Dear Friends,
This Sunday, we will be ordaining 4 new church officers: 3 as Teaching Elders and one as a Deacon. Part of the service includes the laying on of hands as those being ordained kneel in front of the communion table. All current Ruling Elders on Session, as well as any teaching or ruling elders present in the service of worship, are invited to come forward to participate in the laying on of hands of those being ordained. It occurred to me that many in the congregation may not understand what the laying on of hands signifies.
Laying on of hands in our denomination carries on an ancient tradition of setting aside individuals for a specific task. Moses ordained Joshua to be his successor by the laying on of hands. It is written in Numbers, "So the Lord said to Moses, 'Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him; have him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. You shall give him some of your authority, so that all the congregation of the Israelites may obey.'" (Numbers 27:18-20)
In the New Testament we find the account of Barnabas and Saul (also known as Paul) being commissioned for work set forth by the Holy Spirit. In the book of Acts, we read that in the church of Antioch, "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off." (Acts 13:2-3)
We continue this long Biblical history of setting aside individuals for particular tasks as teaching elders, ruling elders and deacons. We ordain them with prayer and the laying on of hands which symbolizes for us the presence of the Holy Spirit. Come join us in worship this Sunday as we celebrate the ordination of Kevin, Doug, Nancy and Terry. They need all our prayers of support and love.
Peace and Blessings,
Linda

What is Per Capita???? What??? What a weird name! What is it anyway??? Here's the short answer to "What is it?" It's an opportunity for all confirmed Presbyterian members (aged 13 and above) to provide financial support on an annual basis for our Presbyterian form of government. Our government consists of the Presbytery of Monmouth that Point Presbyterian belongs to, the Synod of the Northeast that our Presbytery belongs to, and the General Assembly that all 16 Synods around the country belong to. This year the cost to fund those branches of government is $35 per person. The money is broken down as $7.02 for General Assembly, $3.95 for the Synod and $24.23 for Presbytery.
Why??? Why should we pay Per Capita??? Here's the short answer to "Why should we pay?" If we don't, Point Presbyterian has to. This year, Point Presbyterian's obligation to fund the Presbytery, the Synod, and the General Assembly is $17,987.20 or 511 members times $35.20. The reason our Church has to pay whether we pay or not stems from the fact that the Presbytery, the Synod, and the General Assembly have no congregation of their own to collect from.
How??? How can we personally contribute??? Here's the short answer to "How can we personally contribute?" Use the Blue envelope in your box of envelopes marked Per Capita $35 per person. Next, multiple the number of confirmed members in your household (aged 13 and above) by $35, write a check for that amount, place your check in your envelope, and place the envelope in the collection plate, mail it to the Church office, or make your contribution on-line. If you do not have a box of envelopes and would like to contribute anyway, simply use a regular envelope, mark it Per Capita, and place it in the collection plate, mail it to the Church office or make the contribution on-line. Point Presbyterian will be glad for your contribution in full or in part, to help reduce our deficit and offset the $17,987.20 cost!!!

Fall Registration
The Preschool and Nursery classes explored SHAPE, an element of Art, with Mrs. Karen Norby. A review of man made lines (straight), and lines in nature (curved), was an introduction to "LINES MAKE SHAPES."
The children learned that there are two types of shapes. There are straight edged made by man (geometric) and curved edge made by nature (organic). We explored curved shapes in nature, i.e. rocks, vegetables, even our own curved bodies. We found man made shapes in our classroom. The children created curved shapes with string and man made shapes with popsicle sticks. We observed how artist Joan Miro used curved shapes to show nature in his painting "Figures and Dog in Front of the Sun and how Piet Mondrian used man made shapes in his most famous painting "Broadway Boogie Woogie." Thank you Mrs. Norby!

Volunteer Village Work To Date
The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund is collecting data on the impact the Fund has had since the storm through its grantee partnerships. For Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Peter Farwell recently reported that 725 volunteers have been housed and have worked 19,550 hours. The number of homes worked on/families helped since the storm through the Volunteer Village is over 125.
From Peter, "Kudos and thanks to everyone in this past year plus that has made this awesome effort to help in the Jersey Shore recovery possible. Nearly 20,000 hours of work from volunteers housed in our Annex, welcomed by our orientation team, fed by our cooking and shopping teams, doing work coordinated by our construction team, and with efforts by many more behind the scenes. ... See where the Lord has taken us."
