 Friends,
In reading the bible passages for this week, two phrases kept running through my mind: "strangers in a strange land" and "strangers in our midst." In Jeremiah, the Jews are exiled in Babylon, and have to learn how to be Jews outside of Israel. They are "strangers in a strange land." As a student at New Brunswick Seminary, I often think of the mainline denominations, in which I grew up, as "strangers in a strange land." The social landscape is so different from what it was when I was growing up, and church is not held with the same respect. What does this mean for seminarians and for the church itself?
In the parable of the 10 lepers, it is the Samaritan leper, the foreigner, who sees Jesus differently. The Samaritan leper is the "stranger in the midst." Interning at PPPC's Volunteer Village, it has been rewarding to work with the "strangers in our midst" - the people coming here to help us who live at the Jersey shore and who have been so affected by Sandy. These volunteers are seeing our communities with fresh eyes, and sometimes offer powerful insights into what is happening. They are also teaching me about God's time, the movement of the Holy Spirit, and the meaning of Christian community.
Come join us this Sunday as we explore how it feels to be a "stranger in a strange land" and how having "strangers in our midst" gives us fresh eyes to see.
The Choral Bells will be providing special music, and we will be welcoming new members.
Peace,
Sue Smith

PRAYER CHAIN - Prayer is a way to reach out of ourselves, to put aside our loneliness or pain for the sake of another. A Prayer Chain is a way for people to gain assistance in prayer for any serious and pressing problem. It is also a way for any person to act on God's command to love one another. Time of Prayer
"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." - Matthew 18:20
On the first Monday of each month, Pastor Linda and whoever wishes to join her will meet in the sanctuary to pray for our Church.
We start by focusing on an attribute of God's character. This month it was God as our guide. All this month, we are praying for members of our congregation by name. So please know all of you who come to church, or don't, who slip in and out, who talk to fellow members or don't, are being though of and prayed for personally.
We pray that your burdens will be lightened, your joys doubled and your spirit within, comforted.
So, if you find yourself out and about on the first Monday of each month between 9:00 and 9:30 sharp. Come sit with us. You'll feel better if you do. Join us in the Sanctuary on November 4.

Sunday School News
Last week it was a great experience to be in the Sanctuary with the congregation for World Communion. It was also very nice to commission our Sunday School teachers and let them know that they are appreciated.
This week in Sunday School we will be learning about David and his life before he met Goliath. The people of Israel wanted a king to govern them. So Samuel went to Bethlehem to meet Jesse and his eight sons. As he meets the sons he listens for God to tell him which one would be king. He thought for sure it would be the oldest, but God says "no". Instead, God chooses David, the youngest of the sons. After David is anointed he goes back to his sheep and continues to devote his life to God and await the time when he would be king. God chose him, knowing his heart, knowing that as a young boy David would grow into a man who would lead God's people, sin and yet repent, seek God's protection, give thanks and honor and worship God. Be sure to come to Sunday School after the Time for Children to hear more about this story and to try some fun activities.
Things to know ...
- Sunday School is from 10:20-11:20

CROP Hunger Walk: October 20, 2013 BROTHERS AND SISTERS ALL "And the greatest of these is love", true when St. Paul said it and true now. Love spent freely always returns more fully. When CROP walkers and Interfaith volunteers come together they spend their love freely. When they walk for our hungry brothers and sisters around the world they do not forget our homeless brothers and sisters here at home. The two dozen congregations that host and support our homeless brothers and sisters in Interfaith form the core of the CROP Walk. The loyal Interfaith volunteers are often the faithful CROP walkers. That's just the kind of people they are and that's why The Interfaith Hospitality Network receives 25% of the contributions from the walk. When you walk with the hungry brothers and sisters whom you cannot see please look into the faces of the hundreds of walkers gathered around you. Sprinkled among them are the faces of people who have experienced homelessness and who appreciate the assistance they received from Interfaith and its faithful volunteers. Please join us on Sunday, October 20th at the Presbyterian Church on Hooper just north of route 37. Registration is at 1:30 PM, walk begins at 2:00 PM.. The 5 K route crosses no busy streets with shorter options for those who cannot walk that distance. A registration form is attached.
Come join the celebration, especially you Shore area folks who have no walk in Pt. Pleasant this year because helping the hungry and the homeless is worth celebrating.
