 Friends,
We've all seen the enticing sign on the highway: "Scenic Overlook." Drivers who can spare a few moments hope to be rewarded with a vista like the one pictured to the left.
The word "overlook" has another meaning. To overlook something can also mean to neglect it, to pay it no mind.
Jesus tells a parable about a man who's frequently overlooked. Curiously, Lazarus is the only person in any of our Lord's parables who's identified by name.
Lazarus is a poor street beggar, a miserable sight to behold. Most people pass him by with scarcely a thought. Yet, Jesus teaches that there's a spiritual cost to going through life belittling and ignoring others: failing to treat them as people of value, created in the image of God.
"The overlook," in that sense, is a spiritual snare to be avoided.
In the sermon this Sunday, we'll examine this beloved - and challenging - Bible story.
We'll enjoy special music by BOTH the Chancel and Dove choirs.
Join us! Pastor Carl

INQUIRERS GROUP TO MEET - An Inquirers Group, for those exploring membership in the church, will take place next Sunday, October 6, 2013. We will start with Communion Brunch in the Annex around 11:15 a.m. and will continue in the Chittick Lounge until 2:00 p.m. Child care will be available (please notify the Church Office in advance). PRAYER CHAIN - Prayer is a way to reach out of ourselves, to put aside our loneliness or pain for the sake of another. A Prayer Chain is a way for people to gain assistance in prayer for any serious and pressing problem. It is also a way for any person to act on God's command to love one another. For many years our church has had a Prayer Chain by Telephone. Last year we added a Prayer Chain by e-mail. We invite you to become a pray-er on our Prayer Chain. To volunteer, you may call the church office at 732-899-0587, Marjorie Watson at 732-899-9723 or Frankie Kunz at 732-892-4223. If you are able, you could also come to our meeting October 2 at 10 o'clock in the Chittick Lounge.

Prayers for our Church
If you are interested in praying each month for Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, please join Linda Chase in the sanctuary the first Monday of each month at 9:00 a.m. (please note the time change). Our first gathering will be October 7th.
The purpose of this gathering is to offer prayers for our church; prayers of thanksgiving as well as prayers for guidance, intercession and direction. Mainline denominational churches such as ours are experiencing difficult times in an increasingly secular society. More than ever, we need to be guided and undergirded by prayer.
This prayer time for our church is open to anyone who has an interest. We will meet from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Should you have questions or should you like to express an interest in this new endeavor, please speak to Linda Chase.

Come Join Us For a Sunday Morning Bible Study
We will be studying an excellent book by Marcus Borg called The Heart of Christianity." Borg is a top notch Biblical scholar who writes in a manner which everyone can understand.
An new excerpt from the book:
"We live in an exciting time in the life of the church. In the past few decades, an emerging vision of Christianity has begun to take root among both clergy and laity in mainline denominations in North America. It is a vision of Christianity that takes the Bible, God, and Jesus just as seriously as did the earlier vision of Christianity.Christianity is centered in the Bible. Of course, it is ultimately centered in God, but it is the God of whom the Bible speaks and to whom it points. God is also known in other ways and other religions, I am convinced, but to be Christian is to be centered in the God of the Bible. This is a mark not of Christian exclusion, but of Christian identity. The Bible is for us a Christians our sacred scripture, our sacred story.
Yet the Bible has become a stumbling block for many. In the last half century, probably more Christians have left the church because of the Bible than for any other single reason. More precisely, they left because the earlier paradigm's way of seeing the Bible cease to make sense to them. Contemporary biblical literalism-with its emphasis on biblical infallibility, historical factuality, and moral and doctrinal absolutes -is an obstacle for millions of people.
The emerging paradigm provides an alternative to biblical literalism. To use the three adjectives with which I describe it: a historical, metaphorical and sacramental understanding of the Bible. With these words, I attempt to describe a view that is broadly shared by mainline biblical scholars who are involved in the life of the churah and by laity and clergy shaped by modern study of the Bible. And though I here emphasize and illustrate its approach to the Bible, I think it applies to the creeds and other normative Christian teachings as well.
If you want to tackle the thought-provoking insights written in this book, come join me (and hopefully others) on the following Sundays: October 13, 20, 27, November 3 and 17. (I will be away on the 10th). The class will be from 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. We will meet in the CE Annex and on the Sundays when we have food, we will get our food and eat together.
Each participant will need a book and the cost is $15. Monies are available to help with the cost if needed.
Let me know if you want a book ordered for you, or sign up in the narthex.

Sunday School News
Sunday school is off to a great start! We have had over 25 children the past two weeks and look forward to enrolling even more. I am always looking for extra volunteers to help with the Sunday School.
Last week, we learned about Miriam and how she watched over her baby brother (Moses) as he floated down the Nile River. Miriam was very brave. When she saw the Pharaoh's daughter had found her brother, she decided to speak to her and propose a plan for her mother to be his nurse. This would keep her family together and safe. We had fun acting this story out, doing crafts on it and completing puzzling puzzles.
This week we will be learning about the storyof Samuel, a boy called by God to be a prophet, a person who speaks for God. We will explore this story through acting it out, crafts and listening games. The story of Samuel can be compared to the Dr. Seuss book, Horton Hears a Who! In this story Horton is the only one who hears the voice of the Whos. He stays faithful to them and looks out for them just as Samuel listened to God and followed faithfully.
Things to know ...
- Sunday School is from 10:20-11:20
- Ages 3 - 12
- Pick up your child in the Education Building at 11:20
- Offering will be taken during the Time for Children; feel free to use the new "ABC" children's envelopes found in the pews for your child's donation.
- On October 6, World Communion Service, Sunday School kids older than pre-school will stay in the Sanctuary for the entire worship service. All children will be invited to sit in our reserved seats marked Sunday School. This will be a great way for our children to learn about Communion.
- On October 27, all Children and Youth Volunteers are invited to celebrate and wear their Halloween Costumes to church for a Fall Sunday School Party!

Sign up sheets are located in the Narthex. Dorothy Tolley, (732) 892-9306, would be glad to answer any questions you may have.
Find out how rewarding it is to volunteer with IHN. This short video will tell you more:

The letter "B" was the focus for both Point Beach Prep classes this week. Our projects included bubble painting, making a bracelet, a bumble bee, butterfly magnet, balloon painting, and a bear.
For snack time, both classes made butter, using heavy cream. Each student got to shake the container and it was ready to eat with our bread just in time! The nursery class learned the word "boy" in American Sign Language, while the Pre-K class walked a balance beam, buzzed like bees, floated like butterflies, crawled like bugs, and walked backwards. We were BUSY!
We have a lot of exciting things planned for Letter C next week!

Follow the Genesee Valley Presbytery Mission Blog
One of the two groups staying at our Volunteer Village this week - from the Genesee Valley Presbytery (Rochester, New York area) is maintaining a blog to record their experiences doing Sandy recovery work in and around Point Pleasant. In case you're wondering what life is like from the standpoint of our guests, check out their blog each day!
Gerry Carmichael's first blog entry includes this reflection:
"I grew up on a farm in Alexander, NY and our parents instilled in my five brothers and me the value of hard work, responsibility, and giving back. And 'Do unto others' was a big part of that education!
I am hoping that the folks in Pt. Pleasant Beach will give us some real challenges and that our little band of Presbyterians from WNY will really do some good. I am hoping that we are not going to pick up trash on the beach (although there is not any location that I love any more than the beach except maybe the mountains of Colorado) and if that is part of our mission, I'm sure it would be interesting finding all sorts of 'treasures'...."
(Believe us, Gerry, we've got plenty for your group to do, working on people's homes - so there's not much chance of your being put on beachcombing duty!) You can read the rest of Gerry's entry on the Presbytery's web site. |
Thanks from First Presbyterian, Belmar The only Monmouth Presbytery congregation to sustain significant damage from Sandy was First Presbyterian, Belmar. The entire area around the church flooded, and the church's basement Fellowship Hall and kitchen was filled completely with water - a total loss of everything that was in it. Also damaged beyond repair was the church's recently-installed elevator. The damages are in the neighborhood of half a million dollars, only a small portion of it covered by insurance. The church has recently taken out a $350,000 mortgage on their building so they can go ahead with repair and recovery work, while they are conducting a long-term special funds campaign.
Over the summer, our Session voted to make a gift of $5,000 to First Presbyterian, Belmar to help with their rebuilding. We received this note from the Rev. Bill Morris in response:
"It is with grateful appreciation that we thank you for your generous gift to First Presbyterian Church of Belmar. Your donation of $5,000 has been placed in a special fund which will be used for restoring our church following the destruction left by Superstorm Sandy.
We are blessed that you have given to us in our time of need and pray that you, in turn, will receive the Lord's blessing.
Yours in Christian Love and Friendship,
Rev. William L. Morris
P.S. - Your gift and care lift spirits and people - you lifted us! We are making recovery progress - thank you very much!"

Peacemaking Offering to Be Received October 6th As Presbyterians enter this Season of Peace, the people of Syria are on our hearts and minds. More than two years of conflict have resulted in over 100,000 deaths, 2 million Syrians becoming refugees, and the internal displacement of as many as 5 million Syrians. The use of chemical weapons on August 21, 2013, resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people, including hundreds of children-a move prompting the United States, along with other nations, to contemplate the use of military force.
The Peacemaking Program and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) are working collaboratively in PDA's ongoing humanitarian response to the crisis in Syria.
Please consider your response and give generously towards the work of Christian peacemaking next Sunday, October 6!
