An ordinary-sounding line from the letter to the Hebrews has a big message behind it: "By faith Abraham... set out, not knowing where he was going."
How many times have you been traveling, not knowing where you were going? For most of us, such a thought is troubling, to say the least. It conjures up the pre-GPS image of unfolding a dog-eared road map and turning it every which way, trying to figure out - literally - which end is up.
Abraham's journey couldn't have been easy, not knowing where he was going. But he went anyway. He went because - while he had no map and didn't even know his destination - he had the next best thing. Abraham had a guide.
His story is the story of all of us: the story of faith. I don't think it's too far off the mark to describe faith as setting off on a journey, not knowing 100% where we're going. Sounds foolhardy, doesn't it? Well, Paul described himself as a "fool for Christ." That sort of holy foolishness has a rich pedigree.
There is an alternative. We can stay right where we are. We can wait till somebody shows up with a detailed map, showing every entrance and exit off the highway, every rest stop, every patch of road construction. We can count every cost and plan for every eventuality.
In other words, we can go nowhere. Because that's exactly what's likely to happen.
We've got a guide, in Jesus Christ. Do we trust him?
Let's talk about that on Sunday. See you in church!
Pastor Carl
