Can Do

Friends,

This Sunday is Stewardship Commitment Sunday.  Our campaign this year has been "Can? Do!"

We have been enjoying different videos exploring what it means to be Can-Do Christians here at PPPC.  The focus has been based upon James 1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers..."

The Rev. David Cotton, Parish Associate Pastor of Education at the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan, will be our guest preacher this Sunday. Reverend Cotton will be speaking on the passage found in Matthew 7 regarding the wise builder who built his house on the rock while the foolish builder built his house on sand.

This Sunday you will be given the opportunity to both listen and respond.  Pledge commitment cards will be received, along with the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, that will be dedicated.  The filling of a small shoe box for a child in need some where in the world, is just one more example of how you can be a doer of the word.

Road to recovery
A Message From Dr. Wilton

Dear Friends,

I'm so very grateful for the many cards, good wishes and prayer notifications I've received from you, while I've been a patient at Ocean Medical Center and, for now, in the Shore Rehabilitation Institute.

I know Linda and Claire have been keeping you updated through announcements in the worship service, but I understand there are still many questions about my state of health, particularly for those who haven't been able to be at worship on Sundays or who haven't seen my Facebook posts.

My journey through the healthcare system has been complicated and filled with unexpected obstacles, so it's impossible to tell the story briefly - but I'll do my best.

I'd been experiencing shortness of breath for some time, after even light exercise. Early on the morning of Saturday, October 26, I asked Claire to drive me to the Emergency Room at Ocean Medical Center. I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) in each lung, as well as a deep vein thrombosis (embolism in the process of formation) in the calf of my right leg. I was admitted as an inpatient.

An embolism physically blocks a portion of the lung's airways, which means that only a portion of the lung can inflate. The fact that I have one in each lung doubles the restriction on my breathing. I've learned that the body naturally dissolves such clots, but this takes time.

I received the standard treatment - "blood-thinner" medications that reduce the number of platelets (clotting factor) in the blood - along with supplementary oxygen to ease my breathing.

After nearly a week in the hospital, I had received my discharge and was preparing to go home when a complication suddenly developed. The blood-thinners caused internal bleeding in my abdomen, my blood pressure dropped to a dangerously low level and I ended up in the Critical Care Unit (CCU).

The doctors immediately took me off the blood thinners and sent me down for an operation in which a "filter" (like a tiny window screen) was placed in the large vein that carries blood up from my legs. It's a protective measure, intended to shred any further clots that may break off and travel upwards towards the heart, lungs or brain.

Then my kidneys abruptly shut down (probably a side effect of the contrast dye associated with all the CT scans I'd had in such a short period of time). A catheter was surgically placed in my neck so dialysis could begin, but then the kidneys abruptly started working again - so, thankfully, dialysis wasn't necessary.

I was in the CCU for a week before "stepping down" to a regular room. A few days later, I was discharged from the hospital and into the adjacent Shore Rehabilitation Institute (SRI). I've been here for several days now, receiving physical therapy focused on building up my lung capacity. I'm pleased to report that I'm now off supplementary oxygen during the day, and am hoping I'll soon be able to do the same at night. The tentative plan is for me to be discharged from SRI on Monday, after which I'll return home and continue with outpatient physical therapy.

I'll have to ease back slowly into my pastoral duties, as I continue to grow in strength.

After that period of further transition, I do expect to be back to my full schedule. I have no idea how long it will take after that for the pulmonary emboli to dissolve, and to be free of this problem for good, but my doctors do assure me this will happen eventually.

For now, I feel deep gratitude to our Lord for accompanying me through this journey, to the wonderful folks at OMC and SRI who have saved my life and are now walking beside me through my recovery - and to all of you for being so understanding of the needs of my family and myself.

Life is good. May the Lord be praised!

Pastor Carl

At the Mission Fair this Year

Rahab's Rope exists to give hope and opportunity to women and girls who are at risk or have been forced into the commercial human trafficking trade of India. By creating a safe and loving environment, we enable the women and girls to grow and develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Our work provides basic education and vocational training for each girl and woman who come through our centers; ultimately, allowing them to integrate into their communities in a positive and constructive manner. We are a faith based non-profit organization that desires to follow Jesus' teaching and direction on every step of the journey. Our vision is to see lives transformed by God's love in action.

There are many unique items we will be showcasing, including two of the items below.

This necklace brings Hope to thousands of women in India. Through the ministry of Rahab's Rope, a woman hears for the first time there is a God who loves her and has a plan for her life. For the first time she prays to a God who hears and answers. She learns she is beautiful in God's sight, no matter what her past.

Oftentimes in scripture, God uses physical examples to represent spiritual realities.  As a ministry, we believe this unique bracelet is also a great example of the work God is doing through the vessel of Rahab's Rope in India.  Just like these broken fragments of glass, women who have been shattered by the tragedy of sex slavery walk into our facilities broken. But as the Lord begins to reveal love, forgiveness, and affection for them, God begins to use each broken piece of their heart to create a radiant and joy-filled child of God.  Wear this bracelet to remind yourself and others  of God's glorious redemption.

Come early for best selection! Saturday December 7, 10 am - 4 pm                  Sunday, December 8, 10 am - 12 pm
CHURCH SCHOOL

Sunday School News

Last week, we introduced Jeremiah, the boy prophet, a preacher's kid, who understood early on that God called him to a special ministry (Jeremiah 1:4-10).  God calls each one of us.  From the moment of our baptism and throughout our lives, we, like Jeremiah, are led by God to go where we are sent and speak what we are commanded. We fun playing the game "Word of God Toss" and making a mural on Jeremiah.

This week, we will be learning about Josiah, the boy King of Judah (2 Kings 22:1-2; 23:1-3).  Josiah became King of Judah at 8 years old.  Josiah loved and followed God.  We are going to have a fun scavenger hunt on this story.  Be sure to come and bring a friend!

POINT BEACH PREP NURSERY SCHOOL

This Week

This week we met Mr. H and our Hippo puppet.  At our project table we made houses, horses, hamburgers, helicopters, hearts, and a hippopotamus. We did Letter H aerobics, which was a big hit.  Some of the movements the children made were to clap their hands, hop around, put their head up high, hold their hat, ride a horse, hike a hill, stomp their heels, feel their heart, and put their hands on hips.

Our sign language words were heart and happy.  For snack we enjoyed honeydew melon and honey graham crackers.

On Veteran's Day we wrote a letter to a Veteran which we addressed, "Dear Hero".  On World Kindness Day, we talked about how we can have helping hands every day.  We gave lots of high fives and shouted hip hip hooray for H!

Some of our families participated in Operation Shoebox and are excited to track where and when their boxes of toys will arrive for the children in need.

We have been practicing for our Thanksgiving Show.  Our boys and girls will be wearing adorable Pilgrim Hats made by Busy Hand members Heidi Steinert and Tisha Cox.  We were also able to recreate The Very Hungry Caterpillar on our felt board due to their beautiful creations. Thank you for all the hard work!

         HURRICANE SANDY RECOVERY NEWS

Sandy Recovery Volunteer Hosting in the CE Annex

Lend a Hand coolerOur last group for 2013 has left and we will not be hosting volunteers again until January 19, 2014.  For 2013 we hosted numerous groups of volunteers for approximately 33 weeks out of the year.  In addition, our church also maintained hosting IHN several times this past year.

Thank you to everyone on the Sandy Hosting Team, On-Site Volunteers, as well as Cooking Teams, who so freely gave of themselves.  As a body, the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church has used their gift of hospitality for the glory of God!

Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:9-11
