Take Out is Available

Dear Friends,

Just recently, I finished reading a wonderful book entitled "Ragged Hope: Surviving the Fallout of Other People's Choices." When I first read the title in a catalog that came to the church, I was intrigued.  My life as well as my husband's has radically changed in the past 5 years on account of choices made by others.  I wondered what this book might say to me.

Well, you could have knocked me over with a pin feather, as the saying goes, when the book came and the first chapter was about our situation!

I recommend this easy to read book to anyone who finds themselves in a place not created by your choices but by others, usually bad choices. One of the lines from the book I especially liked was "Watch for the glory moments when life gets ugly." It is too easy to focus on the gory, the bad, the down side of things and thus we can miss the glory, the wonder and the beauty in any given situation.

Ultimately, this is a book about hope. It is a book about a God who lifts us up and redeems us no matter what happens to us in this life. That hope may not be glitzy and upbeat and we may be hanging onto a hope that is frayed and ragged around the edges. Yet, if it is a hope that is rooted and grounded in God, we will not only survive, we will soar.

Blessings,

Linda

Prayerfully Consider

"Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God's people." - Ephesians 6:18 (CEV)

The Prayer person for the week of October 20 is Lois Francello. Let us be prayerfully aware of Lois, as well as all our members and friends.

Other prayer concerns: The family of Bill Geisler (Elaine Conheeney's Father) Rob VanWinkle and family; Lou Couche; Jean DeMartino; Ralph Smith; Steven Budrick; Eric Erlandsen; all those in the military, as well as those struggling with addictions and mental illness.
                                 STEWARDSHIP

Can Do
It's Stewardship time again - a time to reflect with gratitude on the gifts God has given us, and to respond in faithfulness with a commitment to support the work of the church in 2014.

This Sunday in worship, we'll view the first in a series of short videos that depict our church community and mission. We'll view one of these each Sunday, leading up to Stewardship Commitment Sunday, which is November 24. Afterwards, they will be available for viewing on the church website.

Special thanks to church members and video producers Greg and Sherri Hall, who have donated their professional services to this project!

The 2014 Stewardship theme is: "Can? Do!" When comes to responding to a stewardship appeal with generosity, the first - and very natural - question is: "Can I?" Well, it's only human for us to ask the question. What God's most interested in is the other half of the theme: "Do!"

This fall, we'll be exploring what it means to be Can-Do Christians, focusing on James 1:22: "But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers..."

Operation Christmas Child
operation christmas child

Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Once again the PW will be working with Samaritan's Purse to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.

1.  Shoebox

Use an empty shoebox (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.

2. Boy or Girl
Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.

3.  Fill with Gifts
Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page. Please include at least one item a child can immediately embrace such as a stuffed toy, doll, ball or toy truck.

4. Donation $7

Please donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation

5. Drop Off
Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop it off in the North Hall before November 17, 2013

         POINT BEACH PREP

This Week at Point Beach Prep

Field trip This week we took a field trip to St. Gregory's Pantry.  Each of the families, along with Point Beach Prep, donated non perishable food items.

All the students in both classes were able to tour the pantry to see where the food is stored.  We talked about giving back to the community and how wonderful it is to help others! We also enjoyed meeting a Point Pleasant Beach Police Officer, who helped us cross the street.

What a terrific experience!

CROP Hunger Walk: October 20, 2013

CROP Sign

BROTHERS AND SISTERS ALL

"And the greatest of these is love", true when St. Paul said it and true now. Love spent freely always returns more fully. When CROP walkers and Interfaith volunteers come together they spend their love freely. When they walk for our hungry brothers and sisters around the world they do not forget our homeless brothers and sisters here at home.

The two dozen congregations that host and support our homeless brothers and sisters in Interfaith form the core of the CROP Walk. The loyal Interfaith volunteers are often the faithful CROP walkers. That's just the kind of people they are and that's why The Interfaith Hospitality Network receives 25% of the contributions from the walk.

When you walk with the hungry brothers and sisters whom you cannot see please look into the faces of the hundreds of walkers gathered around you. Sprinkled among them are the faces of people who have experienced homelessness and who appreciate the assistance they received from Interfaith and its faithful volunteers.

Please join us on Sunday, October 20th at the Presbyterian Church on Hooper just north of route 37. Registration is at 1:30 PM, walk begins at 2:00 PM.. The 5 K route crosses no busy streets with shorter options for those who cannot walk that distance.  A registration form is attached.

Come join the celebration, especially you Shore area folks who have no walk in Pt. Pleasant this year because helping the hungry and the homeless is worth celebrating.

For more information or to help in any way please email Alan at  areifenheiser@comcast.net . Thank you.
