Dear Friends, Where were you on October 29, 2012? Were you hunkered down at home, in the dark? Were you in a shelter? Had you sought refuge in the home of friends or family, far away? The events of a year ago, as Sandy roared ashore, changed us all, and changed our communities. Some of us experienced the grief of lost possessions and ruined homes. Others of us worried for family, friends or neighbors, their lives in more turmoil than ours, and did what we could to help. In the aftermath, as first weeks then months passed by, we all came to a place where we just wished it would all be over, our communities back to normal.
We're still in that place. As much as we wish we could just close the book on Sandy, we can't. Not yet. Far too many houses that look normal on the outside are empty shells on the inside. Far too many of our neighbors are waiting and wondering when the paperwork will finally be processed and the work of rebuilding can begin. Far too many businesses are barely holding on. Far too many jobs have not yet come back.
Yet, there have been blessings in the midst of it all: communities coming together, volunteers coming from far and wide, new reservoirs of faith, hope and love.
A year later, it is good to stop, to reflect, to reassess, to remember. And to commit ourselves anew to the slow, ongoing work of recovery.
Join us in worship this Sunday, as we draw strength from one another, and from our Lord. Grace and peace,
Pastor Carl

The Prayer family for the week of October 27 is the Hall family. Let us be prayerfully aware of Greg, Sherri, Londyn, and Jovie, as well as all our members and friends.
Other prayer concerns: Bill Shoppell; Rob VanWinkle and family; Lou Couche; Jean DeMartino; Ralph Smith; Steven Budrick; Eric Erlandsen; all those in the military, as well as those struggling with addictions and mental illness.

Did you enjoy the video short last Sunday, a quick look at many of our church's ministries and people?
We'll be viewing a different one this Sunday, produced by Greg and Sherri Hall for the Stewardship Team. We'll enjoy a different one each Sunday, leading up to Stewardship Commitment Sunday, which is November 17. Afterwards, the videos will be available for viewing on the church website.
The 2014 Stewardship theme is: "Can? Do!" When comes to responding to a stewardship appeal with generosity, the first - and very natural - question is: "Can I?" Well, it's only human for us to ask the question. What God's most interested in is the other half of the theme: "Do!"
This fall, we'll be exploring what it means to be Can-Do Christians, focusing on James 1:22: "But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers..." Join us! |

SNOWBIRDS - Please call the office (732-899-0587) and let us know when you will be away and when we can expect you to return. We need to update our records each year. Also, please provide your winter address and phone if it has changed.
HEART OF CHRISTIANITY BIBLE STUDY - "The Heart of Christianity" will be meeting this Sunday. Please have read the Chapter 2.
SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE - NOVEMBER 3
Next Sunday, we will be offering prayers of thanksgiving in loving memory of members and friends of our church who have departed this life in the past year. Please call the church office or send us an email with the names of people to be remembered in the service.
HAVE YOU MISPLACED YOUR GLASSES? A pair of reading glasses as well as bifocal sunglasses have been turned into the office. If you think they may be yours, please call the office.
BAPTISMS - Baptisms will take place on Sunday, November 10 at the 10:00 am worship service. Ordinarily, at least one parent must be a member of PPPC. For more information, please call the Church Office.
LUNCH AT THE RAINBOW DINER - This Monday, October 25, members of our congregation will be meeting for Lunch at the Rainbow Diner in Brick. Lunch begins at 12 noon. Stop in and have lunch with some laughs.
GLORY TO GOD HYMNAL CELEBRATION - Join the Tower Hill Choir, Brass, Bells and Celebration Band in singing familiar and new hymns from the Presbyterian Hymnal under the direction of Adam Peithmann. The celebration will take place next Sunday, November 3 at the First Presbyterian Church, 255 Harding Road, Red Bank at 7:00 p.m. A free will offering will be taken.
ST. GREGORY'S PANTRY NEEDS - The pantry is in need of items for traditional holiday dinners. Boxes of stuffing and potatoes and cans of cranberry sauce, gravy, yams potatoes, and vegetable are especially needed for Thanksgiving distribution. Items can be placed in the baskets in the Narthex. Operation Christmas Child
Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Once again the PW will be working with Samaritan's Purse to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.
1. Shoebox
Use an empty shoebox (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Boy or Girl Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.
3. Fill with Gifts Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball or toy truck.
4. Donation $7
Please donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation
5. Drop Off Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop it off in the North Hall before November 17, 2013.
Gift Ideas

Sunday School News
Sunday School meets every Sunday at 10:20 after the Time for Children in the Education Building. All youth 3-12 are invited to come participate in exciting activities that teach children about the Bible. Last week, we had fun learning about David and Goliath. We explored David's cleverness and bravery.
This week, we are having a Fall Festival. We will be dressing in costume, doing crafts, playing games and trick or treating. Be sure to come and join the fun!
Next week, we will be learning about The Servant Girl of Naaman. This little Israelite girl is a slave girl, taken captive in a raid. She is a person utterly without any power in a story that presents a stark contrast between the powerful and the powerless. This powerless little servant girl speaks to Naaman and offers hope to him. Often kids are like this little Israelite girl. They find it hard to speak up, give a word of hope or to offer their resources. Be sure to come to Sunday School next week to hear more about this story.
Last, I would like to say "believe it or not Christmas is right around the corner" therefore we will begin to practice for the Holiday Pageant. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this service please contact me (Sarah Morrison, smorrison108@yahoo.com).
I hope everyone has a great week and Happy Halloween!
