 Thoughts from Pastor Wes

"Good Question for Ending and Beginning a Year"

One of the great joys I have as Christian and Pastor is ministering to and with children.  Sometimes, I sit in on the Sunday evening Children's Bible Quizzing practice sessions--always a great time of learning and fun! We have wonderful kids and thanks so much to Yvonne for her leadership on this!

This past Sunday the kids were studying the Ten Commandments from the Book of Exodus.
Along the way I would ask questions to see if the kids were just memorizing the material or if they were truly understanding it.
We talked about what God meant when He said, "You shall not make for yourself an idol of any form..."

We talked about what idols look like, what they are.  These kids grasp that idols can come in many shapes and sizes--in fact--anything that takes priority in our lives over God and His will for us.

On this last day of 2014, that is a good question for every disciple of Jesus to ask themselves: "Is there anything that is more important to me than God and His will?"

Let's all ponder that question prayerfully and carefully as we come to the final hours of 2014 and ask the Lord if there is anything that should be changed in our lives as we begin 2015.

Lord, may you be center and first in all aspects of my life. May your will be my consistent and overriding desire in all that I am and do.
Amen.
First Sunday, 2015: Covenant Sunday
Did you know that your relationship to God is foundational to all else that transpires in your life?  At Grace Community Church, we begin each year by remembering and contemplating our relationship with God and by intentionally renewing the covenant that we have with Him as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The GCCN Covenant Service is based upon John Wesley's practice during the 18th Century revival in England.  He was among those who stressed that Christian faith is best maintained when we realize that our commitment to God transcends all other commitments of life.   We are helped in that commitment by having ways of remembering our accountibility before God and others.
Farewell to the Morton Family
As Jeremy finishes his career in the United States Air Force, this dear family will be moving to Texas to begin the next phase of their life and calling.  It has indeed been a great joy to have them at GCCN during these recent months-and we will miss them! Following the Sunday Morning Worship Service, there will be a farewell reception for Jeremy, Vanessa, Caleb and Aaron.   Our prayers and love are with them!  Thank you for blessing GCCN!

New Adult Sunday School Class

On Sunday, January 11, we will begin a combined adult Sunday School Class that will run from January until April.  Aron Wall will be teaching a series from the Bible on the life of David-- all are welcome!  Aron did his doctorate in physics and is currently a scholar in residence at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. We are delighted to have Aron and Nicole as part of the worshiping GCCN community. You will benefit greatly from this biblical teaching series-a unique opportunity!

Blankets to Homeless
This past week, Grace Community Church donated over 50 brand-new blankets to Homefront, Inc., a local agency that works with homeless families to break the cycle of poverty.  Some of these blankets were we able to give directly to people in need who were very, very grateful.  Other blankets were passed along later that same day as part of a Christmas present to families in need. Thank you so very much to the Ladies Ministry and those who do what they can to assist with these very practical life needs!  Thank you for the generosity of those who donated so this could happen!
Collecting Items for a Family in Need
We continue to collect items for a family which recently had premature twins girls who are still in the hospital.   Grace Community Church assisting this family in a variety of ways. If you are able to provide clothing or basic needs for young infants, please place them in the bassinet in the foyer.  A baby shower is being planned for January 18th.
Men's Ministry--Winter Series 2015
Rock Solid
Men, the Tuesday night group will begin on January 20 at 7:00 pm, Pastor Wes' home.  We will meet every other week for 10 sessions.  The topic will be "God's Power for Transformation." We will take a look at how God is transforming people and communities around the world in the 21st century.  We will also see from Scripture what His will is for transforming our own lives. This men's ministry exists for growth, support, encouragement and to aid in finding God's plan for life.
