Weekly News for
Sunday,
Nov.10, 2013
| |
Friends, This Sunday, we are will be celebrating both a baptism and a wedding which will follow the worship service. After a very wearisome week, the Rev. Claire Pula will be officiating both of these celebrations of new life. It is good to start the week off with such joyful life events. In his letter to the Church of Philippi, Paul encourages the Church to... Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Join us this Sunday as we come near to God in worship and celebrate His true peace. We are promised a peace that is free of worry, a peace that is attained through prayer, and a peace that is to be meditated upon. Let us think about these things together.

Did you enjoy the video short last Sunday, a quick look at many of our church's ministries and people?
We'll be viewing a different one this Sunday, produced by Greg and Sherri Hall for the Stewardship Team. We'll enjoy a different one each Sunday, leading up to Stewardship Commitment Sunday, which is November 17. Afterwards, the videos will be available for viewing on the church website.
The 2014 Stewardship theme is: "Can? Do!" When comes to responding to a stewardship appeal with generosity, the first - and very natural - question is: "Can I?" Well, it's only human for us to ask the question. What God's most interested in is the other half of the theme: "Do!"
This fall, we'll be exploring what it means to be Can-Do Christians, focusing on James 1:22: "But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers..." Join us! |
Busy Hands For Mission

We are always looking for new members. Sewing skills are not required. Come join us as we create mission items for those in need.

At the Mission Fair this Year
Rahab's Rope exists to give hope and opportunity to women and girls who are at risk or have been forced into the commercial human trafficking trade of India. By creating a safe and loving environment, we enable the women and girls to grow and develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Our work provides basic education and vocational training for each girl and woman who come through our centers; ultimately, allowing them to integrate into their communities in a positive and constructive manner. We are a faith based non-profit organization that desires to follow Jesus' teaching and direction on every step of the journey. Our vision is to see lives transformed by God's love in action.
There are many unique items we will be showcasing, including two of the items below.
This necklace brings Hope to thousands of women in India. Through the ministry of Rahab's Rope, a woman hears for the first time there is a God who loves her and has a plan for her life. For the first time she prays to a God who hears and answers. She learns she is beautiful in God's sight, no matter what her past.
Oftentimes in scripture, God uses physical examples to represent spiritual realities. As a ministry, we believe this unique bracelet is also a great example of the work God is doing through the vessel of Rahab's Rope in India. Just like these broken fragments of glass, women who have been shattered by the tragedy of sex slavery walk into our facilities broken. But as the Lord begins to reveal love, forgiveness, and affection for them, God begins to use each broken piece of their heart to create a radiant and joy-filled child of God. Wear this bracelet to remind yourself and others of God's glorious redemption.
Come early for best selection! Saturday December 7, 10 am - 4 pm Sunday, December 8, 10 am - 12 pm

Operation Christmas Child
PLEASE RETURN BY NEXT WEEK

Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Once again the PW will be working with Samaritan's Purse to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.
1. Shoebox
Use an empty shoebox (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Boy or Girl Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.
3. Fill with Gifts Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball or toy truck.
4. Donation $7
Please donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation
5. Drop Off Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop it off in the North Hall before November 17, 2013.

Sunday School News

Our Sunday School Program is learning about the various Children of the Bible. We meet every Sunday at 10:20 following the Time for Children in the Education Building across the street. I believe the kids should have a chance to learn about the stories in different learning styles. Therefore there is a whole group opening and closing and then centers that review the stories: a drama, crafts and a games center. The preschool and Kindergarten follow the same schedule but in their own classroom. I invite all children to join us and learn! See you there!
Last week, we had a great time at Sunday School learning about The Servant Girl of Naaman. This little Israelite girl is a slave girl, taken captive in a raid. She is a person utterly without any power in a story that presents a stark contrast between the powerful and the powerless. This powerless little servant girl speaks to Naaman and offers hope to him. We had a blast playing games and making crafts that reviewed this story. We also added to our wall of murals on Children of the Bible. If you haven't seen it, be sure to come by the education building and check it out. The kids have done an awesome job!
This week, we will be introducing Jeremiah, the boy prophet, a preacher's kid, who understood early on that God called him to a special ministry (Jeremiah 1:4-10). God calls each one of us. From the moment of our baptism and throughout our lives, we, like Jeremiah, are led by God to go where we are sent and speak what we are commanded. I look forward to exploring this story with all of the children! Next week, we will be learning about Josiah, the boy King of Judah. Josiah became King of Judah at 8 years old. Josiah loved and followed God. We are going to have a fun scavenger hunt on this story. Be sure to come out and bring a friend! Last, if you are interested in being in our Christmas Production please sign up on the Sunday School Attendance or email me at smorrison108@yahoo.com (Sarah Morrison).

Sandy Recovery Volunteer Hosting in the CE Annex
The last group for 2013 will be Lend A Hand, who will be arriving Sunday November 10. We will not be hosting volunteers again until January 19, 2014. For 2013 we hosted numerous groups of volunteers for approximately 33 weeks out of the year. In addition, our church also maintained hosting IHN several times this past year. Thank you to everyone on the Sandy Hosting Team, On-Site Volunteers, as well as Cooking Teams, who so freely gave of themselves. As a body, the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church has used their gift of hospitality for the glory of God! Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:9-11
