"Scarecrows in the Melon Patch"

Generally, scarecrows are a source of humor for us--or sometimes fear.  As the name implies, they are meant to "scare crows" and ensure that they stay away from the garden. We realize that scarecrows have no power in themselves--they are not mobile, they cannot throw stones, they can do little but just stand there.

But the crows can be fooled into thinking they have more power than they actually have.  So the power of a scarecrow is--like beauty--in the mind of the beholder.

What is it within our lives that has no real power over us,  except the power that we give to it?

Perhaps something causes us to have unreasonable fear, or to needlessly delay, or to have distorted priorities?
A whole host of things can have inordinate power over us:
riches/possession
news headlines,
people's opinions
the future.

Giving power to undeserving things can make idols in our lives.

The Bible says, regarding idols, "Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."
--Jeremiah 10:5

This Sunday at Grace Community

Family and family relationship are central to each of our lives and the quality of life that we live.  The Bible gives us many great insights on building great family relationships and this Sunday Pastor Wes will lead us in studying some of these. Please pray that the truth of God will be shared effectively and with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. God instituted family and His will is for us to grow and rejoice within our families.

At the conclusion of the Sunday Morning Service, there will be a

dedication of trees in memory of Evelyn and Michael Mazur Sr. This dear couple were part of the GCCN congregation for many years and it is indeed a joy to remember and honor them this way.

Women's and Men's Events this Saturday
The next ladies lunch and "Sewing Bee" will be this Saturday, November 15 at 11:30 a.m. No prior sewing knowledge is necessary, but you will want to bring some sewing materials if possible. Please contact Yvonne Hurd for details about the event. Come out for lunch, fellowship, a devotional time a chance to put your talent to work!

On the same day, there will be a wood-cutting day to help supply firewood for some of our seniors who use wood to heat their homes during the winter.  We will start about 9:00 in the morning and you can drop in for a couple hours anytime until the early afternoon.  Great opportunity to make a big difference for others!

Then on December 6th, ladies of GCCN will be taking a trip to the Peddler's Village in Lahaska, PA. Invite your friends, have dinner, enjoy shopping and see Christmas lights! For more information, please contact Sarah Tink or Amy Weyna.

Growing Children's Ministry--Volunteers Needed
Grace Community Church's ministry to children continues to advance--praise God! We are in need of additional volunteers as this time so we can provide the best ministry possible. Can you help?

1.) Children's Sunday School Class teachers.  One of the most important ministries of the church is teaching kids in Sunday School--making life-long impact and memories. We are in great need for teachers--would you consider making this investment?

2.)  Nursery worker.  We are in need of 2 more adults who would help in the nursery on a rotational basis, about once per month.

3.) Children's Church leader: This would be about 2 Sundays every two months.  Using the prepared curriculum, this would be ministering to about 6-9 children during the Main Service.

4.) Children's Ministry Leader: someone with a passion for children who would work with the Pastors in guiding and overseeing the various  children's ministries that are developing.

There is no ministry more important than ministry to children! If the Lord is leading you to participate in one of these roles, please contact Pastor Wes at your earliest opportunity.  Thank you!

Good News From God's Word
Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good." No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power."  ---Jeremiah 10:1-6
