On a fanullll day in 1992, I drove up to the mountains to visit a small liberal arts school - Young Harris College. I spent the majority of my visit trying to impress soccer coaches and veteran players, hoping to gain a spot on the men's soccer team roster. The tryout went well, but more importantly, I fell in love with the College. The leaves were changing and the campus was beautiful. Everyone I met was welcoming. I was overwhelmed with the feeling that the folks I met wanted me there. Thankfully, I was offered a soccer scholarship - but after that visit, I'm certain I would have attended YHC whether they wanted me on the soccer team or not.

In addition to playing soccer, I was also involved in a number of campus organizations during my time at YHC. I was a member of the Phi Chi fraternity and served on the Inter-Greek Council. I was active in the SPAT Club and received the honor of membership in Phi Theta Kappa. My peers also elected me to serve on the Student Government Association. Additionally, I worked as a resident assistant, START Orientation leader and teaching assistant for Dr. David Franklin, who taught history. My friends and I put together a team for every intramural sport - flag football, basketball, softball and ultimate Frisbee - and we were named intramurals champions during my sophomore year. I still have the T-shirt from that victory today.

Alumni Spotlight: Brad Rutherford and Matthew Peeler
null

When Brad Rutherford, '13, of Lavonia, and Matthew Peeler, '13, of Williamson, started attending Young Harris College back in 2009, they had no idea the incredible impact they would have on the campus community. In just four years, they transformed from young men adjusting to life away from home to megastars of the college bass fishing world. The College and its two famous anglers have had a mutually beneficial relationship. YHC provided a supportive and nurturing environment that allowed the friends to grow and thrive. In return, the recent business and public policy graduates brought the College national recognition by finishing second in the the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship held on Lake Chatuge in August. 5 Questions for... Dr. Johnathan Davis
null Since joining the Young Harris College faculty in 2011, Assistant Professor of Biology Johnathan Davis, Ph.D., has made a positive impact on the College and its students. From advising YHC's bass fishing team and the "Underground" Bible study group, to preparing students to present undergraduate research and conducting his own scholarly studies, Dr. Davis embodies what it means to be a member of the YHC family. It's no wonder he was named 2012 Faculty Member of the Year by YHC's Student Government Association and received the prestigious Exemplary Teaching Award in 2013. Find out how Dr. Davis has made the surrounding area his classroom and laboratory, as well as what inspires him to serve YHC students both inside and outside of the classroom. Read more>>

The program is an expansion of the successful adventure trips offered to incoming students during S.T.A.R.T. Orientation this summer. "We took more than 75 YHC students on various trips during the summer, such as a rafting trip down the Nantahala River, a zip-lining excursion and a tubing trip down the Ocoee River," explained Associate Vice President for Student Development Bryan Hayse, Ed.D. "The purpose of these trips is not only to take students, faculty and staff on exhilarating adventures, but also expose them to the beauty of the area surrounding the College." Read more>>
