - all the beauty of nature.

However, there are all the details most of us don't even think about as well - like breathing and the ability to think and talk. God is in those "details" which are so vital to our lives.

A few Sundays ago I got dressed for church and hurried out the door.  As I recall, services went fine and it was a good morning.  When I got home, I went to change clothes to be more comfy.  Off came my shoes and it was then that I made a discovery...I had put on and worn to church one navy blue shoe and one brown shoe. I had not even noticed this detail.

Then started me thinking about how often in life I get too busy to take note of the details; details like a child's smile or a hand offered in help. It made me be more mindful of all the God infused details that fill my life and I expect fill your life as well. For some the motto may be "Wake up and smell the coffee" but I am holding onto becoming more aware of God being in the details.

Peace and Blessings,

 Linda

Known in past years as "Tread Lightly for Lent," this daily calendar is a quick and easy way to stay mindful of all God's creation throughout the season of Lent. As we slow down, reflect, take on spiritual disciplines, and give up distractions during the season of Lent, what parts of God's creation call our attention, remind us of God, or invite us to become more deeply the people God has created us to be? In this calendar are reflection questions, readings, facts, stories, and suggested actions to draw you more deeply into relationship with God and all God's creation, as you make your way through Lent.

Welcome New Members

Last Sunday we welcomed six new members.  We are blessed to have these families join us.  Please take time to introduce yourself and get to know them.

Kristen and James Hudnut.  James is a Draw Bridge Operator and Kristen is a Stay at Home Mom for their three children, Cailey, Jack and Nicholas.    The Hudnuts love anything outdoors especially the ocean, boating and the beach.  After moving back from Florida the Hudnuts now live in Brick.

Sue and Frank Perkowski live in Toms River and were active in their prior church as both Elders and a Deacon.  They too love fishing, sailing and boating. Frank is a retired Elementary School Principal and Sue works at Westminster Nursery School and Kindergarten as an Office Administrator for the last 30 years.

Jennifer Tarrell and Dale Write live in Point Pleasant.  They are expecting a baby girl any day now. Jen also is a Mom to 3 year old Patricia.  Jen is a Dental Assistant and Dale works Coastal Boat Sales.  Like the others, they also enjoy boating.

Here's a brief update on my medical situation. I'm still out on disability, but feeling better every day. A recent scan indicated that the embolisms in each lung appear to have dissolved, as my doctors predicted. I'm no longer using supplementary oxygen during the day - only at night.

I still find myself short of breath after even moderate exercise, but I'm addressing that with daily trips to LIFE Fitness center, which is a follow-up to my physical therapy.

Next Wednesday I'll undergo some breathing tests at my pulmonologist's office, which should give some indication as to when I'll be able to return to work.

I'm grateful for the many prayers and expressions of support I've received, throughout this long recovery.

Carl Wilton

Well Done Travis has been recognized by the Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education for his leadership in school.  He has been awarded a Leadership Grant from the foundation.

      SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Sunday School

This week, we will be studying one of Jesus' miracles: The feeding of five Thousand or the Loaves and Fishes Story. In this amazing story Jesus feeds five thousand people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. (Luke 9:16). We will have fun discussing the story and doing a simple craft to reinforce the idea of sharing what you have. We will also be learning to sign the song "Jesus Loves Me" for Youth Sunday.

Youth Sunday is March 30th. The youth group will be leading it and we will be assisting also. This Sunday along with next Sunday we will be Tye Dying T-shirts to be worn on Youth Sunday. It will be so much fun to have tye dyed t-shirts for the youth of our church.

Last week, we learned about Zaccheaus and how God loves everyone. We also continued our Lent Journey. I have many kids who are at 30 pts congratulations to all the kids. Remember you only have to earn 100points. Each time the children earn points they move up their ladder. If you do not know about our contest and would like to know more, please contact me Sarah Morrison (smorrison108@yahoo.com). It's not too late to try to complete this challenge.

      POINT BEACH PREP

This Week in Point Beach Prep

This week we had a visit from Miss Tina, the Point Pleasant Beach Children's Librarian.  She came into both classes and read stories, sang songs and played fun games with scarves.  We are very fortunate to have her visit us monthly.  Check out her story hour at the little red library on McLean Avenue!  Thank you, Miss Tina!

      MISSIONS

Interfaith Hospitality Network Arriving at the End of the Month
IHN Logo with heart
  • A mother loses her job.
  • A father cannot work because of an injury.
  • A family loses its home by fire or natural disaster.
  • A family must choose between medical costs and rent or mortgage payments.
  • Public transportation is unavailable or too expensive.
  • Affordable housing is scarce in Ocean County.
These are a few examples of why families now make up 40 percent of our homeless population, and why one out of every four homeless persons is a child. In response to this crisis, the Interfaith Hospitality Network brings the faith community together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity.

Families in the IHN program will be arriving here on March 30.    We are in need of volunteers to help with setup and take down, provide dinner meals, visit with families in the evening, stay overnight in the Annex with the families, as well as launder bed linen at the end of the week.

Sign up sheets are in the back.  Dorothy Tolley and Terri Williams would appreciate any help you can provide.  Please speak with them if you have any questions.

Our church has been a host church for IHN for many years.  We are reminded in the book of Galatians to "not grow weary of doing good." Thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the years.
