Dear Friends,

Lend A Hand van sign Our friends at Lend A Hand have come through for us again. First, a refresher of who Lend A Hand is and what they are about.

From the Lend A Hand website...

Lend A Hand is a non-profit (501 C 3) organization founded in 1989 as a local disaster response and assistance program. The Mission and Purpose of Lend A Hand is to coordinate a reliable system of transportation, labor, housing and meals, and job assignments for volunteers who wish to help people suffering extraordinary hardship as the result of natural disasters.

We have been responding to natural disasters throughout the country since our inception. Over 3,000 volunteers have stepped forward to assist those in need. We have always worked to help the uninsured and the underinsured to recover their homes from the damage of wind, water and fire.
 In brief, Lend A Hand:
  • Has no paid employees, we are all volunteers
  • Works out of donated offices provided by the Presbytery of Carlisle, and previously, the Pa. Christian Churches United offices.
  • Owns only a passenger van and two cargo vans for supplies. All computers, office equipment, supplies and materials are donated to us
  • All financial donations are used to charter buses, house and feed volunteers, and purchase materials used in the reconstruction process.
  • We do not work on commercial structures, public buildings, or for-profit entities. We concentrate on those who are handicapped, elderly, lower income...all that needs a hand of compassion and caring.

As a disaster assistance program, we do NOT provide rapid response or medical triage activities. These works are the prevue of FEMA, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. We, rather, are the second level of response...

  • We "muck out" or remove debris, damaged furniture, carpeting, sheetrock, insulation, and utilities
  • We move to the curbside all materials not salvageable as keepsakes
  • We reconstruct houses, including all aspects of home construction from sub flooring to roofs
  • We restore dreams, listen, pray, console and encourage

Something else that Lend A Hand has done for the Jersey Shore, which may be a unique to this area, is give several thousand dollars to our board of Deacons. In conjunction with Lend A Hand, a special Hand Up Grant was created. This grant has allowed those with significant Hurricane Sandy damage to purchase one "big ticket" item, such as appliances, flooring, fencing, etc. To date, 27 grants have been awarded.

Just this week the Deacons received another grant from Lend A Hand which will be their last gift to this fund. Here is part of a letter that was written by the office manager that accompanied the check. "We are pleased that we could provide the Hand Up Grant program with this additional money. We, at Lend A Hand, appreciate your being the good stewards of this money. This program has allowed us to find an excellent outlet for funds that we assembled for Sandy relief."

Please help us to spread the word that additional funds have been received. If you or anyone you know needs a helping hand with purchasing items destroyed by the storm, please contact the office to get an application. There are restrictions on what may be purchased and from whom. Call if you have questions.

In addition to giving this area all of this money, $50,000, the volunteers from Lend A Hand themselves continue to come almost every month to work. They were the first volunteer group to come to our volunteer village and I would not be surprised if they are the last to leave. For more information about them, check out their web site.

We are blessed to have such wonderful, caring friends. Please remember them and the organization in your prayers.

Peace and Blessings,

 Linda

Kenya Mission Trip

Are you open to thinking outside the box? Would you be open to a totally new and exciting adventure? Read what follows and before you say, "Oh, I could never do that" ask yourself, what if you did?  Jesus invited his first disciples to "Follow me..." Are you willing to follow him.....all the way to Kenya?

MBF (Medical Benevolence Foundation) invites YOU to participate in a Medical Mission trip to Tumutumu, Kenya in June.  June 6 - 21, 2014

Sign up for this opportunity to meet and serve beside fellow brothers and sisters in Kenya. This is a great opportunity to help make an impact!

Tumutumu Hospital, started in 1909, is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya, 80 miles north of Nairobi. It is a 203-bed hospital, owned and governed by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. Tumutumu provides general health care, surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN and outpatient services. The hospital also has a Nursing School for training Registered Community Health Nurses. MBF is currently managing a project to upgrade the facilities and capacity of the nursing school.

There is a great need for surgeons on this trip - however, there is a need for all medical personnel including, but not limited to: physicians, surgeons, nurses, family practitioners, OB/GYN, internists, pediatricians, dentists, dental hygienists, physical therapists, lab techs, IT and communications, pastors and lay people. You do not need to be in the medical profession to go on this trip - there will always be a job to be done.

Medical volunteers will serve under the direction and supervision of Tumutumu Hospital staff, participating as appropriate in hospital rounds, outpatient clinics, rural health clinics and public health education forums. Non-medical volunteers will assist in the support departments and are invited to serve as "prayer warriors" and spiritual support to hospital staff, students and patients as requested.

Volunteers and hosting staff will have opportunities to exchange knowledge and participate in discussion forums, learning from one another and building relationships.

For more information email or call Sue Haas at [email protected] or 800-547-7627, ext. 109. More information is also availabe on our website.

Blessings,
Andy

Sunday School Update
Sunday School Difference

Last week we had fun learning about Mary, Jesus' mother. We discussed how God speaks to us and how he spoke to Mary. Some of the kids responded that God speaks to them through their heart and soul.

This week we will be exploring 1 Corinthians 13 and discussing what love means. We will also be making presents for our families and celebrating Valentine's Day.
Be sure to look for information on our Lent Attendance contest. All children who complete this contest will receive a prize and special recognition.

All children 3 to 12 years old are invited to come to Sunday School after the Time for Children part of the service. We meet in the Christian Education Building.
