Trust the guide

An ordinary-sounding line from the letter to the Hebrews has a big message behind it: "By faith Abraham... set out, not knowing where he was going."

How many times have you been traveling, not knowing where you were going? For most of us, such a thought is troubling, to say the least. It conjures up the pre-GPS image of unfolding a dog-eared road map and turning it every which way, trying to figure out - literally - which end is up.

Abraham's journey couldn't have been easy, not knowing where he was going. But he went anyway. He went because - while he had no map and didn't even know his destination - he had the next best thing. Abraham had a guide.

His story is the story of all of us: the story of faith. I don't think it's too far off the mark to describe faith as setting off on a journey, not knowing 100% where we're going. Sounds foolhardy, doesn't it? Well, Paul described himself as a "fool for Christ." That sort of holy foolishness has a rich pedigree.

There is an alternative. We can stay right where we are. We can wait till somebody shows up with a detailed map, showing every entrance and exit off the highway, every rest stop, every patch of road construction. We can count every cost and plan for every eventuality.

In other words, we can go nowhere. Because that's exactly what's likely to happen.

We've got a guide, in Jesus Christ. Do we trust him?

Let's talk about that on Sunday. See you in church!

Big Band Benefit for Belmar

From the Rev. Bill Morris, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Belmar:

Nocturnes Big Band
I am very happy - the Jersey Shore's own Nocturnes Big Band is holding two Sandy Relief benefit concerts to support the continuing Hurricane Sandy recovery and restoration work at my church, First Presbyterian of, Belmar! The storm caused over $410,000 of damage to the facility, and we are still, and slowly, recovering. The Nocturnes' two concerts will be held on:

Thursday, August 15, at 7:30 pm

Thursday, August 22, at 7:30 pm

in the lovely, air-conditioned sanctuary of the church, on the corner of E Street & Ninth Avenue (600 Ninth Avenue) Belmar, NJ.

Please - if you would kindly share this info with your friends & neighbors, that would be greatly appreciated! The more the merrier! Hope you, and they, can attend - the cause is great, and the music will be beautiful!
