Church School Signups and Organizations Fair this Sunday:
RALLY DAY!
Church School classes and Youth Connection
begin next Sunday, September 15
| | |
Friends, In recent days we've been reminded of a very special anniversary. It's been 50 years since the March on Washington that kindled the modern civil rights movement, and the famous "I Have a Dream" speech of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King was a giant of faith, who knew how to dream big. His positive vision of what our nation and its people could become were a wellspring of hope in a dark time. Although he has fallen, his dream continues to grow and inspire, even to this day.
We need more dreamers. That's what we're about in Church School, and indeed in all the programs of the church: raising up dreamers. This Sunday in worship, we'll recall the story of another dreamer, Joseph - and, we'll hear a portion of Peter's famous sermon in Acts, recalling the words of Joel about the old who dream dreams and the young who see visions.
How about you? Are you able to dream big, for God's sake? Join us for a very special Rally Day! Pastor Carl

Rally Day Downstairs in the Annex
Rally Day provides an opportunity for everyone - of all ages! - to check out the many action teams, programs and service opportunities available here at PPPC. There will be displays downstairs in the CE Annex of the church's various ministries including Fellowship, Church School, Music, Presbyterian Women, Worship, Volunteer Village and more. There are many, many ways you can become more involved in the Church.
Come over to the CE Annex this Sunday to browse the displays and take advantage of the opportunity to volunteer or join an action team (committee). The Kitchen Team promises a "super-duper" coffee hour upstairs. There will be face painting, crafts and stories for the kids. Join us as we mark the end of summer and the beginning of a new program year!

Prayerfully Consider
"Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God's people." - Ephesians 6:18 (CEV)
The Prayer family for the week of September 8 is the Norton family. Let us be prayerfully aware of Bob, Donna, and Kelsey as well as all our members and friends.
Other prayer concerns: The family of Lou Huesmann, Jean DeMartino; Jake Yersin (nephew of Donna Norton); Marion Fittin; Allison Driver and family, Ralph Smith; Steven Budrick; Eric Erlandsen; all those in the military, as well as those struggling with addictions and mental illness.
Please pray for our Volunteer Village work group for this week, Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, Severna Park, MD.

INQUIRERS GROUP TO MEET - An Inquirers Group, for those exploring membership in the church, will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2013. We will start with Communion Brunch in the Annex around 11:15 a.m. and will continue until 2:00 p.m. Child care can be made available upon prior request. New members will be received in worship on October 13. Please call the Church Office to sign up, or to find out more!
AIR CONDITIONERS - Point Beach Prep is looking for two window air conditioners for the fall. If you have some you would like to donate please call the office. Thank you! BOOM MICROPHONE STAND - We could make very good use of a boom microphone stand for the Sanctuary, to allow us to properly position a microphone for someone speaking from a lectern or playing the piano. Do you have one in good shape you'd like to donate? NURSERY PARENTS - A reminder: when you leave your children with Lacey in the church nursery, please don't forget to SIGN IN with your name, your child's name and - most important - your cell phone number, so Lacey can reach you in an emergency (please put your cell phone on "vibrate"). Thanks!
CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING - SEPTEMBER 25Child Protection Training, which is required for all who work with children or youth in our Church, will take place Wednesday September 25 at 7:00 p.m. Elder Jim McGuire will lead a Child Protection Training session. Jim is an experienced trainer with the Boy Scouts of America. At the training, forms will be available to apply for the criminal background check the church is now requiring. Certifications are only valid for two years. All initial certifications will need to be renewed. No one will be able to work with children or youth without participating in this training. To register for this training event please email or call the Church office.
A SERVICE OF WITNESS TO THE RESURRECTION, giving thanks to God for the life of Louis B. Huesmann, III, will take place Monday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home. Lou was the son of Jean Huesmann.

A Good Word from Cassie Childers
We are glad to welcome Cassie Childers back home to our church, as she shares news in worship of the exciting work she is doing in developing the first-ever women's soccer program among Tibetan refugees in India. Cassie, the daughter of Lee and Wendy Childers, grew up attending church school at PPPC.
Cassie has been living in India in recent years, and became acquainted there with the sizeable Tibetan refugee community. During a Tibetan Sports Association photography exhibit she visited, she was surprised that not only were there no women featured in the photographs, but none others present at the exhibit, period. And this wasn't just soccer-but all sports when it came to Tibetan women.
Cassie recruited and started coaching a women's team that enjoyed immediate success. Her players dream of representing their people some day in World Cup events. Far more important than the competition, however, is what the team is doing to improve the lives of these refugee women.
After a brief talk in the worship service, Cassie will be speaking more about her work among the Tibetan people in lower level of the Education Annex, as part of the Rally Day festivities following the service. |
Hospitality Bread Team
Our church is pleased to welcome guests at the Sunday Services. To let them know that they are special to us and that we are interested in them, the Hospitality Bread Team hangs a loaf of bread (either homemade or store bought) and a brochure about our church on the visitor's front door. What a welcome surprise to find a caring gift at one's door. If you would like to become a part of this committee and "spread the word" by delivering bread on a rotating basis, please contact either the church office or Karen Norby at 732-295-8174.

Church School News
 | Jordan with her listening ears |
Well it has been a month as your Sunday School Coordinator and we are off to a great start. Thank you to all of you who have volunteered and showed an interest in the Sunday School. I can't wait to teach with all of you. I will be taking volunteers throughout the year if you are interested or would like to be a substitute, you can contact me (Sarah Morrison).
It has been so fun meeting the youth of our church and getting to know them. Last Sunday I was excited to meet Jordan. She enjoyed trying on my large listening ears I used as a prop for the Time for Children.
Sunday School Registration will take place downstairs during Rally Day. Registration forms will be available or they can be downloaded and returned to the church. For Rally Day we have a photo booth, crafts, games and other activities including face painting planned. Please visit us in Classrooms 3 and 4.
Our first day of Sunday School will be September 15th, all children will start in church with their parents and then after the Time for Children they will leave to go to Sunday School. Sunday School will end at 11:30. All youth are invited! Don't miss out on all the wonderful activities we will be doing.

GET READY FOR YOUTH CONNECTION
The Youth Connection will be shaking things up this year! We had a great year last year, and have learned a few lessons along the way. Youth Connection is open to all youth in grades 6 through 12. The first meeting is planned for
Sunday September 15 in Classroom #2 in the CE Annex.
Youth Connection plans for the year:
● Time changed to the MORNING! We will now be meeting from 9 to 10 a.m.
This change will allow more youth to participate, and allow youth the opportunity to have the rest of their Sundays free.
● Upgraded Youth Room - We now have a large entertainment center and a tv right in our youth room.
● All back together - Many weekly meetings will involve both Jr. and Sr. High school students, but we'll also split into small groups from time to time.
● The Youth Connection is going viral. We have made a website designated for the Youth Connection. There you will find all sorts of things from a calendar of events to a member directory, so you can keep in touch with each other outside of the youth room.
● We will focus on mission, and doing for others! We have various mission events and activities planned throughout the year.
● Special events planned - bowling night, movie night, a cookie baking night, game night, and lock-ins are being planned. Watch for details.
● Return of favorite activities- Oktoberfest, Italian dinner night, and Messy game night. Who knows? We might even make up some new traditions
● Come learn new things and have a say in what goes on!
For more information contact Courtney Norton.

Jr. and Sr. High Team Building Retreat
A Team Building Retreat will take place on October 4-6 at Camp Johnsonburg. With the help of our Johnsonburg facilitators, our group will get to know each other with some team-building exercises, do some group dynamics work on our low ropes course, and return home enthusiastic and excited about the upcoming year. We will leave on Friday night and return Sunday evening. A $25 deposit to hold your spot is due to Courtney Norton by September 29.

Confirmation Classes This Fall
We are making plans for the Confirmation Classes to begin this Fall. Confirmation is for young people in grades 7 and up. Classes will take place on Sundays at various times throughout the year.
There will be an organizational meeting for parents and young people Sunday, September 22 at at 9:00 a.m. in the Chittick Lounge.
We will be using the book Way To Live, Christian Practices for Teens, edited by Dorothy Bass and Don Richter. Books are available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble in Brick. A few are also available for purchase in the Church office for $16. If you are unable to attend the informational meeting and would like to participate in this years class or purchase a book, please call the church office at 732-899-0587

Choral Bells
It's not too late to sign up. The Choral Bells' first rehearsal will be this week Monday, September 9, 2013 at 6:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Room. Rehearsals are every Monday evening, 6:15-7:30. As of now, there are three vacant spots at the bell tables. Unlike a vocal choir, that can keep on singing if one of the four vocal divisions is a little low in numbers, a bell choir CANNOT play if all the positions aren't filled. Potential ringers must have the ability to read music. Beginners are VERY WELCOME, even if you've never picked up a handbell before. There are lots of experienced ringers who can teach you. Both men and women are welcome!
There's great camaraderie among the Choral Bells members. Bell-ringing is FUN! For more information, please contact Bill Shoppell.
