What Christmas
Means to Me

It was December of 2011, I was working day and night on my final thesis project at Rutgers.  I was busy to the point of ignoring really obvious clues that Jon was going to propose.  He had dropped some hints in a phone conversation like, "Hey, I talked to your Dad yesterday."  and I was like "Yeah, so.  I need to keep working.''  Ignoring blessings can be easy to do with all the responsibilities that bombard during the Christmas season.  Take it from me, I almost didn't notice getting engaged.

The snow was falling from a beautiful cold purple sky,  Jon had taken me to Enger Tower, a tower on the cliffs of Lake Superior, in Duluth Minnesota.  He covered up his plan by claiming he wanted to take some pictures of the view.  He had hidden the ring in his camera bag.

He was clearly nervous, I and didn't know why,  he told me a story about buying a ring with is friend Dan two years prior.  (I was still pretty clueless despite the ring story.  That's how distracted I was at that point in my life)  He finally got down on one knee and pulled out the ring.  I connected all the dots, just in time to say yes.

My Christmas time engagement story has served as a reminder to me to take time to connect the dots in my life.  Notice things this Christmas season, don't let this time slip by with our really experiencing the blessings in your life.   Especially, the gift God has given us through his Son Jesus.

Merry Christmas!

We are a church filled with stories. It's a blessing that we have many cultures and many different backgrounds from different eras, areas and regions.

Christmas time could mean something different to all of us. The coming of Christ could mean so many wonderful things, bring up many different memories about how you celebrate, remember or a tradition that you might have.

Each week in December, Grace Happenings would like to invite you to share what Christmas means to you in the Left Hand Devotional section. Contact Pastor Matt here if you would like to find out how to join in.
